Official Nevada Day Program of Events 2014

  • This is big-time Nevada: youre turning 150, your Sesquicentennial congratulations! Born on October 31, 1864, you were the 36th state to join the United States of America. You were named Nevada after your majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range, which in Spanish means snow covered, although growing up

you did have several nicknames. The two most well known are The Battle Born State (since you were born during the Civil War), and The Silver State (because of your rich deposits of silver ore discovered in the Comstock Lode.) There are also your lesser-known nicknames: the Sagebrush State (or Sage State) due to your abundance of wild Sagebrush your offi cial state ower, and The Mining State, referencing one of your most important industries. You were even known as the Sage Hen State, from the true bird of the west, the Sage Hen or Sage Grouse, once very plentiful within your borders.

You are also one of only two states to signi cantly expand its borders after admission to the Union. In 1866, part of the western Utah Territory was added, and on January 18, 1867, you gained a portion of Pah-Ute County in the Arizona Territory, west of the Colorado River. That transfer was prompted by the discovery of gold in the area, and it was thought by offi cials that you would be better able to oversee the expected population boom, most of this area is now Clark County. And, be tting of your outlaw history and renegade spirit, something else that sets you apart is you are the only state where prostitution is legal. By 1900, you were by far the least populated state in the Union with just 40,000 residents less than half of the next least-populated state. That was destined to change in the 20th century with the establishment of legalized gambling, plus lenient marriage and divorce proceedings. These helped transform you into a major tourist destination. Recently you were branded as A World within. A State Apart. telling the rest of the planet that you truly o er a world of contrasts mountains and deserts; cities and small towns; mining and aerospace. Might I add open spaces, numerous outdoor activities, beautiful mountain lakes and streams, bluebird skies, and a population made up of many diverse cultures need I go on? I guess one of the things that I am personally most proud of is that the Nevada Day Parade active in Carson City since 1938 is among the oldest parade events of its kind in the nation, and one of only three states to have an ongoing admissions day celebration. I am also very proud to have called myself a Nevadan for over 40 years! Happy 150th Birthday Nevada!

  • As a long time community leader and volunteer, Kay Winters is the epitome of a true Nevadan. Not long after relocating to Carson City from Tacoma in 1941, Kay embarked on the rst of a long line of public service projects by rst collecting scrap for the World War II e ort and knitting khaki-colored hats, gloves, scarves and socks for the military. She recalls her early life in Carson City. We lived across from the Governors Mansion on one of the two paved streets in town. The other was Highway 50. Carson City had a population of 1,500, one theater, one grocery store/bakery, one meat market, two drug stores and numerous saloons. In those days folks called the Governor by his rst name and knew the Sheri and all the city offi cials, said Kay. In 1948, she met and married JohnD Winters, whose family played an instrumental role in developing Nevada, entering the region as pioneers along the Oregon Trail in 1848 and settling in Washoe Valley in 1852. The Winters family went on to shape Nevada history through involvement in mines, ranching and politics. The late JohnD Winters was also a Nevada Day Parade Grand Marshal in 1995. A mother of ve, Kay has been a leader in 4-H, Brownies, Girls Scouts (serving on the state council), Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. The Winters ranch home in Carson City hosted two scholars from the Rotary foreign exchange program and was a destination for American Field Services young people before they left the U.S. for their homes abroad. Kay also helped establish the Carson Comets Ski Program, which is still active today. Kay helped raise funds for Carson Citys rst hospital and helped establish the Carson Tahoe Womens Auxiliary, where she served as their rst

membership chairwoman and third President. The Auxiliary furnished the hospital rooms and established the Gray Ladies and Candy Stripers groups. Kay and JohnD moved to their Dayton ranch in 1965, where she served on Lyon Countys Park and Recreation Board for 10 years. During her tenure, she secured Our Park at the entrance to Dayton, obtained land through the BLM for a Little League baseball park near Dayton schools and

secured land through the State Legislature for a park with an

historic mill site along the Carson River. Because of Kays established reputation for public service, she was asked to join the Advisory Board for Arts and Science at UNR from 1980-1990, where she received the Universitys Presidents medal in 1987 and the Distinguished Nevadan award in 1989. Over the years, Kay and JohnD donated ranch land for Carson High School, Eagle Valley Golf Course West and Centennial Park. My life has been full, adds Kay. I had a wonderful husband for 59 years, and a ne family of 5 children, 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren. How blessed I am as I know each one of them well. Kay has lived in Carson City and Dayton for 73 years, nearly half of the states 150. Although she wasnt born here, Kay embodies the words of the state song, Home means Nevada.

Perhaps the most famous name associated with Nevada for the last 150 years is that of Mark Twain. The pseudonym was adopted by Samuel Clemens in 1863 when he was writing for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. Twains writing career began after spending time as a printer, riverboat pilot, and failing as a gold miner. He went on to become a world-famous author and lecturer. Although he passed from this worldly realm over 100 years ago in 1910, much of his wit and wisdom endures to this day.

We wondered what Twain would think of his adopted home 150 years after its statehood, so we went to an acknowledged expert on the subject, McAvoy Layne, who has been impersonating Twain for 26 years. Layne thought that Twain would no doubt be highly amused at todays goings-on, while remarking that many things havent changed much.

