DAVID LYNCH: THE FACTORY PHOTOGRAPHS

Acclamato autore di tanti, memorabili film di culto, David Lynch, nella sua mul-tiforme attività artistica, può vantare an-che spiccate qualità di fotografo. Lo at-testano i suggestivi scatti da lui realizzati nell’arco di trent’anni, viaggiando tra gli Stati Uniti e l’Europa e perlustrando siti industriali abbandonati o dismessi. Rigorosamente in bianco e nero, le sue immagini testimoniano il declino della civiltà industriale, così come l’abbiamo conosciuta nel XX secolo, illustrato nelle sue forme più emblematiche e affasci-nanti anche dal punto di vista architet-tonico. Questi santuari del taylorismo, monumentali vestigia di un’archeologia recente, fortezze austere e neogotiche irte di torri, tralicci e ciminiere, recano ancora le tracce di un’operosità mecca-nica declinata su larga scala, i segni e gli oggetti di una produttività incessante che si materializzava tra fuochi, fumi e scintille. Cupe e silenziose, avvolte da un’aura di mistero, abitate dai fantasmi del progresso, le fabbriche ritratte da Lynch sembrano location degne di una delle sue enigmatiche opere cinemato-grafiche. Oggi, ne possiamo vedere una suggestiva selezione di 111 scatti all’in-terno della mostra “David Lynch: The Factory Photographs”, curata da Petra Giloy-Hirtz e allestita alla MAST Gallery di Bologna. Alcuni dei primi cortome-traggi di David Lynch e una installazione sonora da lui concepita completano il quadro dell’esposizione. Nell’Audito-rium del MAST è inoltre possibile assi-stere alla proiezione del film “Industrial Symphony #1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted”. (F.M.)

Acclaimed author of several, memo-rable cult movies, David Lynch, in his manifold artistic activity, can be proud of strong photographic skills. This is guaranteed by evocative snapshots realized by him in thirty years, traveling across the USA and Europe and patrol-ling abandoned or dismissed industrial sites. Rigorously in black and white, his images witness the decline of the industrial civilization, as we knew it during the XX century, illustrated in its most emblematic and charming forms also from the architectural point of view. These sanctuaries of the Taylorism, monumental ruins of a recent archeology, austere and Gothic revival fortresses bristle with towers, frameworks and smokestack, provide traces of a hard-working mechanic on large scale, signs and objects of an incessant productivity which showed itself through fires, smokes and sparks. Gloomy and silent, wrapped up in a halo of mystery, inhabited by ghosts of development, the factories portrayed by Lynch seem to be worthy locations for his movies. We can now see an evocative selection of 111 snapshots inside the “David Lynch: The Factory Photographs” exhibition, curated by Petra Giloy-Hirtz and set-up at the MAST Gallery in Bologna. Some of the first short films by David Lynch and an audio installation conceived by the artist complete the exhibition. Inside the MAST Auditorium it is furthermore possible to see a projection of the movie “Industrial Symphony #1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted”. (F.M.)

TURNER COLOUR EXPERIMENTS

Insuperabile maestro della luce e del co-lore, autore di suggestive e vibranti visio-ni paesaggistiche pervase da un’energia pulviscolare che disintegra l’impeccabile nitore formale della rappresentazione classica, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) ha saputo comunicare alla pittura moderna un raffinato approccio sensoriale che sarà poi ulteriormente svi-luppato dagli impressionisti. Nell’ambito della grande mostra “The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free”, in corso di svolgimento alla Tate Britain di Londra, un artista contemporaneo, Olafur Elias-son, rende omaggio all’illustre predeces-sore, dedicandogli una serie di opere spe-rimentali presentate a cura di Elizabeth Jacklin e Lizy Carey-Thomas all’interno delle adiacenti Clore Galleries. “Olafur Eliasson: Turner colour experiments”, così si chiama l’esposizione, rappresenta un nuovo capitolo della ricerca avviata nel 2009 con la serie dei “Colour experiment paintings” e condotta dall’artista proprio sui temi della percezione della luce e del colore. “La maestria di Turner nel model-lare e strutturare la luce nei suoi quadri ha avuto un impatto significativo sul mio lavoro”, spiega Eliasson, e aggiunge: “Nei ‘Turner colour experiments’, ho volu-

