The Thesis investigation was inspired by Karl Marx’s idea of fetishism of commodities, understood as a reified perception of social relations involved in production. Implications of this are visible in the way we use and consume our resources throughout their lifecycle, with the legacies of planned obsolescence and throw-away society being the reflection of the modern society’s attitude to excess.

The notions explored are manifested spatially in West Hampstead in London. An originally industrial site, associated with a strong community of low and middle income families

with good public service support is in the process of developer-induced transformation into a new destination for City-worker Londoners, with house prices set to exclude the existing social fabric. The GLA Growth area, due to austerity low public spending policies and strong liberties given to private investors will become a socially divided part of London, adding to the physical divides of living in between train lines. The Design Thesis forms a critique to this status quo encountered, and an investigation to a different urban masterplan model, using Hans Bernoulli’s ideas of self-restoring communal land ownership countering the fragmented land development.

08 ACADEMIC WORK: student retreat, cardiffMArch 1 Project | Welsh School of Architecture

The Student’s Retreat is a new high qual-ity hub for Cardiff University, bringing under one roof facilities dedicated to a broadly understood spiritual life of students as well as counselling services and public gathering spaces.

Today, over 10% of students in Cardiff come from overseas countri. As the cultural rich-ness within the student community develops, the need for integration and mutual coopera-tion is recognised as key in galvanising Car-diff University’s strong presence internation-ally as a centre of academic excellence.

By its very definition the new centre will be accessible and welcoming to individuals of all (non)religious denominations whilst support-ing the University’s ethos of a multicultural campus and creative cultural exchange within the student body.

In the search for the sublime, art steps out of its original frame constricted by religious dogma and begins to explore different ways of manifesting the Spiritual and the Dread-ful – e.g. Weather Project by Olafur Eliasson, works of Damien Hirst (The tranquillity of solitude, A thousand years)and Bill Viola (The Messenger).

The main challenge in translating this rheto-ric into my own architectural resolution is cre-ating spaces which stimulate individual expe-rience whilst strengthening the community which surrounds the individual. Finally how does one allow the informality, (profanum) of the scheme to naturally coexist with the sacrum of spaces dedicated to specific reli-gious or non-religious activities?

Furniture Recycling Project - the local sustainable initiative endangered by the potential restorations to the existing warehouse buildings

annotated photograph of the 1:500 site model, showing the project in the wider context of Gloucester Docks masterplan

The recently restored historic docks in Gloucester seem surprisingly untouched and deserted. A generous programme of investements, aimed at catalysing an urban renaissance to the run down community resulted in empty high-end housing and commercial spaces, which are unaffordable for an average inhabitant of the city.

This context sets the brief for the project - city as a wilderness - as an investigation into architectural strategies, which produce resilient and sustainable urban fabric, acknowledging both the heritage of those spaces, as well as the future needs of the communities inhabiting them.

The scheme proposes a mixed use institution, comprising furniture and

boat workshops as well as commercial and exhibition spaces. An important theme reflected in the building’s architecture is the the interweaving of academic and professional realms, alluding to Richard Sennet’s notion of craft as a way of establishing health and vitality in the community.

existing public space cafe: internal view

The National Theatre in London has recently planned to renovate the smallest of its 3 auditoria - the Cottesloe Theatre, which houses mainly contemporary and experimental plays. In order to ensure continuity of the programme it has been proposed to erect a temporary theatre, adjoining the NT building, which would stay in place during the two years during which the works are carried out.

As an extension to the formal brief further design aims have been set, which stem from the study of the site and surrounding urban tissue.

Through the implementation of the project the aspiration was to rethink and enhance the relationship between the two main pedestrian flows (east-west Queens Walk north-south Waterloo Station – National Theatre link), reanimate the currently underused terraces of the National Theatre and to create a strong vivid relationship between the temporary theatre and the host building.

ACADEMIC WORK: l’ombriere parametrique

L’Ombriere Parametrique was a practical project which involved design and fabrication of a shading canopy for the Baseball Stadium in Lyon. The maximise the the canopy’s efficiency, we chose to create a script which will: // divide any curved surface into a set number of triangular components;

// create holes at each corner with sizes directly dependant on the angle between the tangent to the surfacre at a given point and the position of the sun at noon // create another set of smaller light diffuser holes, with their number directly dependant on the size of the component

// create suitable timber connectors to hold the structure The canopy has been exhibited at the School of Architecture in Lyon, and used in the stadium during the summer.

