m an has been endowed with this special capa
city for abstract thinking, for reoching beyond
what is - at the moment - within the grasp of his powers of
cognition One expression of this peculiar trail can be seen,
for instance, in the trompe-l'U!il technique popular in the
Baroque period. Using the means at their disposa/, artists
attempted to transcend the limit of the spolia/ surroundings,
and to capture phenomena beyond human senses.
Multimedia, the emergence and development of which
were made possible by human achievements in the field of
technology, enabled theatre to open its audiences to new
woys of perceiving reality, including how they behold the
reo/ms of the stage, by offering o journey ta a different
dimension. Multimedia technologies moy thus be cons1dered
a tao/ used to develop o thought which wo bom in on era
long post and continues to graw and evolve.
The Baroque also saw the formotion of the concept of
drammo per musica: the ideo of performing a drama piece
with th use of music, which gove rise ta a new genre - the
opera. The concept can be described in terms of on experi
ment meont to ensure, through employing specific solutions,
both ortistic and structural, the work's en/1onced impoct
on the viewer. This initiotive originoted in the forum of o group of oris tocrats who followed the eJ<ample of Ploto's
Acodemy in cultivating the trodition of discourse concern
ing ort and science.
TI1is common debate convenlion i invoked by the for
mula of the conference organised by the Kroków Opero.
fis ottendees will include artists whose achievements on
be classified as ovont-gorde, since they push the envelope
on the ort of theatre and on its individual elements. Their
actions make the ideas and imaginings of post artist unveil
surprising, never-before-suspected visoges.

Multimedia have become a fixture of the range of solutions used in contemporary
opera thE>atre. Sometimes. they are meant to reinfarce the impact of traditional
theatrica/ techniques, sametimes they work as an enlivening counterpoint ta the
conventional artistic message, and some ather time they tum into a dominant note
which allows the artists to create new qualities of the opera genre.
Taday, an opera house is na /anger the sole place to stage and perform vacal
and instrumental warks. Other equally gaad venues include factaries (Bernd Alois
Zimmermann 's "Die Soldaten" at the Jahrhundertha/le in Bochum, 2006), historical
interiars of museums rLuci Mie Traditrici' at the Poznań National Museum, 2009)
ar specially canstructed cubes with very specific acaustic qualities (Beat Furrer 's
"Fama" at the Danauhallen in Donaueschingen, 2005).

zy opera może zaistnieć w przestrzeni miejskiej
pozo kontekstem przypisanego jej budynku i instytucji?
gotowane we wspófpracy z Capellą Cracoviensis i je1
dyrektorem Janem Tomaszem Adamusem: opera .Orfeo

Claudia Monteverdiego w barze mlecznym (. Bar okowa

plenerowego, realizowane jest marzenie Feli o Mendels
sohna o wykonywaniu jego . Lieder im Freien zu singen ''

Can opera e'<ist in urban space outside the context of the building and insti

and inspire their interpretations?
An attempt to answer those ques tions takes the form of performances pre
pared in co/laboration with Capella Cracoviensis, and its directo1; /an Tomasz
Adamus. The opera "Orpheus and Eurydice" was staged ot one of Kraków's
gyms, a11d performed, among others, by the seniors who usually attend the place

New technologies enable the e>.ecutwn of any directo
rial fantasy, are engrossing, spectacular, and appropriate
especia/ly for opera performances, which by definition are
broad scale and utilise large spaces. They are also dan
gerous, because - as is the case with any new thing - it is
easy to overindulge. A creator, with such a medium at their
disposal. should never farget that the true heart of the
ploy lies in expressing truth about the human condition,
and this is only possible to convey through living theotre.

Opo lski Teatr Lalki i Aktora im. Alojzego Smolki. W pracy
zawodowej korzysta również z doświadczeń, jakie zdobywa
dzięki swoim zainteresowaniom związanym z informatyką oraz fotografią .
W teatrze coraz częściej stosowane są obecnie środki
przekazu wypracowane w obrębie innych dziedzin. Należą
do nich min. multimedia.
możliwości oddziaływania na widza i pozwala zaskoczyć go
nowymi efektami.
dbać o to, by stanowiły one integralną część przedstawie
nia i dopełniały jego sens.

