All persons in the vehicle shouldfasten their seatbelts BEFORE thevehicle starts to move. Otherwise, the possibility of serious injurybecomes greater in the event of asudden stop or accident.

To obtain maximum protection inthe event of an accident, the driv-er and all passengers in the vehi-cle should always wear seatbeltswhen the vehicle is moving. TheSRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys-tem) airbag does not do away withthe need to fasten seatbelts. Incombination with the seatbelts, itoffers the best combined protec-tion in case of a serious accident. Not wearing a seatbelt increasesthe chance of severe injury ordeath in a crash even when the ve-hicle has the SRS airbag.

The SRS airbags deploy with con-siderable speed and force. Occu-pants who are out of proper posi-tion when the SRS airbag deployscould suffer very serious injuries.Because the SRS airbag needsenough space for deployment, the

driver should always sit uprightand well back in the seat as farfrom the steering wheel as practi-cal while still maintaining full ve-hicle control and the front passen-ger should move the seat as farback as possible and sit uprightand well back in the seat.

Carefully read the sections Child restraintsystems, *SRS airbag (SupplementalRestraint System airbag), and Seatbeltsin chapter 1 of this owners manual for in-structions and precautions concerning thechild restraint system, seatbelt systemand SRS airbag system.

    Engine exhaust gas (Carbonmonoxide)

    Drinking and driving

Drunken driving is one of the most fre-quent causes of accidents. Since alcoholaffects all people differently, you mayhave consumed too much alcohol to drivesafely even if the level of alcohol in yourblood is below the legal limit. The safestthing you can do is never drink and drive.

However if you have no choice but todrive, stop drinking and sober up com-pletely before getting behind the wheel.

Never inhale engine exhaust gas.Engine exhaust gas contains car-bon monoxide, a colorless and

odorless gas which is dangerous,or even lethal, if inhaled.

Always properly maintain the en-gine exhaust system to preventengine exhaust gas from enteringthe vehicle.

Never run the engine in a closedspace, such as a garage, except

for the brief time needed to drivethe vehicle in or out of it.

Avoid remaining in a parked vehi-cle for a lengthy time while the en-gine is running. If that is unavoid-able, then use the ventilation fanto force fresh air into the vehicle.

Always keep the front ventilatorinlet grille free from snow, leaves

or other obstructions to ensurethat the ventilation system alwaysworks properly.

If at any time you suspect that ex-haust fumes are entering the vehi-cle, have the problem checkedand corrected as soon as possi-ble. If you must drive under theseconditions, drive only with all win-dows fully open.

Keep the trunk lid or rear gateclosed while driving to prevent ex-haust gas from entering the vehi-cle.

Drinking and then driving is verydangerous. Alcohol in the blood-stream delays your reaction and im-

pairs your perception, judgment andattentiveness. If you drive afterdrinking even if you drink just a lit-tle it will increase the risk of beinginvolved in a serious or fatal acci-dent, injuring or killing yourself, your passengers and others. In ad-dition, if you are injured in the acci-dent, alcohol may increase the se-

verity of that injury. Please dont drink and drive.

    Drugs and driving

If you are taking any drugs, check withyour doctor or pharmacist or read the liter-ature that accompanies the medication to

determine if the drug you are taking canimpair your driving ability. Do not drive af-ter taking any medications that can makeyou drowsy or otherwise affect your abilityto safely operate a motor vehicle. If youhave a medical condition that requires youto take drugs, please consult with yourdoctor.

Never drive if you are under the influenceof any illicit mind-altering drugs. For yourown health and well-being, we urge younot to take illegal drugs in the first placeand to seek treatment if you are addictedto those drugs.

    Driving when tired or sleepy

Please do not continue to drive but in-stead find a safe place to rest if you aretired or sleepy. On long trips, you shouldmake periodic rest stops to refresh your-

self before continuing on your journey. When possible, you should share the driv-ing with others.

    Modification of your vehicle

    Car phone/cell phone anddriving

Driving with petsUnrestrained pets can interfere with yourdriving and distract your attention from

There are some drugs (over thecounter and prescription) that candelay your reaction time and impair

your perception, judgment and at-tentiveness. If you drive after takingthem, it may increase your, yourpassengers and other persons riskof being involved in a serious or fa-tal accident.

When you are tired or sleepy, yourreaction will be delayed and yourperception, judgment and attentive-

ness will be impaired. If you drivewhen tired or sleepy, your, your pas-sengers and other persons chanc-es of being involved in a serious ac-cident may increase.

Your vehicle should not be modi-fied. Modification could affect itsperformance, safety or durability,

and may even violate governmentalregulations. In addition, damage orperformance problems resultingfrom modification may not be cov-ered under warranties.

