Benzodiazepines Dysmorphogenes is: cas e report Eight Infants, born to mothers who had used benzodiazepines corresponding to 75mg oxazepam or 30mg diazepam per day, dUring pregnancy were examined. Four of the mothers were smokers and all denied alcohol abuse dUring pregnancy. Seven of the births were relatively uncomplicated One Infant was born at 28 weeks and had a complicated neonc::tal period At birth 6 Infants had a low Apgar score and 5 reqUired resuscitation. All 8 were hypotoniC and experienced drug withdrawal with eplsthotonlc and convulsive episodes. Lack of rooting reflexes and feeding difficulties were present In 7 of the Infants. All the children had craniofacial abnormalities, the most common being epicanthic folds (n = 8) , slanted eyes (8) , short nose with low nasal bridge (6) , uptilted nose (6) , hypoplastic mandible (5) and flat upper lip (5) . One Infant having severe psychomotor retardation died at age 11 weeks SIX of the survIving children had varying degrees of mental retardation Delayed motor development was common and all had gross motor disturbances Autopsy of the Infant that died showed slight co rt ical dysplasia and an Increased number of single-cell neuronal heterotopias in the white matter. The authors concluded th at " .. the maternal history and the particular clinical manifestations make a teratogenic syndrome caused by BZD [benzodiazepines] most likely'.
