Security & Transportation NewsEleven Consequences You May Face if YouGive Up Your CarBy John O. AndersenWarning: If these sound horrific, by all meansdont think another second about partingwith your wheels. 1. Youll have to get used to packing lessinto each day. For instance, most eveningswill be family and home-centered. OnSaturdays, instead of everyone going in fivedifferent directions, you may end up having togo places together, and share the experience.2. Your kids will be forced to ride theirbikes, or walk instead of being chauffeuredeverywhere. And because of the effort required toget around, they may not be able to fit in two sportteams, after school music lessons, and school clubsall in the same week.3. You may need to take up old hobbies like cooking, gardening, or reading to fill up the time you formerlyspent stuck in traffic while doing errands.4. With all of the walking you will be doing as a partof your daily routine, you may be too tired to go tothe gym anymore, and your membership may lapse.5. If you go places as a family, you may need to getthere by foot, bus, or light rail. While waiting for thebus, or train, youll be forced to engage inconversation.6. You may feel compelled to patronize localprivately owned stores (where the profits getplowed back into the local community) instead ofthe big box ones (where the profits go tomultinational corporations) you used to reach with acar. And you may even have to equip your bike witha basket on the front and a rack and panniers on theback just so you can do your grocery shopping.7. Youll lose the feeling of camaraderie, and espritde corps you had with all the motorists with whomyou formerly shared the road during morning, andevening rush hour.

8. You may have to give up the suburbs, for housingcloser to the city center. You may be forced to get

used to having a local park you can reach byfoot, rather than by car.9. You may have to get your entertainmentby listening to the sounds of nature, ornoticing trees, flowers, and uniquearchitecture on your daily walks. You mayhave no choice but to start attending cultural

and seasonal events in the city (parades,Christmas tree lightings, picnics, etc.), insteadof doing tried and proven fun things like driving

down to Blockbuster for a video, piggingout at Taco Bell, or cruising the mall.

10. Your relationships with 100% car dependentfriends may weaken a bit. You may need to get toknow your immediate neighbors since youll bespending less time on the road, and more time inyour immediate neighborhood.11. Your life will slow way down. Without the fastpace, you risk the potentially uncomfortable feelingof frequently being left alone with your thoughts.Security Just a Phone Call AwayCampus security cell phones can be reached fourdifferent ways.
