lobally, sports tourism is recognised as one of theupcoming tourism marketswith significant economicpotentials. In Malaysia, it is animportant income generator inthe tourism industry, contributing approximatelyRM5 billion annually and issupported by a broad globalaudience as sporting eventsusually attract domestic andinternational participants.Revenue generated rangesfrom accommodations, foodand beverages, ticket/gatesales, sponsorships, mediarights to merchandising andgarment production. Sports tourism can becategorised into ‘hard’ sportsand ‘soft’ sports. Hard sportstourism attracts huge globalparticipants, and people tendto travel together to a hostcountry to attend these events. These are usually competitiveinternational sports eventssuch as Formula 1 Grand Prixand SEA Games. Meanwhile, soft sports tourism refers torecreational sports activities orgetaways such as golfing,water-rafting and scuba-diving.

G This type of sports tourismcombines both sportsactivities and leisure, whichtypically lures tourists toexciting destinations knownfor its physical or naturalattractions. In 1998, the CommonwealthGames, known as the secondlargest sports event in theworld after the OlympicGames, was held in KualaLumpur. This internationalsports event was an excellentexample of hard sportstourism in Malaysia thatcreated multifold values tothe economy. The eventattracted 6,670 athletes andofficials, along with asubstantial number of mediaand visitors locally andabroad. It was reported that asingle international touristwho came for theCommonwealth Games spentan average of RM3,800 for theduration of 12.5 nights stay. Following the successfulinternational event, Malaysiakept up the momentum in1999 by hosting the FormulaOne Championship Car

Racing (F1 Grand Prix) inSepang. The FI Grand Prixstimulated the expansionand recognition of thenation’s sports managementcapabilities. The premierevent contributed more thanRM500 million to the nationaleconomy, and the spill-overscontinued to soar in yearsafter. The F1 Grand Prix wenton for another great 19 years. It attracted global die-hardfans who were fascinatedwith Malaysia, and many keptreturning for their fun-filledvacations. In 2000, the LangkawiIronman Triathlon pulledin sports enthusiasts to testtheir fitness level in physicaland mental strength. Thelong-distance triathlon raceinvolved sports activities such as swimming, cyclingand marathon. About 300athletes from around theworld took part in thistriathlon. every meeting, it became increasingly clear thatwe have made the right call”. “I remember vividly the very first meeting thatwe had with MIDA in Kuala Lumpur in 2014.They instantly understood our concept andvalue propositions,” recalled Mr Jos Muller,Business Development Director, ChemicalDivision, C. Steinweg Group. “We wereimmediately advised on what are the steps tobring the project forward, from feasibility studystage to conceptualisation, execution and so on.We even had the chance to host MIDA ChiefExecutive Officer and other high rankingofficials at our Headquarters in Rotterdambecause they wanted to experience first-handour full suite of service offerings and stronglyencouraged us to roll out in Malaysia.” For C. Steinweg Group, other essential factorsthat helped to push forward the investmentdecision in Malaysia, versus other surroundingASEAN neighbours, were the abundance ofhighly-skilled labour in the country, availabilityof modern infrastructures and the chemicalindustry’s convergence into Malaysia, both as amanufacturing cum distribution hub. “Asia has become the centre of gravity for thechemical industry, especially specialitychemicals”, explained Mr Muller. “According to arecent study by Boston Consulting Group, thebiggest markets as of 2017 were Asia-Pacific(with about €40 billion in specialty distributorsales), North America (€31 billion) and WesternEurope (€13 billion). The remaining markets areall less than €5 billion.”  “To scale up our operations in Malaysia andserve this high-growth region from here, I amhappy to share that we have found many youngtalented Malaysians to join our growingworkforce in both Johor and Port Klang.TheGroup  has put in place a comprehensivetraining programme for these high-potentialindividuals – where they will be trained andcoached by experts from our Centres ofExcellence in Rotterdam, Singapore andShanghai”, added Mr. Boll. “We are keen toattract the very best of local talents, nurtureand enhance their capabilities and give themgood opportunities to advance and compete atthe global level.”
