description

This photograph by Jesús Manuel Mena Garza has been exhibited internationally. It captures three people relaxing under a tree. During the early 1970s, some Chicanas and Chicanos decided to appropriate a stretch of a land and reimagine it for their own purposes. This dusty section of San José, California’s Hellyer Park was perfect for parking and hanging out. The guy standing with the long-straight hair identifies as Chicano. At the bottom of his bell-bottomed pant leg is a patch with the phrase “Chicano Power.” The poster is 11x17 at 300dpi.
