Plants that I had thought had been lost seem to have made an appearance, and things that never flowered have flowered, perhaps all thankful for the attention! How sobering to find half the year over and we are still living in a ‘sort of’ lockdown, with restrictions on who, what, where and how! However there does seem to be some movement to lift restrictions on sports, perhaps it could be extended to the odd week or weekend away, staying with friends, family or even at a b and b, it would make life a little more bearable. Obviously we will have to wait and see. Great Cambridge Local Plan

Thank you for joining in with the ‘first conversation’ about the future of Greater Cambridge. With over 6,000 comments online and email and another 30,000 views on YouTube, and at the Big Debate, we have a strong sense of the range of issues that you want to see in the Plan; addressing the following Infrastructure, Climate change, Building and Public Transport. The consultation results are just part of a huge range of evidence and research that we are required to weigh up as part of developing the next stage of the Plan. We are developing and testing scenarios for how the Plan can address the challenges and opportunities for Great Cambridge, to inform the next stages of consultation when we will be asking for your views again. If you want to be kept up to date with all the latest developments on the Local Plan, please register for email updates via our website.

Front Room Repair Cafes

Since May residents have been able to get broken items seen by an experienced Cambridgeshire Repair Café repairer without leaving the house. We have 20+ Repair Cafes in our area, each Wednesday they are on hand to repair most household items, bikes, toys, jewellery, tools, clothes, battery operated electricals and software issues. It’s being done virtually using Zoom and is live so you can interact with the repairer. Details on Cambridgeshire Virtual Repair Café can be found at www.circularcambridge.org/events.

I would like to express on behalf of customers and myself a great big thank you to Linda from the Farm shop and her ‘Girls’ for looking after us so well for the last weeks. They have delivered our orders and looked after us so well. It has really been appreciated. It is really lovely to have such people looking after us all. Thank you again. Janet Oyston

You can find these all over the village, if you find one, don’t take it home, just hide it in another place, so a child can have a little fun finding them. A brilliant idea to brighten up walks around the village.

Please visit our website or facebook page for updated information, or contact either Tony Frost tony,[email protected] 07415230763 or Sandy Watkins [email protected] 01763852869 This is obviously a challenging time for all of us. Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church, Steeple Morden

Diary for July/August

is one of six in the Shingay Group and details of services in all the churches are published monthly

in Prospect. Our website is www.shingaychurches.co.uk

During May services have been conducted online using the Zoom app. If you would like to be involved in these please contact the Rector, Canon Shamus Williams, at [email protected] If you are on Facebook & Twitter #ShingayChurches please do join the group St Peter & St Paul Steeple Morden to keep up with news. On the internet now there is a wide selection of resources from a large number of churches around the world. Can I recommend having a look at Ely Cathedral’s website, especially the section “Worship at Home”. To access the links below, you need to go to https://www.elycathedral.org/worship-at-home From June 15th the church will be open for single contemplation and prayer.

PROSPECT During the current period of 'lockdown', there

will be no door to door delivery of the July copy of Prospect, the

Parish magazine. However, it will be available online and can be accessed by

going to the Parish website www.shingaychurches.co.uk and

clicking on Prospect magazine.

There is a limited print run, and copies will be available at Steeple

Morden Post Office, and also the Litlington Post Office.

FRED ABRAM

Many people in the village will be saddened to learn that Fred Abram passed away last week. Fred was a loyal member of the congregation of Steeple Morden church. A great ‘traditionalist’, and active supporter of The Prayer Book Society he always attended services conducted from ‘The Book of Common Prayer’ and was less than enthusiastic with modern wording and change.

Fred was also a longstanding committee member of The Friends of the church. He was a champion raffle ticket seller, and always gave his enthusiastic support to fundraising events. His financial support for both the church and The Friends will be greatly missed.

Royston’s Rotary Club is launching a virtual balloon race to help people have fun in an eco-friendly way during lockdown.

The project is part of a national event and will take off on September 14, with an aim to keep families entertained and prevent the harm to the environment posed by real balloon races.

Rotarian Tony Briar, from Bassingbourn, said: “First you buy your virtual balloon – as few or as many as you like – from the club at £3 each. You get to choose the shape, colour and helium content.

