Urodzona w Belleville, Ontario, od 5. roku ży-cia lata dziecięce spędzi-ła w pobliskim Napanee. Została odkryta pod-czas śpiewania coverów country w księgarni Chapters w niedalekim Kingston. Obecnie miesz-ka w Los Angeles. Avril Lavigne w dzieciństwie interesowała się hoke-jem, baseballem i jazdą na deskorolce, a myśla-ła o zostaniu policjant-ką. W wieku dziesięciu lat miała swój pierwszy solowy występ w chórze kościelnym. Niedługo potem zaśpiewała razem z kanadyjskim piosen-karzem Stephenem Med-dem, który wydał płytę zatytułowaną My Win-dow to You, na której

znalazły się trzy pierw-sze piosenki Avril zacho-wane w klimatach muzy-ki folk. W 2002, Avril wy-dała swoją pierwszą pły-tę która nosiła tytuł Let Go. Album promowa-no singlem „Complica-ted”. Na płycie znalazło się trzynaście solowych utworów. Płyta sprzeda-ła się aż w czternastu milionach egzemplarzy. Druga płyta, Under My Skin, ukazała się w 2004 (premiera w Polsce od-była się 24 maja 2004). Pły-ta była jeszcze ostrzejsza niż pierwsza. 13.042007 ukazała się jej trzecia płyta pt. The Best Damn Thing. W 2010 roku na-grała piosenkę do filmu Alicja w Krainie Czarów o tytule ‚Alice’