In the context of the great “The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free”, now ongoing at the Tate Britain in London, Olafur Eliasson, a con-temporary artist, pays homage to the eminent predecessor, dedicating him a series of experimental works presented under the cure of Elizabeth Jacklin and Lizy Carey-Thomas inside the Clore Galleries. “Olafur Eliasson: Turner colour experiments”, this is the name of the exhibition, represents a new chapter of the research started in 2009 with the series of the “Colour experiment paintings” and managed by the artist on the topics of the perception of light and color. «The mastery of Turner in modeling and structuring light in his paintings has a significant impact on my work”, explains Eliasson, and adds: «In “Turner colour experiments”, I chose to insulate light and color of the works by Turner to highlight his sense of the ephemeral and to abstract it from those objects of desire which became his paintings. Il Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art di Porto, progettato da Alvaro Siza e inaugurato 15 anni fa, le dedica oggi un’importante retrospettiva curata da Suzanne Cotter e prodotta dalla Serral-ves Foundation. La mostra ha per tito-lo “Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian: Infinite Possibility. Mirror Works and Drawings 1974-2014” e presenta i suoi primi mosaici di specchi in rilievo, com-posti su gesso e legno, nonché una serie di opere plastiche di grandi dimensioni, sempre connotate dalla tecnica del mo-saico di specchi, esposte per la prima volta nel 1977 dalla gallerista france-se Denise René nei suoi spazi di Parigi e New York, fino alle ultime creazioni dell’artista – che nel frattempo ha fatto ritorno a Teheran – sviluppate a partire dal concetto di famiglie geometriche. Accanto alle sue celebri composizioni e sculture, la mostra offre l’opportunità di ammirarne per la prima volta anche i disegni e i bozzetti che ci consentono di comprendere la genesi delle sue opere. Alla vita e all’arte di Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian è dedicato un docu-mentario, diretto da Bahaman Kiarosta-mi e presentato in anteprima nell’ambito della retrospettiva. (F.M.)

For more than forty years, the Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanafar-maian develops her personal search through the creation of graphic and plastic works whose abstract geo-metries, characterized by repetitions and progressions, have origins in the architectural and decorative tradition of Islamic culture.The Serralves Museum of Contempora-ry Art in Porto, designed by Alvaro Siza and opened 15 years ago, dedicates her an important retrospective curated by Suzanne Cotter and produced by the Serralves Foundation. A PEOPLE’S PALACELente di ingrandimento sui progetti degli architetti Mecanoo che hanno il loro studio nei Paesi Bassi. La mo-stra ‘A People’s Palace‘ approfondisce i progetti degli ultimi tre decenni che mostrano un approccio fortemen-te multidisciplinare oltre che grande competenza tecnica e attenzione ai dettagli. Tra i tanti progetti la Bibliote-ca di Birmingham, nel Regno Unito, gli uffici comunali e la stazione ferroviaria di Delft, il Centro per le arti Wei-Wu-Ying a Kaohsiung (Taiwan) e il Munici-pio di Boston, USA. Il minimo comun denominatore di tutti questi progetti è il senso di interazione, di comunità e di trasparenza, tutti elementi che in-vitano i visitatori a rimanere incollati agli edifici sia all’interno che all’ester-no. Fondatore di Mecanoo e direttore creativo, Francine Houben, ritiene che gli edifici pubblici siano il cuore socia-le e culturale della società e afferma: “Gli edifici pubblici hanno bisogno di spazio pubblico e dovrebbero essere accoglienti per tutti.” La Biblioteca di Birmingham, una delle più grandi d’Europa, è un edificio sti-molante per persone di ogni età e pro-venienza, oltre 2,7 milioni di persone vi hanno fatto visita nel primo anno. Oggi è il luogo ideale per eventi della comu-nità, per studiare, per lavorare e per incontrare persone. Magnifying glass on projects of the ar-chitects Mecanoo who have their studio in the Netherlands. The exhibition ‘A People’s Palace’ analyzes the projects of the last three decades showing a strongly multidisciplinary approach and great technical competence and attention to details. Among the several projects the Birmingham Library, in the UK, the Commune offices and the Deft rail station, the Wei-Wu-Ying arts Center in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and the Boston Municipality, USA. The least common denominator of all these projects is the sense of interaction, community and transparency, all elements inviting visi-tors to glue their eyes both on the inside and on the outside.Founder of Mecanoo and creative direc-tor, Francin Houben, thinks that public buildings are the social and cultural he-art of our society and he asserts: “Public buildings need public space and should welcome everyone”.The Birmingham Library, one of the gre-atest in Europe, is a cozy and stimula-ting building for people of any age and from anywhere, more than 2,7 millions of people visited this place during the first year. Today it is the ideal place for

