Antineoplastics Benign melanocytic naevi: incidence study Th e number of moles present on the skin of 32 children receiving chemotherapy was compared with 32 similar children attending a dermatology clinic . Blind assessment showed that patients receiving 2-3 years of chemotherapy for acute lymphatic leukaemia, lymphoma or rhabdomyosarcoma did not differ in the number of moles (mean 42) to the control group (42). However , patients who had completed chemotherapy (mean 28 months' previously) had significantly more moles (114) than the control group. The moles occurred mostly on the trunk, but also on the arms, legs, palms and soles. There were more moles of both 3mm and < 3mm diameter in the chemotherapy recipients. More patients had acral moles during (16) or after (13) treatment compared with controls, but those patients who had completed treatment had significantly more acral moles than the other 2 groups. Since children with an increased number of moles may have an increased risk of melanoma, the authors concluded that such children should avoid excessive exposure to the sun , and their skin should be examined in long term follow-up.