Theatre is increasingly open to the use of media ori
ginating from other discip/ines. These include multimedia.
They provide the capability of creating any set imaginable
and of changing it in a split second. lt also /ets us fully
synchranise the image, sound, and video recordings. so
mething impo sible to achieve through any other means.
Furthermore, the use of multimedia in theatre enhances
the scope of inf/uencing the viewer and a/lows us to sur

that those means . upplemenr the meaning of the perfor

Opera is a genre whose central tenet /ies in the syn
thesis of arts: the conjunction of music and of the word,
gesture, dance, acting, and visual arts. The vision of the
director and the set designer, as well as the broadly defi
ned graphic art which supports the farmer two, are means
of staging and illustrating music immensely important to
opera, and so I see no reason why the opera stage sho
uld ever shun new technologies. However, since theatre,
just as opera at its best, detests cheapness, I would pose
one condition. new technologies need to be used here in
a manner thai is artistically measured and pitch perfect
technique-wise.

N arrację historii ukrytej w starych murach rozpoczyna ad.a. klucznika Skotuby - jednego z bohaterów opery .Straszny dwór" Stanistawa Moniuszki. Dziedziniec Collegium Maius zamienia się w stare zamczysko. Kichnięcie Skołuby po zażyciu tabaki, które wedtug
dawnych wierzeń bi,ilo częścią rytuatu wypędzania złych duchów, przenosi akcj ę spektaklu do świata oper Wolfganga Amadeusza Mozarta: .Wesela Figara" oraz .Don Giovanniego".
Kolejny obraz dotyczy histori i m i tośc i Ariadny i Tezeusza, o której opowiada opera .Ariadna na Naxos" Richarda traussa.

The subsequent image concerns the story of the love be tween Ariadne and
Theseus, as told in Richard Strauss' opera "Ariadne on Naxos" The despondent
princess, abandoned by her Lover, is heered up by a group of companions who
include Zerbrnetta - a character from the commedia dell'arte woven into the
mythtcal plot. Over on the horizon, Bacchus' ship hovers, soon to take Ariadne
off the is and. The atmosphere of joyous celebration is upheld by the next part of
the show: the famous Libiomo from Giuseppe Verdi's "Traviata". The main plot of
the libretto deals with the tragedy of Violetta, a woma n suffering from a terminal
disease, who, in additLOn . has to renounce love. A moment later comes Habanero
from Georges Bizet's opera - the seductive song of Carmen, whose fale marks
another tragedy We also hear the aria of one of her adorers , the toreador Esca
millo. The projeclLOn features the rnotif of a dagger, used by Don Jose, iealous of
Carmen's favours, to strike the hermne.
dagger is also an important prop in the staging of Giacomo Puccim's opera
"Madame Butterfly" The lead theme of the lib retto is the story of the unhappy
love of a Japanese girl. Cio-(10 an (Butterfly) to a .S. Naval Officer, Pinker
ton. The ana Un bel di, vedremo is accompanied by a projection of elements
related to Japanese culture : flowers, lanterns, and the ocean, in which Butterfly
sees her son . carried away by a little boat. Up from the ocean emerges gold . one
of the motif of the llbretto of the "The Gypsy Baron" operetta and the subject of
the operetta's trio tn the Treosure Waltz. The music moves to Sandor Barinkay's
waliz- rhythm aria Ais flotter Ceist. When the gypsy caravan drives off, the
viewer is brought into the fairy-tale world of the next spectaclc through shadow
theatre. The proiection will incorporate elements of the "Cinderetla" balle t per
formance illustrated with the music of Gloacchino Rossini. Cinderella sets out for
the ball where - like in the classicćll ta le - she meets her Prince. The projection
shows the pendulum of a huge clock, making the girl, a long with the audience,
return to rea lity
