President’s Message

What wonderful quilts! I hope many of you had a chance to head over to the Jacksonville Quilt Fest a few weeks ago. The quilts on display were stunning, and I was happy to see so many familiar QU names on the tags. The vendors had a great selection of fabric, kits, notions and more. October Program

Don’t Dread the Dresden

The Dresden Plate quilt block has been around for many years and although considered a very classic and traditional block, it has made a comeback in recent years with bold colors and imaginative settings. While not considered an easy beginner block, some quilters have conquered it and others have cast it aside as too difficult. Wendy Stone will demonstrate an easy way to make the Dresden plate and share a variety of projects, both traditional and modern, that utilize this block and method. We all want to see your creations so please bring your Dresden Plate quilts to share at the end of the program.

Upcoming Programs

November - “Strut Your Stuff!”

A guild wide trunk show featuring bags, purses, totes, pouches and other quilty creations. We all have a great bag, purse or tote, especially the one of a kind type that we make with our beautiful quilt fabrics. Now is the time to come strut your stuff and show us your favorites. We also want to see your crafty creations such as sewing machine covers, thread catchers, organizers, etc. You may just walk away with some last-minute holiday gift ideas.

2019 ……

As we begin to wind down the programs for 2018, it is time for someone to begin planning programs for next year. This is not a difficult role to fill. Choose 8 program topics and ask individuals or groups to present. As Chair, you only need to introduce the presenter and help hold quilts if you do not wish to present a program yourself. I have a few ideas for program topics to help you get started. Contact Wendy Stone or Carol Eskola to volunteer for this really easy position or to offer to present a program next year.

“Friends are threads of the quilt of life.”

All of our members can count on their guild friends for help when they need advice on how to make the perfect quilt, but we also want to reach out when they need a little cheer or sympathy. If you become aware that someone needs a little sunshine, please contact me. I'll make sure they receive some sunbeams by way of a card from the guild.

Wanted: A Party Hostess for the QU End of Year Bash

QU will celebrate another wonderful year of quilting and camaraderie at our December guild meeting. We are looking for a volunteer or two to be the hostess(es) for the pot luck party. Tasks include reminding everyone to bring food/requirements, organizing the room before the party, simple decorations, etc.

If you are interested, please contact Kerry Cohen.

Block of the Month - November

Yes, National Pizza Month was October, but because we seem to be a month off this year, let’s celebrate NOW. This observance began in October 1984, and was created by Gerry Durnell, the publisher of Pizza Today magazine. Some people observe National pizza month by consuming various types of pizzas or pizza slices or going to various pizzerias. During the month, some pizzerias give away free pizzas or pizza slices to customers or offer reduced-price promotions. Some businesses run fundraising drives, donating proceeds of pizza sales to benefit various organizations or charities. Some pizzerias create unique pizzas that they don't routinely offer. For example, Mamma Mia! Pizza Kitchen in Levelland, Texas created a pizza prepared with rattlesnake meat in 2009 to celebrate the month. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Pizza_Month)

We’re going to celebrate pizza in fabric. Use your choice of a pieced 9-Patch (representing a deep dish pizza) or Fan pattern (representing thin crust pizza). Decorate with your favorite toppings (yoyo) pepperoni; round rings for onions; green/red/yellow pieces for peppers; use food fabrics, let your imagination go wild! All blocks should be 12 ½” unfinished. See the pattern download for color suggestions (before toppings…)

And since this is our last block for the year, this is a good opportunity to make some BOM’s you didn’t have time to do during the rest of the year. You CAN turn in all blocks, all months at the November meeting along with your Pizza creations.

Philanthropic Challenge

Are you up for our next Philanthropic Challenge? Fifty (yes 50) TMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Quilts!

The size range is anywhere from 15″ x 22″ to 17″ x 25″. Soothing colors are preferred, as stimulation needs to be kept at a minimum. The quilt fits on top of the sheet, with the baby placed on top of the quilt which explains why the size can vary. Quilt tops should be made of all cotton fabrics, including cotton flannels. Batting can be polyester or cotton; backing can also be polyester, like "Minky", or cotton fabrics. please use soft, soothing colors in our fabric choices.

Please machine quilt and bind them, keeping them free of other embellishment. Also, please put your name on a piece of paper and pin it to the quilt. We'd love to recognize each of you!

Under philanthropic projects on our website is a pattern for NICU Isolette covers. These needs have changed, requiring a more difficult pattern for the new isolettes; therefore, we are no longer making these as a group project. Thank you for your help in the past.

Contact: Shelley Woodyard.