Do not use a car phone/cell phonewhile driving; it may distract your at-tention from driving and can lead toan accident. If you use a car phone/cell phone, pull off the road and parkin a safe place before using yourphone. In some States/Provinces,

only hands-free phones may legallybe used while driving.

driving. In a collision or sudden stop, unre-strained pets or cages can be thrownaround inside the vehicle and hurt you oryour passengers. Besides, the pets canbe hurt under these situations. It is also fortheir own safety that pets should be prop-erly restrained in your vehicle. Restrain apet with a special traveling harness whichcan be secured to the rear seat with aseatbelt or use a pet carrier which can besecured to the rear seat by routing a seat-belt through the carriers handle. Never re-strain pets or pet carriers in the front pas-sengers seat. For further information, consult your veterinarian, local animalprotection society or pet shop.

Tire pressuresCheck and, if necessary, adjust the pres-sure of each tire (including the spare) atleast once a month and before any long

    journey.

Check the tire pressure when the tires arecold. Use a pressure gauge to adjust the

tire pressures to the values shown on thetire placard.

Refer to the Tires and wheels section inchapter 11 for detailed information.

    California proposition 65warning

Driving at high speeds with exces-sively low tire pressures can causethe tires to deform severely and torapidly become hot. A sharp in-crease in temperature could cause

tread separation, and destruction ofthe tires. The resulting loss of vehi-cle control could lead to an acci-dent.

Engine exhaust, some of its constit-uents, and certain vehicle compo-nents contain or emit chemicalsknown to the State of California tocause cancer and birth defects orother reproductive harm. In addi-tion, certain fluids in vehicles andcertain components of product wear

contain or emit chemicals known tothe State of California to cause can-cer and birth defects or other repro-ductive harm.

1-2 Seat, seatbelt and SRS airbags

    Seat,seatbelt andSRS airbags

    Front seats

Never adjust the seat while driv-ing to avoid the possibility of lossof vehicle control and of personal

injury. Before adjusting the seat, make

sure the hands and feet of rearseat passengers are clear of theadjusting mechanism.

Seatbelts provide maximum re-straint when the occupant sitswell back and upright in the seat.To reduce the risk of sliding under

the seatbelt in a collision, thefront seatbacks should be alwaysused in the upright position whilethe vehicle is running. If the frontseatbacks are not used in the up-right position in a collision, therisk of sliding under the lap beltand of the lap belt sliding up overthe abdomen will increase, and

both can result in serious internalinjury or death.

The SRS airbags deploy with con-siderable speed and force. Occu-pants who are out of proper posi-tion when the SRS airbag deployscould suffer very serious injuries.Because the SRS airbag needsenough space for deployment, thedriver should always sit uprightand well back in the seat as farfrom the steering wheel as practi-cal while still maintaining full ve-hicle control and the front passen-ger should move the seat as farback as possible and sit uprightand well back in the seat.

    100082

Put children aged 12 and under inthe rear seat properly restrained atall times. The SRS airbag deployswith considerable speed and forceand can injure or even kill children, especially if they are 12 years of ageand under and are not restrained orimproperly restrained. Because chil-dren are lighter and weaker thanadults, their risk of being injuredfrom deployment is greater. Conse-quently, we strongly recommendthat ALL children (including those inchild seats and those that have out-grown child restraint devices) sit in

the REAR seat properly restrainedat all times in a child restraint deviceor in a seatbelt, whichever is appro-priate for the childs age, height andweight. Secure ALL types of childrestraint devices (including forwardfacing child seat) in the REAR seatsat all times.

NEVER INSTALL A REARWARDFACING CHILD SEAT IN THE FRONTSEAT. DOING SO RISKS SERIOUSINJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILDBY PLACING THE CHILDS HEADTOO CLOSE TO THE SRS AIRBAG.

    Reclining the seatback

Pull the reclining lever up and adjust theseatback to the desired position. Then re-

lease the lever and make sure the seat-back is securely locked into place. The seatback placed in a reclined positioncan spring back upward with force whenreleased. When operating the reclining le-ver to return the seatback, hold it lightly sothat it may be raised back gradually.

According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly re-strained in the rear seating posi-tions than in the front seating posi-tions. For instructions and precau-tions concerning child restraint sys-tems, see the Child restraint sys-tems section in this chapter.

To prevent the passenger from slid-

ing under the seatbelt in the event ofa collision, always put the seatbackin the upright position while the ve-hicle is in motion. Also, do not placeobjects such as cushions betweenthe passenger and the seatback. Ifyou do so, the risk of sliding underthe lap belt and of the lap belt slidingup over the abdomen will increase, and both can result in serious inter-nal injury or death.

To lower it, push the head restraint downwhile pressing the release button on thetop of the seatback. The head restraint should be adjusted sothat the center of the head restraint is clos-est to the top of the occupants ears.

