What is WITRICITY?

The transfer of Electricity from one place to another place without wires is known as “WiTricity”.

WiTricity technology is transferring electric energy or power over distance without wires, with the basics of electricity and magnetism.

NEED of WITRICITY

Page 5: Witricity ppt

Trillions of dollars spent on wires and installation of electric poles

Page 6: Witricity ppt

About 40 millions of batteries are added to e-waste in a year

Wires sometimes can cause……

In year 1891,NIKOLA

TESLA proposed method of wireless transmission of electricity.

He used 187 feet tall tower to broadcast energy.

He used to lamp 200 light from 40km distance.

His vision for ‘WORLD WIRELESS SYSTEM’.

HISTORY

Page 9: Witricity ppt

• Rebirth in 2007 In 2007,6 MIT members were

able to successfully transmit power to a bulb with in a distance of 2 meter at a frequency of 9.9MHz.

They used concept of non radiative mid range energy transfer- Resonance

Inductive coupling

They called their experiment as ‘WiTricity’.

Basic Principle of Witricity

Electric energy

Magnetic wave

Electric energy

Oscillating electric field produce oscillating magnetic field AND THEN oscillating magnetic field produce oscillating electric field

Types of Wireless energy transfer

Short range – Inductive coupling

Mid range – Resonant inductive coupling

Long range – Microwave

transnmission

Page 13: Witricity ppt

Inductive coupling Uses electromagnetic induction

concept for interdependence of time-varying electric and magnetic field.

Page 14: Witricity ppt

Resonant Inductive coupling Uses almost same concept as inductive coupling just that the coil operates at the resonant frequency leading to efficient transfer of energy over a large distance.

Page 15: Witricity ppt

Microwave transmission Requires a microwave source, antenna, and receptor.

Operates in a frequency range of 1-40GHz.

Aims at higher power transfer over a long range of some miles.

o Highly efficient at 2.45GHz.

Page 16: Witricity ppt

AdvantagesEfficient ,easy.

Reduce e-waste.

Shock free environment.

Low maintenance cost.

Elimination of high power transmission-lines & cables.

Page 17: Witricity ppt

Disadvantages Microwave interference with

present communication system.

Develop reactive power at small frequency->biologically harmful.

Long range installation costs high.

Future scope

In future RECTENNA is used to produce large scale power for microwaves.

Scientist are working exceeding its range.

Currently researches are going on using this technology for laptops.

WITH IN NEXT 10 YEARS

Page 23: Witricity ppt

Wireless USB.• WUSB will be high speed wireless interconnect

technology to take advantage of USB.• With WUSB,a user can bring a hard disk in

proximity to a P, laptop• & once authentication &authourization are

completed, files can transfer onto the PC.

ConclusionWiTricity , if successful will definitely

change the way we live.

Imagine cell phones , laptops , digital camera’s getting self charged ! Engineering have got job on hand to research & commercialize the technology .Till then.it is a wait in anticipation.