*Hang Tough Foundation Needs Christmas/Winter Themed Lap Quilts, Pillow Cases and Books! QU has been asked to donate at least 10 lap (60” x 72”) size quilts, books, and pillowcase for the TMH Santa Day. Hang Tough Foundation will be visiting the TMH Pediatric floor to deliver these items to the kids (generally range in age from elementary school to high school) who are in the hospital over the holidays. Advised that last year’s quilts made from fabric with snowflakes, Rudolph, and Frosty were big hits! Nothing larger than a lap size and general Christmas/Winter theme fabrics (does not need to be gender specific). Books do not need to be Christmas/winter theme. Please bring items to the November QU meeting or contact Dawn Griffin to arrange for pickup. Items needed for delivery to children by no later than December 5th.

Don’t forget to save the UPC labels from packages of Hobbs batting. These will help with us obtaining discounted batting for guild philanthropic projects.

City Hall Show featuring Guild Member Deon Lewis

Persistence of Memory: Artworks by Deon Lewis, Charity Myers and Julie Guyot

Dates: On display from Oct. 25 - Nov. 19, 2018

Memory offers a vehicle for transcending the confines of time and space. In that way, it is not unlike the artmaking process where exploration is encouraged and boundaries are blurry. There is a direct relationship between memory and imagination and both are used to conjure mental images. In this exhibition, the works of artists Deon Lewis, Charity Myers and Julie Guyot make those visions concrete.

Deon Lewis’ work is comprised of fabric, fibers and thread that are collaged into unique compositions. Her most recent works deal with themes relating to personal reflection. “Each of the pieces on display represents a moment of quiet contemplation—a special memory captured in time, reflecting joy and sometimes uncomfortable vulnerabilities.”

In her mixed media paintings, Charity Myers explores the intersection of past and present. Her work contains a variety of historic and contemporary images that balance on the edge of recognition and abstraction. “I am interested in the bits and pieces of memories that flash in our dreams and recall a feeling without specifics or clarity. A single snapshot can imprint evidence in our minds of a moment even when our memory fails. The tricky part is—our minds are faulty, and photographs often tell only part of the story.”

Though recollections can be misty, these artists are making them tangible. These works illustrate that our memory shapes our identities as individuals and our ties to other people.

Meet these artists and enjoy refreshments at the opening reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

This is one of many exhibitions curated by COCA for the Art in Public Places program on behalf of the City of Tallahassee. For more information about this exhibition or upcoming exhibitions, visit tallahasseearts.org or contact Amanda Karioth Thompson at COCA, (850) 224-2500 or [email protected]

Last Chance to Buy Tickets at a Meeting

“Out of the Blue”

The winner of the Opportunity Quilt will be announced at the Museum of Florida History on Sunday, October 28, the last day of the show. You can buy tickets at the Museum through the 28th or at the October guild meeting.

Congratulations to Virginia Ponder, who won the drawing for three free tickets for the “Storm at Sea” Opportunity Quilt at the September guild meeting.

Tickets can be purchased during the social time at this guild meeting from 6:30 to 7:00. The donation is $2.00 each or 3 tickets for $5.00.

At the beginning of the meeting, there will be a drawing from the names of those who purchased 3 tickets for $5.00. The winning name will receive 3 free tickets. Put your name in the drawing for each set of 3 purchased!

Please see Marsha Walper for more information.

Opportunities Galore! Don't miss your chance to help make 2019 a memorable year for Quilters Unlimited! We still need volunteers to fill open committee positions, so please consider where your interests and skills might best be applied among the following committees. Take a look at more detailed information on the website (under Membership/Officers and Chairpersons). If something peaks your interest, let me know by email, phone call, in person at the next meeting, smoke signals, or carrier pigeon! Does something appeal to you, but involves one or two things that makes you hesitate? Let's see if there's a work-around that makes everything fit!

Welcoming Committee -- Assemble a crack group of rotating "greeters" to welcome guests and potential new members. You're not expected to give up your own "social time" every month! Have fun planning and hosting new member gatherings, and brainstorm with the membership about making our guild a warm, friendly place to be.

Workshops/Classes -- Many of these are already planned for 2019, but we need new ideas to fill in the gaps and to plan ahead for 2020 and beyond.

Programs -- What fun ideas do you have for our monthly programs? What have your friends mentioned that they'd like to see?

Challenge Quilt -- Get involved with the annual Museum show; what intriguing twist might you come up with that will inspire members to deliver their best Challenge Quilt yet?

Silent Auction -- Be a part of the Museum show's success by making sure that items for the silent auction are gathered, safely delivered to the museum for display, and ultimately delivered to their winners' homes.

Museum Show 2020 -- Work alongside Karen Kunz, our 2019 museum chair, to learn the ropes; put that knowledge to use when you chair the show in 2020.

Opportunities Galore! Continued 2020 Opportunity Quilt -- Gather a talented group to select the design and create the quilt that will be featured in our 2020 Museum show.

Philanthropy -- Help us identify opportunities in the community where we can help those in need of warm hugs (quilts!) and other items.

Awards -- In the latter part of the year, remind members to recognize outstanding quilters and volunteers, and then review nominations for selection of the winners.

Door Prizes -- What could be more fun that giving away free stuff?
