The academic year lasts 9 months, starting on lst October and ending in the middle of June.
It is divided into two semesters; winter semester (October to January) and summer semester (mid-
February to May).
A two-week exam session is held at the end of each semester. An inter-semester break lasts from mid-
January to mid-February.
There are several vacation breaks: the winter break lasts from 23rd December to 1st January and one
week in February, the spring break falls at the time of Easter, and the summer break is from mid-June
till the end of September.
Rector's days. Sometimes the Rector of AMU may decide that no classes will be held on certain days
for important reasons the Rector may decide that no classes will be held on certain days (e.g. Day of
Sport, A Student's Day - Juvenalia). These days are scheduled in the Academic Calendar.

Dean' hours: with regard to some important reasons (e.g. elections of self-government authorities) and
in extraordinary circumstances the Dean may suspend classes for a few hours. These days are NOT
scheduled in the Academic Calendar. Your Erasmus Coordinator and your mentors will pass
this message to you, but also you can ask your fellow students from your language groups to tell
you about the Dean’s hours.
RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY:
Easter (a non-fixed holiday) - one of the most important public holidays, which is full of tradition,
eggs are painted and special food is prepared, celebrated in March or April.
Corpus Christi - Celebrated 60 days after Easter (mostly in June), Corpus Christi is both a national
and a religious holiday. It is marked by religious processions through towns and villages, prayer, and
attendance of church services.
Ascension of Virgin Mary (15th August) - August 15th celebrates the Virgin Mary's assent into
heaven. The day is marked by religious observances, including church attendance,
All Saints Day (1st November) - on this day people go to cemeteries to light candles and pray for the
ones who have passed away.
Christmas Eve and Christmas (25th -26th December) - Christmas Eve is the most important
Christians holiday in Poland and is called Wigilia, It is marked with a special meal, often made up of
12 meatless dishes, and observance of Christmas Eve traditions. The Christmas tree is typically
decorated on this day. A large dinner may also be prepared for Christmas Day.
NATIONAL HOLIDAY
Labour Day (1st May) - typically a day of rest
Constitution Day (3rd May - on this day in 1791 Poland proclaimed its modern codified constitution.
It is often marked with parades and other public displays of celebration.
National Independence Day (11th November) - on this day in l9l8 Poland regained independence
after 123 years of partition . It is also a day devoted to Saint Martin, one of the most popular saints
among Poznań citizens
Temporary residence permit
To receive the confirmation of your residence in Kalisz Dormitory you need to fill in an application
form which is called: ZGŁOSZENIE POBYTU CZASOWEGO TRWAJĄCEGO PONAD 3
MIESIĄCE (RESIDENCE APPLICATION FORM). The form is issued by the immigration office
here in Kalisz.
The official document (RESIDENCE APPLICATION FORM) that will be, or has already been,
completed by you is in A5 size and its print is red. The residence is reported for you by the Dorm
Managers Daria Sosińska-Górecka or Karolina Śmigalska. You are required to submit the residence
application form (and the passport) at the Dorm Manager Office, who needs to Xerox some of its
pages. The Dorm Manager registers your residency here at the Town Residence Office as a regular
Erasmus BA or MA student for the whole period of your Erasmus study.

Grading system
The grading system used at Adam Mickiewicz University, whose name is abbreviated as AMU or
UAM, is as follows:

This translates into the following ECTS (European internationally recognised system) grading scale:

Here is a list of the things that must be dealt with in the first few days of your stay at our
Faculty and at the end of your studying period at AMU:

USOS account
Student Card (Legitymacja Studencka)
Here, in Poland you can get discounts, cheaper prices and many other privileges almost everywhere if
you are a student. During the following academic year you are going to be a part of our students body
and you will be given for this reason an electronic Student Card (Legitymacja Studencka). It will be
also necessary for you to prove that you belong to Adam Mickiewicz University in the event of any
official questioning. Also, with your SC you are allowed to check out books at the library.
Erasmus+ students
You can pick up your SC at the ARTEM DOCENDI room (Eliza Piotrowska) after payment of the
required fee. The cost of SC is 17 PLN (around 4,5 Euros). All of you will be assigned a personal
bank number in USOS (the university data management system where all university students are
registered) which will be needed to make payment. To check the assigned bank account number,
log in to USOSweb, go to student’s section and then My studies, Payment.
You may make an electronic transfer or go personally to the bank with the personal number
aforementioned and pay in cash. The payment account is with PKO-BP (Bank Polski). There are

many bank offices around the city, but you can find below the address of the closest to our building
and to the city centre.