“Then it will be launched to race for seven days against, hopefully, thousands of others from around 20 fundraising causes.

“It will respond just like a real balloon to wind, temperature and weather and you can track its progress on Google Earth. Those balloons which travel the furthest in a week will be judged the winners.

“The first prize is £500, the second an Apple iPad, and there are lots of lesser prizes. And if the Royston club manages to sell more than 500 balloons, then the one from our area that goes the furthest will get an extra £50.

The balloon race follows the cancellation of the Rotary Club’s annual kite festival due to coronavirus.

Funds raised from the virtual race will go towards the Royston club’s nominated charity Home-Start (Royston, Buntingford and South Cambs). Home-Start has been supporting families sine 1983, working to support those with young children through challenging times.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the charity has been forced to cease all face-to-face home visiting and family support group activities, but is continuing to support families via phone and video link where possible.

Balloons will not be for sale until early July, but you can find out more at the Royston Rotary Club website at www.roystonrotary.com/balloonrace.htm and fill out a form to express an interest in taking part, with no commitment to buy.

To contact Home-Start call 01763 262262 or email [email protected].

Join our Strava Club and Support Home-Start

Do you like to keep fit? Maybe you’re keen to expand your exercise as part of your lockdown routine? Maybe you already use Strava, the activity tracker? This app, if you aren’t already using it, allows you to track the routes you take when you exercise, share your activities with your friends and colleagues and even compete with them, even when you can’t socialise. Home-Start’s own Strava club, HSRBSC Giving Tuesdays has been set up to help our friends, volunteers, supporters and families come together in a virtual way, to get fit together and raise funds for Home-Start’s work in the local area. If you’re already on Strava, why not come and join the HSRBSC club? It’s called “Giving Tuesdays” as it’s part of our lockdown campaign, Giving Tuesdays. Every Tuesday between 7th April and 1st December, we’ll be posting new activities for everyone to take part in on our Home-Start website. The Strava Club is part of this campaign. We’re hoping to see lots of activity from our supporters on the page, so come along and join in! If you’re not already a Strava user, why not sign up? It’s free to use and a really great way to track your fitness, make new friends among our supporters, and connect with other people in the area. You can create virtual challenges for yourself – and others – and all we’re asking is that you donate to Home-Start every time you achieve a personal goal. What could be simpler? If you’d like to know more, you can hop, skip and jump along to our website and click on the Fitness Challenge link: https://www.hsrsc.org.uk/week-4-fitness-challenge/ Or, if you’d like to join the Home-Start club on Strava, head over to our club page: https://www.strava.com/clubs/637391 Or send us an email to learn more: [email protected] Hopefully, we’ll see you online soon! Creative Conversations

You might already be aware of our lockdown campaign, Giving Tuesdays, which sees us posting a new activity every Tuesday until 1st December. If you haven’t yet tried out any of our activities, why not pop along to our website and see what’s on offer!

Next week, 2nd June, is the 9th week of our Giving Tuesdays campaign, and it’s a big one! Sophie Hannah, best-selling author of The Monogram Murders, a new Hercule Poirot novel and a whole series of million-selling crime thrillers, is in conversation with our poet-in-residence Jude Simpson. In this exclusive interview, Sophie and Jude discuss Sophie’s latest book, 'Haven’t They Grown', which is due out in August, along with Sophie’s other work on her DreamAuthor life-coaching course. To give you a taste of the event, take a look at a clip from the interview, which we published as part of Mental Health Awareness Week on 19th May.

Home-Start has been running Literary Lunch events in Royston since 2018, featuring Jude in conversation with a wide range of authors. Sadly, these live events cannot go ahead at the moment, but we believe that this virtual format will provide a platform for us to carry on offering similar events – from the comfort of your own sofa!

This interview is free for you to access (via our Giving Tuesday page), and we’d love for you to share it with your friends and family. Previous Literary Lunches have been restricted to those living within the Royston area, but with our new, virtual versions, this is no longer the case.

We really hope you’ll enjoy this and future events being offered by Home-Start. If you would like to support Home-Start’s work, helping families in the Royston, Buntingford and

SouthCambridgeshire area, they can be contacted:
