XIII. STATEMENT OF ACCOMPLISHMENT:

A. CURRENT AREA(S) OF SPECIALIZATION:

My area of specialization is animal husbandry. My teaching responsibilities are

generally within the disciplines of animal nutrition, and animal production and

management. My research focus is in three areas: animal (primarily ruminant)

nutrition, environmental management regarding the use of rural (agricultural) and

urban (municipal) wastes, and animal (sow housing) welfare. I serve as the

coordinator for the interdisciplinary Livestock and Urban Waste Research (LUW)

Team.

B. SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:

I have authored or co-authored grants resulting in the receipt of over $5,408,449 in

external funding ($ directly paid to ISU) and over $417,007 in gifts-in-kind. I have

received over $922,660 in internal funding from ISU. I have authored or co-authored

40 referred articles, 119 refereed abstracts of presentations and over 390 popular press

articles. I have served as the editor for the Transactions of the Illinois Academy of

Science publication and have served as a scientific reviewer for the Journal of Animal

Science, Journal of Environmental Management, Bioresource Technology, Natural

Resources and Life Sciences, Waste Management and Research, Journal of Hydrology

Current Research, Applied Engineering in Agriculture, International Journal of

Molecular Sciences and the Journal of Waste Water Treatment and Analysis. I have

presented numerous invited seminars at state, regional and national professional and

trade meetings and author a livestock nutrition column in one nationally circulated and

one state popular trade magazine.

I routinely serve as a paid consultant for private companies regarding waste

management issues on both a national and international basis. I have previously

consulted for a Japanese Export Firm and for the Japan Department of Agriculture and

Fishery. I am consistently called upon to share my leadership with various

professional associations at the local, state and national levels. I previously served as

a Board of Director member for the Food Recovery and Recycling Association of

North America and the Illinois Simmental Association. I, also, serve or have

previously served as a member of several state boards and/or task forces including the

Illinois Advisory Board of Livestock Commissioners, the Illinois Food Animal

Institute, the Illinois Recycled Content Products Task Force, and the Lt. Governors

Composting Regulations Task Force and the Illinois Department of Agriculture

Animal Identification Steering Committee.

Our research initiatives have been the recipient of several awards and international

notoriety. I received the 1993 Illinois Recycling Association Outstanding

Achievement in Recycling Research and Development award and the LUW Team was

awarded a 1998 Illinois Governors Pollution Prevention Certificate. I am a member of

the Beef Quality Initiative Research Team that received the 2000 Illinois C-FAR

Achievement Award for outstanding and innovative team research and outreach. I am

the coordinator and a team member of the Livestock and Urban Waste Research Team

that received the 2003 Illinois C-FAR Achievement Award and the 2006 Illinois State

University Team Research Award for outstanding and innovative team research. I

have received the Outstanding University Researcher Award (2003), Teacher Award

(1987) and Faculty Service Award (2000). In 2008 I received the Illinois Pork

Producers Association Industry Spotlight Award recognizing our service to and

research for the Illinois Swine Industry. In 2009 I was inducted into the ISU Million

Dollar Club recognizing external grants and contributions.

Realizing that research and teaching are mutually supportive activities I have actively

involved undergraduate students in our research program. Several of these students

have been recognized for outstanding achievement in research. Among the

recognition, students I have personally supervised have received top awards for

presenting undergraduate competition papers at the Midwestern Section American

Society of Animal Science meetings, have been recognized as the CAST Outstanding

Undergraduate Student Researcher and as the CAST Outstanding Graduate Student.