    Active head restraint (ifequipped)

The front seats of your vehicle are

equipped with active head restraints. Theyautomatically tilt forward slightly in theevent the vehicle is struck from the rear, decreasing the amount of rearward headmovement and thus reducing the risk ofwhiplash. For maximum effectiveness thehead restraint should be adjusted so thatthe center of the head restraint is closestto the top of the occupants ears.

    100096

All persons in the vehicle shouldfasten their seatbelts BEFORE the

vehicle starts to move. Otherwise, the possibility of serious injurybecomes greater in the event of asudden stop or accident.

All belts should fit snugly in orderto provide full restraint. Loose fit-ting belts are not as effective inpreventing or reducing injury.

Each seatbelt is designed to sup-port only one person. Never use asingle belt for two or more per-sons even children. Otherwise,in an accident, serious injury ordeath could result.

Replace all seatbelt assembliesincluding retractors and attachinghardware worn by occupants of a

vehicle that has been in a seriousaccident. The entire assemblyshould be replaced even if dam-age is not obvious.

When the ignitionswitch is turned ON next time, howev-er, the complete sequence of the warn-ing operation resumes. For further de-

tails about canceling the warning oper-ation, please contact your SUBARUdealer.

    Fastening the seatbelt

Never use a belt that is twisted orreversed. In an accident, this canincrease the risk or severity of in-

    jury.

Keep the lap belt as low as possi-ble on your hips. In a collision, this spreads the force of the lapbelt over stronger hip bones in-stead of across the weaker abdo-men.

Seatbelts provide maximum re-straint when the occupant sits

well back and upright in the seat.To reduce the risk of sliding underthe seatbelt in a collision, thefront seatbacks should be alwaysused in the upright position whilethe vehicle is running. If the frontseatbacks are not used in the up-right position in a collision, therisk of sliding under the lap beltand of the lap belt sliding up overthe abdomen will increase, andboth can result in serious internalinjury or death.

Do not put cushions or any othermaterials between occupants andseatbacks or seat cushions. If youdo so, the risk of sliding under thelap belt and of the lap belt slidingup over the abdomen will in-crease, and both can result in se-rious internal injury or death.

Never place the shoulder belt underthe arm or behind the back. If an ac-

cident occurs, this can increase therisk or severity of injury.

Inspect the seatbelts and attachments in-cluding the webbing and all hardware pe-

riodically for cracks, cuts, gashes, tears, damage, loose bolts or worn areas. Re-place the seatbelts even if only minordamage is found.

    100118

    100289

Do not allow the retractor to rollup the seatbelt too quickly. Other-wise, the metal tongue plates mayhit against the trim, resulting indamaged trim.

Have the seatbelt fully rolled upso that the tongue plates are neat-ly stored. A hanging tongue platecan swing and hit against the trimduring driving, causing damage tothe trim.

    100290

Keep the belts free of polishes, oils, chemicals and particularly

battery acid. Never attempt to make modifica-

tions or changes that will preventthe seatbelt from operating prop-erly.

    1Seatbelt extender

If the front seatbelts are not long enoughto permit the tongue plate to engage withthe seatbelt buckle, an optional seatbeltextender is available from your SUBARUdealer. When ordering an extender, onlyorder one particularly designed for your

vehicle. Several different types of extend-ers are available to match various variet-ies of front seatbelt designs. See yourSUBARU dealer for assistance.

The extender adds approximately 8 inch-es (200 mm) of length and it can be usedfor either the driver or front passengerseating position.

For the safety of others, the extendershould be removed after each use, espe-cially if the next person using the seatbeltdoes not need one.Note that leaving the seatbelt extenderstongue plate engaged with the seatbeltbuckle may prevent the Subaru advancedfront airbag system from functioning cor-rectly or cause the system to fail.

NOTEWhen the seatbelt extender is used by

a pregnant passenger, consult a doctorto get approval in advance.

To connect the extender to the seatbelt, insert the tongue plate into the seatbeltbuckle so that the PRESS signs on thebuckle-release buttons of the extenderand the seatbelt are both facing outwardas shown in the diagram. You will hear aclick when the tongue plate locks into thebuckle.

When releasing the seatbelt, press on thebuckle-release button on the extender, not

on the seatbelt. This helps to preventdamage to the vehicle interior and extend-er itself.

Be sure to observe the followingwhen using the seatbelt extender.

Failure to follow these instructionsand warnings could reduce the ef-fectiveness of the seatbelt and re-sult in more serious injury in theevent of a collision.

Never use the extender when thebelt itself is long enough to permitit to be buckled properly. If remov-al of heavy clothing is all that isneeded to permit the seatbelt tobe buckled properly, remove theheavy clothing and do not use theextender.

Do not use the extender if thebuckle of the extender rests overthe abdomen.

