Uroczystość Wszystkich Świętych, którą dziś celebrujemy w

naszym Sanktuarium to święto świętości. Jan Paweł II często nam po-

wtarzał, byśmy nie bali się dążyć do świętości. Świętość to powoła-

nie każdego ochrzczonego człowieka, zadanie do wykonania dla

każdego, kto w niebie upatruje swojej ojczyzny na wieczność. Dzisiej-

sze społeczeństwo często deprecjonuje, a czasem wręcz ośmiesza

dążenie do świętości, bo społeczeństwo to głosi konsumpcjonizm, czyli

wyższość materii nad duchem. Tymczasem świadkowie świętości na-

szych czasów jak Jan Paweł II czy Matka Teresa z Kalkuty przekazu-

ją nam prawdę, że człowiek jest powołany do życia według ducha, a

nie ciała. Dziś, oddając hołd niezliczonej rzeszy znanych i nieznanych

świętych, a jednocześnie modląc się o życie wieczne dla

naszych bliskich zmarłych na nowo rozpalmy w sobie

pragnienie bycia świętymi, czyli pragnienie życia w

pełnej jedności z Chrystusem.

Feast of All Saints, which we celebrate today in our

Shrine is a feast of holiness. John Paul II has often told us

that we should not be afraid to strive for holiness. Holi-

ness is the vocation of every baptized person; a duty to

do for anyone who in heaven sees his homeland forever.

Today's society often depreciates, and sometimes in ridicule style pur-

suit the desire of holiness, because society proclaims consumerism,

namely the supremacy of matter over spirit. Meanwhile, witnesses of

the holiness of our time as John Paul II or Mother Teresa of Calcutta

communicate to us the truth that man is called to life of the spirit, not

body. Today, paying tribute to countless known and unknown saints,

praying for eternal life for our deceased loved ones again let us fire

up a desire to be saints, desire to live in full communion with Christ.

Źródłem cierpliwości Boga jest Jego miłość do

człowieka, którego stworzył na swój obraz i podobi-

eństwo oraz któremu została dana możliwość skruchy i

pojednania z Bogiem. Bóg traktuje grzeszników z

miłością i dobrocią wychowawcy, jeśli tylko podejmują

oni dzieło nawrócenia i zdecydowanie odcinają się od

grzechu.

Nawrócenie jest zawsze darem miłości

miłosiernej Pana Boga. Doświadczył jej ewangelic-

zny celnik Zacheusz, który pragnie dobrowolnie

zwrócić skrzywdzonym ludziom więcej, niż nakazuje

sprawiedliwość, bo ma świadomość popełnionego zła,

bo uznaje swoją winę. I oto Jezus, poznając jego

serce, wychodzi mu naprzeciw i dokonuje w jego życiu

tej zasadniczej przemiany, która odnawia w nim

obraz Boga. Syn Człowieczy przyszedł przecież na

świat po to, by szukać i zbawić to, co zginęło (Łk 19,

10).

Miłość Boga osiąga swój szczyt w posłaniu Jezusa

Chrystusa, który przyszedł zbawić każdego

człowieka, jeśli tylko zechce on zauważyć i przyjąć

Zbawiciela, jak to uczynił Zacheusz, który otworzył

przed Jezusem swoje serce. Dzisiaj Boże zbawienie

przychodzi do nas, aby odnowić nasze życie: by

udoskonalić w nas wszelkie pragnienie dobra, ożywić

w nas Bożego ducha i utwierdzić nas w Bożej miłości.

Czy jesteśmy gotowi przyjąć z wiarą dar

zbawienia udzielony nam w Jezusie Chrystusie?

What would you do if Jesus knocked on

your door and said, "I must stay at your house

today"?

Would you be excited or embarrassed? Jesus

often "dropped-in" at unexpected times and he

often visited the "uninvited" — the poor, the lame,

and even public sinners like Zacchaeus, the tax

collector! Tax collectors were despised and

treated as outcasts, no doubt because they over-

charged people and accumulated great wealth

at the expense of others. Zacchaeus was a chief

tax collector and was much hated by all the peo-

ple.

Why would Jesus single him out for the

honor of staying at his home?

Zacchaeus needed God's merciful love and in

his encounter with Jesus he found more than he

imagined possible. He shows the depth of his re-

pentance by deciding to give half of his goods to

the poor and to use the other half for making res-

titution for fraud. Zacchaeus' testimony included

more than words. His change of heart resulted in

a change of life, a change that the whole commu-

nity could experience as genuine. The Lord is al-

ways ready to make his home with us.

All Souls Day follows All Saints Day, and solemnly commemorates the faithful departed, i.e. those who die with

God's grace and friendship. Catholics believe that not all those who die in God's grace are immediately ready for the

Beatific vision, i.e. the reality and goodness of God and heaven, so they must be purified of "lesser faults," and the

temporal effects of sin. The Catholic Church calls this purification of the elect, "purgatory."

The Catholic teaching on Purgatory essentially requires belief in two realities: 1. that there will be a purification of

believers prior to entering heaven and 2. that the prayers and masses of the faithful in some way benefit those in the

state of purification.

As to the duration, place, and exact nature of this purification, the Church has no official dogma, although Saint

Augustine and others used fire as a way to explain the nature of the purification. Many faithful Catholics, including

Pope Benedict XVI, grant that Purgatory may be an existential state as opposed to a temporal place. In other words,

Purgatory may be something we experience instantaneously, because it is outside of the confines of created time and

space.

The Church prays for, and remembers, the faithful departed throughout the entire year. However, All Souls is the

general, solemn, day of commemoration, when the Church remembers, prays for, and offers requiem masses up for the

faithful departed in the state of purification. Typically Christians will take this day to offer prayers up on behalf of

their departed relatives and friends. Others may remember influential individuals that they never knew personally, such

as presidents, musicians, etc. This may be done in the form of the Office of the Dead (Defunctorum officium), i.e. a

prayer service offered in memory of departed loved ones. Often this office is prayed on the anniversary (or eve) of

the death of a loved one, or on All Souls' Day.