    Twain on Nevadas Hospitality

Of course, Nevada is a far more hospitable place than it was when Twain arrived 153 years ago. In a letter written in May of 1905 and reprinted in the Nevada State Journal, Twain recalled his arrival in Carson City: I remember, as if it were yesterday, that when I disembarked from the overland stage in front of the Ormsby in Carson City, in August, 1861, I was not expecting to be asked to come again. I was tired, discouraged, white with alkali dust and did not know anybody. But if he were to revisit the area today, he might very well change his mind about another comment he made: Some people are malicious enough to think that if the devil were set at liberty and told to con ne himself to Nevada Territory, he would...get homesick and go back to hell again.

    Twain on Politics

Twain was always critical of the politicians of his day, and would be no less so in 2014. He said, I dont vote for politicians, it only encourages them. Well, look at it, look how hard it is to nd a politician today with morals high enough that he will stay bought. He would undoubtedly be impressed by many of todays offi ce-holders, who actually do stay bought! Twain also made a comment that would apply to todays political ads: Get your facts rst, and then you can distort them as much as you please. However he would certainly be against the recurring proposal that our state legislature should meet annually. In fact, he said, No, the Nevada legislature meets every two years for sixty days, when they ought rightly meet every sixty years for two days. When the Nevada legislature is in session, nobody is safe. Layne, in his Twain persona, updated his famous alter ego on the major shift in politics in the Silver State, stating: No, now that I think of it, one thing has changed. Our legislators 150 years ago did their drinking, they did their gambling, they did their womanizing, yes. But they did it with the press! I know this because I was the press.

    Twain on Transportation and Technology

Politics aside, what would Mark Twain have thought of some of the advances in science and technology that we take in stride? Well, Twain was still around at the birth of the automobile, although there were far fewer of them on the roads then. But he seemed to like them, particularly Oldsmobiles. However, he eschewed driving. I do not own a motor-car but I recommend them to all my friends and advise them to buy a car--so that they will come around and take me out in it, he wrote in 1906, the same year he was photographed riding in an Oldsmobile piloted by racing driver Ernest Keeler. As for traffi c, if you read his

  • book Life on the Mississippi, you will nd that he was used to heavy riverboat traffi c, which was far more hazardous than todays freeways. Another major change that would probably sadden Twain is the shift in reading habits from newspapers and books to electronic media. However, he often expressed his approval of reading in general, saying The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cant read them. So he would probably endorse e-readers eventually.

Twains Witticism True Then and Now?

Twains commentary on the state of society and education in America is still as true today as it was 150 years ago. Here are a few of his witticisms that make his points:

Education: that which reveals to the wise, and conceals from the stupid, the vast limits of their knowledge.

In the rst place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then He made school boards.

A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain.

Patriot: the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about.

God created war so that Americans would learn geography.

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.

Honesty is the best policy - when there is money in it.

And nally, Mark Twain would be delighted to discover the proliferation of cigar bars in Carson City. As he once said, If there are no cigars in Heaven, I shall not go.

What Might Twain Say of Nevadas Sesquicentennial?

So if Twain were here for todays celebration of Nevadas 150 years of statehood, what might the Bard of the Comstock have to say? Let McAvoy Layne interpret his feelings for us, probably quite accurately: Im going to go have a drink to the Great State of Nevada on her 150th birthday. There are a thousand reasons why I shouldnt take a drink, but I cant think of one right now.

Nevada Day is a grand celebration commemorat-ing Nevadas Battle Born entry into the union as the 36th state on October 31, 1864. This years parade theme of Happy 150th Birthday Nevada! celebrates the states Sesquicentennial anniversary. The parade showcases Nevadas rich heritage of native communi-ties, mining, ranching and the pioneer spirit.

The Nevada Day parade in Carson City began in 1938 and is currently the largest and longest running admissions day celebration in the nation. In addition to the Parade, Nevada Day festivities have grown to include dozens of events celebrating the states past and present. Check out a complete schedule of events on pages 14-16.

When is the Real Nevada Day?This can sometimes be a tricky question to answer.

While Nevadas official birthday is October 31, with the passage of AB396 by the 1997 Nevada State Legisla-ture, Nevada voters advised they wanted to celebrate

Nevada Day on the last Friday in October. The legisla-ture, after a much heated debate, complied. Beginning with the year 2000, the official observation of the Ne-vada Day State holiday began taking place on the last Friday in October, with the Nevada Day Parade taking place on the Saturday immediately following. This year, with the state holiday falling on Nevadas true admission day, Friday, October 31, 2014, the Nevada Day Parade is on Saturday, November 1, 2014.

What to Expect on Parade DayOn parade morning, early risers can watch the

8:00am hot air balloon launch on Carson Street near the Carson Mall (weather permitting).

At 10:00am, the firing of a cannon and a flyover of military aircraft signal the start of the parade. The parade begins at the intersection of William and Carson Streets and makes its way down Carson Street to the delight of the thousands of enthusiastic parade viewers lining the sidewalks. Around three to four hours later the last parade entry arrives at the terminal point, the intersection of Stewart and Carson Streets. You can view a map of the parade route on page 13.

The leading parade units consist of local law enforcement and public officials. They are followed by floats, marching bands, horses, entertainers, youth groups, celebrity guests, and even Burning Man creations. Each year sees about 200 entries in the Nevada Day Parade. This is a record year, with over 230 entrants registered to be in the parade!

Locals and visitors are encouraged to arrive early with lounge chairs and blankets to stake their claim for a spot on the parade route along Carson Street. Food, drink, and souvenir vendors ply the route, and local businesses often feature food and beverage specials during the parade.
