DEBATE

• Debate starts when two people have a

different opinion about the same idea.

• There are three types:

1) Value : X is better than Y

2) Policy : X should do Y

3) Fact : X is/was/will be true



Debate Terms

• Opinion is called the Proposition or

Resolution.

• Negative Team.

• Judges.



Reasons

• Everyone has opinions and these opinions

are based on REASONS.

1) Must logically support the opinion

2) Must be specific and state the idea clearly

3) Must be convincing to a majority of

people



• You also need:

- Manner

- Gestures

- Posture

- Voice

- Humor



Supporting your opinion

• EVIDENCE – is the concrete foundation.

• It can be in the form of: -

- an example

- statistics- the opinion of an expert



Debate Application:

• Finding evidence to support your reasons

requires researching a variety of sources

includin :

- magazines

- books

- journals

- Internet, etc.

- Choose one set of opposite opinions

- Look for information in ma azine, news a ers,

books, on the internet or interview experts.

- Find at least 3 different reasons.

- Write Reason – Support sheets

• Remember : Include your sources.



Organizing your opinion

• Our presentation must be organized in asystematic way.

• FIRST AFFIRMATIVE CONSTRUCTIVESPEECH or 1AC.

• It has three parts:

- Introduction.- Affirmative Points.

- Conclusion.



Refuting Explanations

• Here we say why the opposing team’s pointis either not true or not important.

• Then we have in mind HOW to say therefutation.

• There are five steps: - signpost.

- rephrase.- negation & why.

- rationale.

– Teacher gives a resolution to the

Affirmative Team. - ey ave m nutes to:

brainstorm, make reasons and support.

- Write them and pass them to the

Negative Team.-The Negative Team has 3 minutes

to think about possible resolutions.



• Round 2

- similar to round 1 but the Negative Team

without preparation has to answer.

• Round 3

- Both teams work without preparation.

summarize the debate and wh our side

How to Judge a Debate?

• Relax and follow your feelings.

• Compare the two teams in three areas:

- MATTER : refers to team’s lo ic andreasoning.

- MANNER : refers to team’s speaking style.

- METHOD : refers to team’s organization.

• Flow the debate (take notes).

• Fill in a judging form.



• Give points in a scale of 1 to 10.