Levitate Architecture and Design Studio

proposed site plan, showing relationship between the mill buildings

PROFESSIONAL WORK: FRIARS MILL, LEICESTER

I joined Levitate in August 2013 to become a member of a 7-strong design team based in London. During my time at the practice I had a chance to actively participate in several projects varying from household extensions and competition entries to large commercial schemes, including the refurbishment and adaptation of a grade II listed industrial mill building in Leicester to managed office spaces for young entrepreneurs. Within the last 9 months I had the unique opportunity to be involved in the project right from its inception at a feasibility stage, through to

planning and preparation of the tender package, with the proposed scheme to go on site in July 2014. Throughout my placement I gradually accrued autonomy in my own work to become responsible for internal project management or tender package drawings in April 2014.

The proposed scheme comprised of refurbishment and restoration of the 3 existing mill buildings, together with 2 extensions, including a new circulation core to Friars Mill and replacement building for Bath Lane Cottages. The

detailing of new buildings has been carefully considered to compliment the industrial nature of the existing brick fabric, whilst clearly defining the new additions. One of the design challenges was achieving an optimal density on the site, which has been stripped from adjoining non-listed buildings, with a resulting large amount of left-over land. The landscaping strategy was to target and intensify potential activity in smaller parts of the site, such as e.g. the canalside, with the rest of the land left aside to be further developed in the future.

The scheme involves new pedestrian access provision to the Jewry Wall Museum and the Castle Gardens in Leicester. The complex levels at the entrance to the site are resolved by introducing a new pavilion entrance, together with a gentle ramp, design to appear to gently touch the site of the Roman ruins. The practice was chosen by Leicester City Council (The Client) as the Project Architect after a competitive tender and interview held in March 2014.

The practice submitted a feasibility study for the development of the site at the end of July 2014.

Whilst working on the project as part of the design team I prepared 3D models of the site and the proposed scheme (both numerous physical 1:200 cardboard models and a digital model in Sketch Up), which allowed testing various ramp solutions in 3D.

PROFESSIONAL WORK: OUNDLE CRICKET PAVILION, OUNDLELevitate Architecture and Design Studio

The scheme was chosen through a competition held in November 2013. As part of the design team, I have prepared graphical documentation for the competition entry.

The proposed building replaces the school’s existing pavilion with a new triangular building, featuring a roof

cantilevered over the spectators’ terrace.

Changing rooms and service areas are contained within the triangular building’s shorter sides, freeing up the centre of the plan and the full-height glazed long side of the triangle for functions.Following the succesful outcome of the competition, I worked on the planning

permission application for the scheme, which has been submitted to the local authority, East Northamptonshire Council in March 2014.

I have assisted the Project Architect in preparation of the tender stage drawings for the scheme; work on site started in July 2014.

28 PROFESSIONAL WORK: ORCHARD HOUSE, SWINDONLevitate Architecture and Design Studio

The scheme was for a new 4 bedroom detached house, located in Lower Blunsdon Conservation Area. The house has been designed for a Private Client who lives in the nearby Orchard House and decided to divide his plot to allow for a new dwelling to be erected.

The design aimed to reconciliate contemporary design with the vernacular of the surrounding area, through a use of the local sandstone and render for cladding and a compartmentalised massing, relating to the small pitched roof extensions of the neighbouring dwellings.

Whilst working on this project, I have prepared planning permission application drawings and other graphical documentation, as well as a design and access and heritage statements.

30 PROFESSIONAL WORK: old rectory close, suttonLevitate Architecture and Design Studio

The scheme involves alterations and extensions to a dwelling located in a Walton on the Hill conservational area. These involve demolition of the existing 1-storey extensions and erection of a new single storey garden facing extension

as well a double storey side extension, incorporating extended living areas, a new games room and a master bedroom. The new extension will be clad in vertically hung tiles to match the roof finish of the existing house. The generous amount of

south-facing glazing will bring a good amount of daylight into the house whilst opening up the house to its vast garden space.

The model is part of a larger Heritage Lottery Fund Project, which involves mapping the waterways of Cardiff and engaging people in research to populate the map with stories, documents and imagery, pinned according to history and geography.

The aim of this model, commissioned by Art Shell for the introductory launch of the project, was to encourage exhibition visitors to participate in changing the image of their city, through the means of creative manipulation of the built environment. The model consists of the engraved map of Cardiff as existing today, overlaid with the network of canals and feeders (back-lit through a light-box underneath), as taken from a historic map of the city (dated 1905). Interaction with the model creates a layered collage of the past, present and future representations of Cardiff.
