Antineoplastics
Adverse effects: clinical studyFatigue syndrome lasting 4-8 weeks, chemical and
ischaemic hepatitis, severe thrombocytopenia and icterusoccurred following whole liver chemoembolisation in 7evaluable patients. The patients had unresectable colorectalcancer, metastatic to the liver, and good performance statusThey received ’Angiostat’, a vaso-occlusive collagen, mitomycin, doxorubicin +/- cisplatin.
The authors suggested limiting the use ofchemoembolisation in metastatic colorectal cancer to patientswhose disease continues to progress after systemic or hepaticarterial antineoplastic therapy. They also suggestedperforming staged unilobar chemoembolisations at 4- to6-week intervals rather than whole liver chemoembolisation inorder to reduce toxicityBorner M, et al.
