1. This office is conducting an i nvestigat i on of the Deatha of United States Army personnel who were pri soners of war of t he Jepenese and died while on a work detail in Tayahas, LUZon, Philippi ne Islands .
2. Major Paul Ashton, 0397788, Medical COl·pS, former ly a prisoner of war of the Japanese who has been evacuated to the Unit ed Statee, was interroga ted in this office concerning ca sualties in the Philippines. He sta ted that in June 1942, he volunteered t o go 1"rcm Blli bi d to the Japanese Camp in Tayahas to treat American pri soner s there on a work: detail. Many of the men on the detail vere dying because of the working and living conditions in the Jungle , lack: of =dicine or medical treatment, and other circumstances. Between June and ,A ugust 1942 approx1 ma tely eighty Americans died on the detail and were bur1ed "on the hank of a river two hundred fi tty yarde beyond the l Ar gest Japanese built bridge fifteen kilcmeters ea st of Ce l.anog, Tayahas . · Major Ashton further stated that complete recorde of the Tayabes detail were turned over to headquerters at Taclohan, Leyte .
3. Request pranpt 1nformation as to vhether the r ecorda r eferr ed to are available at your headquarters. Request further t hat, if these recorda are evailable, that investigation be made and Reports of Confirmation or Change of status on RPD Form 37 be forwarded to this office in appropriate cases at the earliest practi cable dat e .