ALVAR AALTO SECOND NATUREIl Vitra Design Museum, in collaborazione con l’Alvar Aalto Museum, presenta “Al-var Aalto – Second Nature”, una grande retrospettiva sul leggendario architetto finlandese. La mostra rivela nuovi ed af-fascinanti aspetti della vita di Aalto vei-colando il legame della sua architettura organica con tanti artisti del suo tempo, come László Moholy-Nagy, Jean Arp, Ale-xander Calder o Fernand Léger. Le opere di questi ed altri artisti vengono messe a confronto con i progetti e le opere di Aalto a sottolineare, così, il suo significato come figura chiave di un’arte ed un’architettura d’avanguardia dagli anni ‘20. L’esposizio-ne presenta alcuni modelli architettonici storici, dei disegni originali, mobili, lam-pade ed oggetti di vetro, ma anche opere di altri artisti conosciuti come Alexander Calder o Jean Arp. L’esposizione compren-de gli edifici ed i progetti più importanti di Aalto, ma guida lo sguardo anche su progetti meno conosciuti. La mostra è accompagnata da un ampio catalogo di 688 pagine, con saggi di dieci autori, tra cui Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Akos Moravanszky ed il curatore del MoMA Pedro Gadanho; sono presenti interviste con Kenneth Frampton e Alvaro Siza, ed anche un approfondito elenco di opere, disegni originali ed illustrazioni mai pre-sentati prima d’ora. In aggiunta a questo, un ampio programma collaterale è dedi-cato al tema della mostra, e tra gli ospiti saranno presenti Shigeru Ban, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Front Design, Harri Koski-nen, Matthias Sauerbruch ed altri. The exhibition inclu-des the most important buildings and projects by Aalto, but it also brings the eye towards less known projects.The exhibition is pulled alongside a wide 688 pages catalog, with essays by ten authors, among who Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Akos Moravanszky and the curator of the MoMA Pedro Gadanho; interviews with Kenneth Frampton and Alvaro Siza, and also an analysis on a list of works, original drawings and illustrations that have never been presented before. Cosa sta succedendo in Africa dal punto di vista dell’architettura?La mostra AFRICA Big Change Big Chan-ce vuole rendere palesi le dinamiche delle grandi trasformazioni in corso in questo paese. Il cambiamento – Change – ri-guarda in particolare i fenomeni di con-centrazione urbana. Nel 2030 anche le regioni che oggi hanno il minor tasso di urbanizzazione saranno a maggioranza con una popolazione residente nella città. Nel 2030 la popolazione urbana dell’Afri-ca, 748 milioni, supererà la popolazione complessiva dell’Europa, 685 milioni. La possibilità – Chance – è impersonata dai protagonisti della scena dell’architettura in Africa dal dopoguerra, dal modernismo tropicale, ad oggi. Sono gli interpreti di una progettualità impegnata nella pro-posizione di una nuova modernità, il cui interesse travalica le ragioni specifiche, estetiche e tecniche, e fa riflettere attor-no a problemi più generali, di assetto complessivo delle città e delle modalità di intervento. La sfida che abbiamo da-vanti in Africa riguarda il controllo dei grandi numeri, di persone, di pressione dell’urbanizzazione, e la possibilità legata al controllo della grande dimensione, sia questa urbana sia territoriale. What is hap-pening in Africa from the architectural point of view?The AFRICA Big Change Big Chance exhibition wants to unveil the dynamics of the great ongoing transformations in this country. Change is mainly related to phenomena of urban concentration. In 2030 also the areas having now the lowest urbanization rate will have the majority of residents living in the city. In 2030 the urban population of Africa, 748 millions, will exceed the overall Eu-ropean population, 685 millions. Chan-ce is personified by the protagonists of

