SEMINARS AND PRACTICAL EXERCISES: Department of Preclinical Conservative
Dentistry and Preclinical Endodontics PMU (Zakład Stomatologii Zachowawczej

AIMS OF EDUCATION: The aim of education is to create a dentist who can cooperate with
the child patient, solves its dental problems and proceeds to keep total health of the oral
cavity.
SEMINARS’ THEMES: –
PRACTICAL EXERCISES’ THEMES:
1. The differences between the primary and permanent teeth (discussion and
recognition).
2. Prophylactic fissure sealants in children. The procedure of fissure sealing. Fissure
sealing of the first upper permanent molar.
3. Caries of the children’s teeth (primary and immature permanent teeth) – part 1.
Cavity preparation – general rules. Different head position according to the tooth
localization. Class I (by Black) – cavity preparation and amalgam restoration.
4. Caries of the children’s teeth (primary and immature permanent teeth) – part 2.
Class II (by Black) – cavity preparation and glass-ionomer restoration.
5. The procedure of the formocresol pulpotomy in the primary teeth. Anatomy of the
pulp chamber.

AIMS OF EDUCATION: a student should be able to cooperate with a child patient, to
conduct dental prophylaxis and simple caries treatment and aspires to total health of the oral
cavity.
SEMINARS’ THEMES:
1. Fundamentals of the caries prophylaxis in children.
2. The possibilities of the primary and permanent teeth reinforcement. Systemic and
topical fluoride application - part 1.
3. The possibilities of the primary and permanent teeth reinforcement. Systemic and
topical fluoride application - part 2.
4. Prophylactic fissure sealing of the children’s teeth.
5. The role of diet in caries prophylaxis.
6. Oral health care promotion.
7. Planning of caries preventive programs in paediatric dentistry.
8. Scheme of prophylaxis and treatment (preventive and therapeutic plan) in paediatric
dentistry.
9. A child as a dental patient - part 1 – problem of fear and pain.
10. A child as a dental patient - part 2 – techniques of adaptation.
11. Caries of the primary teeth.
12. Caries of the immature permanent teeth.
13. Diseases of the pulp in the primary teeth – problems with diagnosing and treatment –
part 1.
14. Diseases of the pulp in the primary teeth – problems with diagnosing and treatment –
part 2.
15. Diseases of the pulp in immature permanent teeth.
PRACTICAL EXERCISES THEMES:
1. The methods of keeping up an effective oral hygiene in children. Oral hygiene indices: API (Approximal Plaque Index), Pl.I. (plaque index by Silness and Löe), OHI (Oral Hygiene Index). Toothbrushing techniques: rolling, circular by Fones, modified Bass technique. Diagram.
2. Professional tooth cleaning by Axelsson. Topical fluoride applications (part 1): mechanism of fluoride effect in caries prevention. Varnishes containing fluoride.
3. Topical fluoride applications (part 2): methods and preparations. Method of Knutson. Application of fluoride gel on the custom-made tray. Fluoride iontophoresis.
4. Fissure sealing in children (part 1): prophylactic fissure sealing, PRR (preventive resin restorations). Diagnosing the fissures condition: visual inspection and probing, laser fluorescence (Diagnodent). Fissure sealants.
5. Fissure sealing in children (part 2). 6. Caries in children’s teeth (primary and immature permanent teeth). The rules of
preparating cavities. Restorative materials in paediatric dentistry. 7. Oral Health Promotion for children (visit in a kindergarten/ poster/ PPT presentation) 8 – 14 – clinical exercises
15. Test.
REGULATIONS OF DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY P MU:
Students are obliged to be present and active during theoretical and practical classes.
Absence may be justified by presenting a certification from physician or in case of
serious life cases. Absence must be made up. A student will not get a credit of Paedodontics
and Dental Prophylaxis if she/he has 3 unjustified cases of absence.
Student’s knowledge is verified during practical exercises. Students who are
continuously insufficiently prepared for seminars and practical exercises will be additionally
examined from all the seminars’ themes.
Each student is obliged to document his/her dental procedures (patient’s history,
copybook).
1. To get the credit a student is obliged to collect the following procedures during the
clinical exercises:
− oral hygiene indices:
o fuchsin test 1
o API 2
o plaque index test 2
− toothbrushing technique 4
− professional teeth cleaning 2
− fluoride varnish 1
− Knutson’s method 1
− toothbrushing with fluoride containing preparations 4
− fluoride iontophoresis/ fluoride gel or floam on custom made tray 2
− fissure sealing 5
− oral health promotion in kindergarten 1
− treatment of simple caries 3
2. Oral credit based on knowledge from seminars and practical exercises.
VERIFICATION OF THE EDUCATIONAL RESULTS:
A student have to do all the practical procedures mentioned in Regulations of Department of
Paediatric Dentistry. Student’s knowledge is verified during practical exercises.
SKILLS AND REFERENCES: A student should be able to examine a child, plan
prophylaxis and dental treatment and do simple caries preventive and treatment procedures.
