Witricity is nothing but wireless electricity.
Transmission of electrical energy from oneobject to another without the use of wires iscalled as Witricity.Because of Witricity some of the devices won'trequire batteries to operate.

Theres something new coming upto play with : Wireless Electricity.
In the first successful trial of itskind, the team was able to illuminatea 60-watt light bulb 7ft away .
The team was fromMassachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT) , who called theirinvention WiTricity.

The inspiration came when the leadresearcher, Dr. Marin Soljacic, was standingin his kitchen at night staring at his mobilephone. Scientists have known for nearly twocenturies that it is possible to transfer anelectrical current from one coil of wire toanother without them touching. The phenomenon, called electromagneticinduction, is used in power transformers andelectric motors around the world.

There are 2 major types of wireless energytransfer:
Short range: Inductive Coupling
Medium range: Resonant Induction

Inductive coupling works on theprinciples of electromagnetism:
When a current (electricity) passes through awire, it generates a magnetic field perpendicular tothe wire.
When a wire is in proximity to a magnetic field, itgenerates a current in that wire.Magnetic fields decay quickly , making inductivecoupling effective only at very short ranges.

What Is Resonant Induction?
A group of engineers at MIT came up with the idea touse resonant induction to transmit power wirelessly. They deemed their result WiTricity (like Wi-Fi) .WiTricity can transmit electricity wirelessly at 40%efficiency to about 7 feet.

Resonant induction still uses the same principles as magneticinduction (magnetic fields to transfer current), but it usesresonance to increase the range at which the transfer canefficiently take place.Resonance is a phenomenon which causes an object tovibrate when energy of a certain frequency is applied.

Everything resonates at a certain frequency, based on its shapeand material.Energy transfers easily between resonating objects. An exampleof this is when an opera singer shatters wine glasses by singing atthe frequency at which the glasses resonate. With resonant induction, power is transmitted between tworesonating coils.

1) Power from mains to antenna, which is made of copper.
2) Antenna resonates.
3) Tails' of energy from antenna'tunnel' up to 5m (16.4ft).
4) Electricity is picked up bylaptop's antenna.

o A Tesla Coil produces high voltageelectric arcs. These arcs causepermanent damage to electricaldevices on contact.
o Tesla coils also destroy hearingaids and cardiac pacemakers intheir vicinity.

The transmission of power without wires is not a theory or a merepossibility, it is now a reality. The electrical energy can beeconomically transmitted without wires to any terrestrial distance. MITs WiTricity is only 40% - 45% efficient and they have to betwice as efficient to compete with the traditional chemical batteries. Aim is to get a robotic vacuum or a laptop working, chargingdevices placed anywhere in the room. The researchers have said that in another five years time, they will come up with a WiTricity system for commercial use.