the architectural scene in Africa from the postwar, from tropical modernism, till nowadays. They are interprets of a design active in the proposition of a new modernity, whose interest goes beyond specific, aesthetic and technical reasons, and makes us reflect on more general problems of cities and ways of intervention. The challenge we have in Africa refers to the control of great numbers, of people, of pressure of ur-banization, and the chance connected to the control of great dimensions, both territorial and urban. The exhibition will develop through some sections focused on the ongoing urban development of Africa, with the presentation of resear-ches dealing with most relevant cases, Lagos, Mapunto, Nairobi, Cairo etc. The great territorial transformations will be illustrated with the related projects, of continental and global scale, dealing with the exploitation of waters, the energetic production, the interruption of desertification, with new infrastruc-tures and new actors playing in this scenery. Una nuova mostra verrà allestita quest’autunno a Venezia in occasione della Biennale di Architettura sul lavoro degli architetti tedeschi gmp; la prima, visitabile per tutto il periodo della Bien-nale, si trova a palazzo Bembo e illustra il tema delle moderne infrastrutture per il volo, attraverso gli esempi dei due aeroporti berlinesi (Too good. Two. Be true. Blueprints for the future: the ai-rports TXL and BER by the von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects). A palaz-zo Michiel saranno invece esposte foto storiche e contemporanee, films, dise-gni, modelli ed altri prodotti volti ad illustrare l’approccio di gmp architects verso gli edifici esistenti, o meglio, co-struiti su basi già esistenti. Una nuova mostra verrà allestita quest’autunno a Venezia in occasione della Biennale di Architettura sul lavoro degli architetti tedeschi gmp; la prima, visitabile per tutto il periodo della Bien-nale, si trova a palazzo Bembo e illustra il tema delle moderne infrastrutture per il volo, attraverso gli esempi dei due aeroporti berlinesi (Too good. Two. Be true. Blueprints for the future: the ai-rports TXL and BER by the von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects). A palaz-zo Michiel saranno invece esposte foto storiche e contemporanee, films, dise-gni, modelli ed altri prodotti volti ad illustrare l’approccio di gmp architects verso gli edifici esistenti, o meglio, co-struiti su basi già esistenti. This autumn, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) will stage their second exhibition in Venice as part of the 14th Architecture Biennale. The first one will be opened for the whole Biennale duration and is located at Pa-lazzo Brembo, illustrating the topic of modern infrastructures for flight, throu-gh the examples of two airports in Ber-lin (Too good. Electaarchitettura pubblica un volume dedicato agli architetti Fuensanta Nieto e Enrique Sobejano. Dopo essersi lau-reati all’Università di Madrid, nel 1985 Nieto e Sobejano hanno dato vita allo studio che porta il loro nome e in bre-ve tempo si sono fatti conoscere oltre i confini spagnoli tra i giovani archi-tetti più dotati e promettenti. Hanno realizzato i loro lavori più impegnativi e rappresentativi nel campo della mu-seografia, circostanza che ha fatto sì che Nieto e Sobejano si siano trovati a confrontarsi sia con il tema del re-cupero e del restauro di edifici storici, sia con nuove edificazioni, dando al contempo prove notevoli delle loro doti di allestitori di spazi espositivi. Con il restauro del Castillo de La Luz a Las Palmas (1999-2004), il Museo di Ma-dinat al – Zahra nei pressi di Cordoba (1999 – 2009), il Centro de Creación Contemporánea sempre a Cordoba (2005 – 2011) e il Museo San Telmo a San Sebastian (2005 – 2011), hanno arricchito progressivamente il loro curri-culum professionale di una serie di ope-

