Subject: Why so few people join the military nowadays

Date: Thursday, July 01, 2010

PURPOSE

The aim of this report is to describe the problem of joining the PAF (Polish Armed Forces) young people and

the attitude towards the army of the current generation. This report is based on press releases, military

reports, soldiers opinions, and researches provide by a specialized agency.

POSSIBLE REASONS

It seems that in the last few months a number of new soldiers drastically decreased. Polish press is alarming

that a significant amount of young people are migrating and looking for a work abroad. High salaries attract

them and they take up a daunting challenge to obtain better social position in the EU society. However the

risky decisions give chances for elusive dreams about richest and glory. Our army can not compete against

with the posts abroad. Moreover soldiers life, means irregular family relationships and social life. Frequent

travels and duties make it impossible to deal with children and home issues.

CURRENT SITUATION

Concerning statistics PAF need a big quantity of new soldiers. Most sought-after are high-quality specialists

with technical expertise for officers, warrant officers and NCOs vacancies. Besides in Polish units above

4000 posts are free for professional privates. Military announcements ensure stabilization and huge

prospects. Another factor which should encourage young people to serve in the army is the chance to check

themselves and test their own physical and mental possibilities. Soldiers opinions are divided. Some claim

that army fulfill their expectations. Others can not go along with them. Some are deterred by the fact that

superiors impose orders on them.

CONCLUSSIONS

Concluding my report, one of the basic findings seem to be that we should enhancing working conditions for

soldiers. Particularly if we increase the salary of our future soldiers they will join the army willingly. Taking

into consideration the opinions of soldiers, agency researches and press reports it is obvious that the better

the PAF conditions are, the better soldiers’ personal situation will be.
