Reactions 1468, p13 - 7 Sep 2013 S Carbamazepine Encephalopathy: case report A 39-year-old woman developed encephalopathy during treatment with carbamazepine. The woman had temporal lobe epilepsy, which was being treated with carbamazepine [dosage and route not stated]. She became pregnant, and her epilepsy continued to be controlled with carbamazepine. She had an uneventful pregnancy. However, she developed higher mental dysfunction immediately after delivery [duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. Diffuse slowing was seen on her EEG with minimal changes on stimulations. The woman started to improve and normalised 5 days after giving birth. Of note, she had experienced a similar presentation after her prior delivery. Author comment: "Carbamazepine was the most likely cause of the transient encephalopathy." Zaidan R.