Si farebbero carte false per potersi se-dere ai banchi di università e ascoltare Achille Castiglioni. Assorbire la sua curiosità, farsi contagiare dal suo entu-siasmo nel comunicare e seguire il suo sguardo incapace di menzogna. Sfo-gliando le pagine del libro ‘La voce del Maestro. Achille Castiglioni’, di Eugenio Bettinelli cade l’occhio sui consigli per gli studenti: “Se non siete curiosi, lasciate perdere. Se non vi interessano gli altri, ciò che fanno e come agiscono, allora quello del designer non è un mestiere, per voi”. “La strada, il cinema, la tv: è li che si impara ad osservare criticamente i gesti ovvi, gli atteggiamenti conformisti, le forme scontate. Per scoprire che si può e si deve fare altro”.E lui, Achille, ci è sempre riuscito. Anche nell’attività meno nota di insegnante portata avanti per oltre 20 anni tra il 1969 e il 1993 dapprima alla Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Torino, poi alla Facoltà di Architettura del Poli-tecnico di Milano. Eugenio Bettinelli, per molti anni collaboratore di Castiglioni, approfondisce questo aspetto della sua attività, così poco esplorato dalla critica.Il volume presenta, tra gli altri contenuti che riguardano la sua attività didattica, i programmi e le esercitazioni che Casti-glioni proponeva ai suoi studenti, l’ap-parato bibliografico dei suoi corsi e il suo particolare approccio all’insegnamento. Browsing the pages of the book ‘La voce del Maestro. Achille Castiglioni, di Eugenio Bettinelli’, the interest goes to the advi-ces for students: “If you are not curious, forget about it. If you are not interested in others, what they do and how they behave, being a designer is not your work”. “Street cinema and television: it is there that you learn how to critically observe obvious gestures, conformist approaches, predictable shapes. To discover you can do and have to do something else”.And he, Achille, always succeeded in doing so. Also in the less known activity of teaching he has been continuing his work for 20 years between 1969 and 1993 at first at the Architecture Department of the Turin Politecnico, and then at the Archi-tecture Department of the Polictecnico in Milan. Eugenio Bettinelli, for many year cooperator of Castiglioni, deeply analyzes this aspect of his activity, which is less considered by critics.The volume presents, among other

contents regarding his didactic activity, the programs and exercises that Casti-glioni introduced to his students, the bibliographic system of his courses and his peculiar approach to teaching. But it mainly presents the transcript of his lessons which, published for the first time together with the original audio

files – that can be listened on a specific website -, allow to get closer to the teaching of Castiglioni with neither filters nor intermediations, only through his own voice. (F.R.)

After the decennial success in Europe, ARCHITECT@WORK arrives in Italy with a key word: innovation. Exhibitors are asked to only show inno-vative products. Companies send their technical specifics of everything they would like to exhibit and the committee made of architects and designers eva-luate each single product: when it has been marketed? In order to face the topic of sustainability, an exhi-bition curated by MATREC, organized by the publishing house Design Diffusion, is foreseen, offering a panoramic view of innovative and eco-friendly mate-rials.
