They found that iron repletion was achieved in 27 of 30 such patients with iron deficiency who were given IV iron dextran. * Dextran therapy also reduced the average epoetin-alfa dosage by 24 U/kglweek, a change which translated into an annual cost saving of around $US 1150/patient. Taking into account the cost of loading and maintenance with IV dextran ($US565/patient/year), the net saving associated with dextran therapy was calculated to be $US580/patient/year. * Patients received a 1 g loading dose in 5 divided doses. and then a 100 mglmonth maintenance dosage for 4 months.