The SC is valid for one specific semester, as indicated by a hologram sticker on the back surface of
the card. The card is valid only with the current semester sticker. You can get the sticker each term at
the Student Center Office, its office hours:

Please, remember that you first have to make the payment to get your Student Card. Bring the copy of
the payment receipt when you come to Eliza’s office.
Also, if you have trouble with accessing your student USOS account to retrieve the SC bank
number, please go and see Eliza Piotrowska (during her office hours); she will help you.
Library / Biblioteka
As a student of our faculty you are able to borrow books from the Faculty Library in Kalisz, as well as
Main University Library in Poznań and all the other libraries in Poznań. In order to do so please bring
your student card to the Faculty library at Nowy Świat 28-30 and register. You will be issued with an
electronic library card for a charge of 10 PLN. The card should be carried on all visits to the Library
and is required for borrowing. It can be also used to log in to the library electronic database or to place
books on hold.

You can search library resources by using the search tool at: http://amu.summon.serialssolutions.com/en/It will
allow you to browse all resources (also electronic items) in all university libraries, also those in Poznań.
Learning Agreement (LA)
It is possible to change subjects on your arrival at our Faculty. Today you will receive a classes
schedule and a list of all subject available in English to choose from. When you decide about the
courses, you need to remember that your Erasmus ECTS points must total 30 per semester and 60 per a
whole academic year (unless your university Coordinator agrees to fewer ECTS).
Your Learning Agreement (or "changes" to it) needs to be signed by the Faculty Coordinator (both
your home and host institution) and you. While establishing your syllabus you can choose from
almost all the courses offered at English Studies Department and from those available in English at
Visual Arts and Music studies at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts (WPA) in Kalisz. The Faculty
Erasmus Coordinator will help you to find the courses you are most interested in.

Examinations
Before the examination period you need an Examination Card / Karta egzaminacyjna. Here your
teachers sign your course final and exam grades.
AMU examination periods are the first two weeks of February and the last two weeks of June (see the
Calendar for exact dates). At the end of each university term and at the end of the full academic year
you are obliged to obtain grades for each course you take. Also some courses terminate in exams (this
applies to English Philology incoming students only) at the end of winter and/or spring term (there are
only 2 semesters at our university and two exam periods). You need to pass the exams here in Kalisz.
Before you leave Kalisz you will receive a Transcript of Records (=your grades list), only the pass
grade for a course entitles you to be awarded ECTS points.
Attendance
Attendance is also taken into account when grading your course performance. Usually students are
allowed 2 unexcused absences per semester, all the other ones need to be excused by some official
form, like f.ex a doctor’s excuse. All students attendance is recorded by a course instructor

Library Clearance Slip
In order to be able to get your Transcript of Records you need to submit the Library Clearance Slip /
Karta obiegowa - a statement from the library that you have returned all the books. You can
download this form earlier at http://erasmuswpa.amu.edu.pl/en/main-page/start/library-biblioteka .
Examination Card / Karta egzaminacyjna
Before the examination period you need an Examination Card / Karta egzaminacyjna. You need to
pick your courses and then complete the blank form of the Examination Card that will be emailed to
you by the Erasmus Coordinator. Please have all your grades written down in the card and signed by
the teachers and bring it to the coordinator at the end of your Erasmus stay in Kalisz , before your
departure. On the basis of this card your Transcript of Records will be issued by the coordinator.
Transcript of Records (TR)
This AMU official form that list your final courses grades and courses ECTS. You need to pick your
courses and then complete the blank form of the TR that will be emailed to you by the Erasmus
Coordinator.

SAFETY If you feel sick, don’t wait too long to see a doctor. It’s reasonable to wait 3-4 days to see if you can
get better using over-the-counter drugs you’ve bought at the pharmacy. But, if you aren’t getting
better, don’t wait till you are almost passed out or in an overwhelming pain. Ask me, Eliza, or any
mentor to help you go and see a doctor. It’s a simple and easily arranged visit. You have an insurance,
you will be reimbursed (a doctor’s fee is around 50 PLN). Prescription drugs are more effective and
50% cheaper than the over-the-counter medicines.
Don’t wait till Friday evening to ask for help to see a doctor! It’s more convenient to go to a nearby
health center on a weekday than to the hospital at the weekend.
Never carry large amount of money on you!!! NEVER.
If you need to withdraw a bigger sum from an ATM, take it and leave immediately at your Dorm
room. Don’t go to any shop on the way (or if you really have to, hide the cash deep under your
clothing, don’t take it out to get some change when paying for your purchase!).
If you are approached by someone who tells you to give them money, walk away immediately. If you
feel threatened (the situation looks like mugging), shout HELP and walk away quickly. Ask directly
the nearby passer-by for help, ask them to call the police.
Be smart! Don’t walk alone late at night to some dark and isolated places!

Bikes are stationed at 12 docking points (one right next to the Dorm at the bus stop). See the map
below (https://kaliskirowermiejski.pl/mapa-stacji/ )
To rent a bike, go to https://kaliskirowermiejski.pl/en , register, accept the regulations and make a
membership payment of minimum 10 PLN. Once the payment is registered by the city bike banking
system, you can rent a bike. You can use a bike only if there is at least 10 PLN in your bike rent
account (it keeps your account alive). The first 30 min is free. You can find out more at the Kalisz
