As students filed into the auditorium on the first day of school, they were given a speech about the all ENTITLED Generation iY.This is our generation; born in the ‘90’s, we were categorized as

self-absorbed, slow to mature, tied to our phones, and lacking thecapacity to care about anything. We couldn’t help but wonder if

this was true. When our school received press, it was for negativebehaviors. We decided we wanted to change this. We wanted touse our energy and technology to make a positive mark on ourcommunity. We were ENTITLED TO CHANGE how we wereperceived. We turned negative press into positive press. The

International A&P received coverage for taking on a global issue.Students worked together to raise money for a secretary battlingcancer. In the halls, you would see high-fives, “hello”’s, and hearcaring conversations between all students. We wanted to shatter

the negativity associated with our ENTITLED generation. Wewanted to be remembered for doing generous things; In reality, it

was OUR TURN to change the way the administration saw ourgeneration. We were OWED an opportunity to not only strive for

excellence, but to let people know that we were QUALIFIED tosucceed in everything we did. We realized that we were the

foundation of this generation, and we weren’t going to allowpeople’s perception to slow us down in achieving the positive

goals we set. This is ENTITLED.

How do you earn yourmoney?

Students share their unique jobs.

Hitting the books Students share how they balance school and work.

Layout by Natalie Hofferber Balancing school and work, can it be done correctly? Finding time to study and do homework can be hard tohandle when a student is involved in clubs, sports, or has a job during the school week. On the other hand, having a job in high school can teach a student many important life skills such as time management, commitment, and responsibility. "Working at Burger King was a good experience. I learned how to balance my time between school and work.Having a little bit of money was important because I had to pay for my own car and insurance," junior RyanNorthup said. It is often said that school comes first above everything else, but for some students maintaining an incomewas equally or more important than school. Some students only worked on the weekends while others workedduring the school week. "I worked before school at 7:00 at Peaceful Beginnings and I worked in the afternoon from 3:45 until 5:30. Idon't really think it was that difficult to get my homework done because I got home around 6:00, but I can seehow it was a problem for some kids," junior Samantha Larsen said. Occupational release was a privilege granted only to seniors which allowed them to have one or more freeperiod during the school day to go to work. It was a way for 26 seniors this year to earn some extra cash whilestill going to school. "I liked having occupational release at the end of the day because it gave me time to get any school workdone before I went into work," senior Makenzie Fosler said. Regardless of how many hours students work per week, they must keep in mind that their grades matter. It isimportant that they stay organized and manage their time in order to be successful students while still earningmoney.

"I write articles onlineabout Mixed Martial Artsfor a sports mediacompany as well as doingvarious freelance work,"senior Casey Hodginsaid.

"I'm a barista at Scooter'sand I enjoy makingcoffee all day, everyday,"junior Elizabeth Hallsaid.

"I work for my brothers, all the while making bigbucks," junior JohnDerun said.

Bitter sweetWorking at Cupcakes & More, senior MorganCardwell shows her skills by frosting a cupcake for acustomer. "Working and managing school can have itstough days, but in the end I wouldn't give it up. It isgreat having a little extra money to spend, but it canalso be very time consuming," Cardwell said.(Hofferber)

Figuring Her DreamJunior chases childhood dream.

Layout by Dana Davenport

When most people go ice skating, they get the fear of falling and wish that they could do the cool tricks likeseen on television. Others step on the ice and know that is what they are destined to be doing. As a child, watching figure skating on the television captures attention quickly. The tricks, the pretty costumes, the largeamounts of glitter, and the beautiful music arrangements. All these factors cause some to find their role model at ayoung age. Some even can decide their future based on what they see. For one junior, watching television happened to influence one of her favorite hobbies now. Junior Laura Barryhas had the hobby of ice skating since the age of seven. This has been her passion ever since the blades hit theice. "I got into skating by seeing Michelle Kwan skate on television. I thought it was the coolest thing, so I asked mymom to sign me up for lessons," Barry said. Practicing her skating skills at the Ice Box in Lincoln gave Barry the chance to be able to skate more often. Thisgave her the advantage when she was competing in competitions by getting the extra needed ice time. Now it justgives her an advantage when she does her exhibition skating. Exhibition skating is when one gets the opportunityto skate and perform for fun and not with the stress of being judged. This allows for complete freedom on the ice. "I don't compete anymore, but when I did, it was very limited. Only like twice a year. Now I just do exhibitionskating," Barry said. Barry never gave up on her dream of being just like Michelle Kwan. Now that she does not compete, she getsto grow more as a skater with her freedom to do anything. Open ice time and practice time with an instructor helpher to further her dreams.

Fencing is known to many as fighting people with swords. But do all people understand what comes withfencing? One freshman took the opportunity to get to know the sport a little more. Freshman Conner Stewart has been fencing since he was eleven years old. He got the idea to start fromwatching a show on the television and he automatically knew it was something that he wanted to do. "I was watching television and I thought fencing looked cool," Stewart said. Stewart goes to classes once a week on Saturday at the Lincoln Fencing Club. Every time he goes, he gets theopportunity to learn something more. Stewart has enjoyed the sport since he started and plans to continue.

The sweat glimmers on your forehead as you try to hit that onelast striped ball in the pocket. You make the correct angle and goto hit the ball. It was a success. Now just for that last eight ball. Itwent in and you won the tournament. For one sophomore, theseare the feelings he gets every time he gets the chance tocompete. Sophomore Seth Carnes has been playing pool since the ageof seven. He learned all he knows from his parents who havebeen playing since before he was born. "My parents have been playing since before I was born so I juststarted 'following in their footsteps,'" Carnes said. He enters three tournaments each year. Two in the winter andone in the in the summer. The two in the winter are always heldat the Pershing Center in downtown Lincoln and the summercompetition changes each year due to it being a Nationalcompetition. "My team got fourth at the summer tournament, but I got thirdat the winter ones," Carnes said. Learning from parents allows for extra learning even outside ofpractice times. All the practice time and experience paid off for allthe competitions he entered.

Sinking the Eight BallSophomore follows in parent's footsteps.