Do not let someone else use theextender. Use of an extenderwhen it is not needed could re-duce the effectiveness of the seat-belt and result in more serious in-

jury in the event of a collision.

Use the extender only for the frontseatbelts and only for the modelfor which it was originally provid-

ed. Never use the extender for therear seatbelts or for a differentmodel.

When discarding a seatbelt retrac-tor assembly or scrapping the en-tire vehicle damaged by a colli-sion, consult your SUBARU deal-

    er. Tampering with or disconnecting

the systems wiring could result inaccidental activation of the seat-belt pretensioner and/or SRS air-bag or could make the system in-operative, which may result in se-rious injury. The wiring harnessesof the seatbelt pretensioner and

SRS airbag systems are coveredwith yellow insulation and theconnectors of the system are yel-low for easy identification. Do notuse electrical test equipment onany circuit related to the seatbeltpretensioner and SRS airbag sys-tems. For required servicing ofthe seatbelt pretensioner, see

    your nearest SUBARU dealer.

The front sub sensors are located inboth front fenders and the SRS air-bag control module including theimpact sensors is located under thecenter console. If you need serviceor repair in those areas or near the

front seatbelt retractors, we recom-mend that you have an authorizedSUBARU dealer perform the work.

Do not perform any of the followingmodifications. Such modificationscan interfere with proper operationof the seatbelt pretensioners.

    Child restraint systems

Infants and small children should alwaysbe placed in an infant or child restraint

system in the rear seat while riding in thevehicle. You should use an infant or childrestraint system that meets Federal MotorVehicle Safety Standards or Canada Mo-tor Vehicle Safety Standards, is compati-ble with your vehicle and is appropriate forthe childs age and size. All child restraintsystems are designed to be secured in ve-hicle seats by lap belts or the lap belt por-

tion of a lap/shoulder belt (except thosecovered under the section in this manual, entitled Installation of child restraint sys-tems by use of lower and tether anchorag-es (LATCH)).

Children could be endangered in an acci-dent if their child restraints are not proper-ly secured in the vehicle. When installingthe child restraint system, carefully followthe manufacturers instructions.

According to accident statistics, childrenare safer when properly restrained in therear seating positions than in the front

    seating positions.

All U.S. states and Canadian provincesrequire that infants and small children berestrained in an approved child restraintsystem at all times while the vehicle ismoving.100688

    100125

Never let a passenger hold a childon his or her lap or in his or her armswhile the vehicle is moving. Thepassenger cannot protect the childfrom injury in a collision, becausethe child will be caught between the

    passenger and objects inside thevehicle.

Additionally, holding a child in yourlap or arms in the front seat exposesthat child to another serious danger.Since the SRS airbag deploys withconsiderable speed and force, thechild could be injured or even killed.

Where to place a child re-straint system

The following are SUBARUs recommen-dations on where to place a child restraintsystem in your vehicle.

A: Front passengers seatYou should not install a child restraint sys-tem (including a booster seat) due to thehazard to children posed by the passen-

gers airbag.B: Rear seat, window-side seating po-sitionsRecommended positions for all types ofchild restraint systems. In these positions, Automatic/EmergencyLocking Retractor (A/ELR) seatbelts andlower anchorages (bars) are provided forinstalling a child restraint system. Some types of child restraints might notbe able to be secured firmly due to projec-tion of the seat cushion. In this seating position, you should useonly a child restraint system that has a

bottom base that fits snugly against thecontours of the seat cushion and can besecurely retained using the seatbelt.

C: Rear seat, center seating positionInstalling a child restraint system is notrecommended, although the A/ELR seat-belt and an upper anchorage (tether an-chorage) are provided in this position.

Some types of child restraints might notbe able to be secured firmly due to projec-tion of the seat cushion. In this seating position, you should useonly a child restraint system that has abottom base that fits snugly against thecontours of the seat cushion and can besecurely retained using the seatbelt. If it is unavoidable to install a child re-

straint system in the rear seats centerseating position, lower the center head re-straint to the lowest position and install thechild restraint system by correctly passingthe rear center seatbelt through the beltguide.

Children should be properly re-strained at all times. Never allow achild to stand up, or to kneel on anyseat. Unrestrained children will bethrown forward during sudden stopor in an accident and can be injured

seriously.Additionally, children standing upor kneeling on or in front of the frontseat are exposed another seriousdanger. Since the SRS airbag de-ploys with considerable speed andforce, the child could be injured oreven killed.

    4. To remove the booster seat, press therelease button on the seatbelt buckle andallow the belt to retract.

Installation of child restraintsystems by use of lower andtether anchorages (LATCH)

Never use a belt that is twisted orreversed. In an accident, this canincrease the risk or severity of in-

    jury to the child.

    100142

Never place the shoulder belt un-der the childs arm or behind thechilds back. If an accident oc-curs, this can increase the risk orseverity of injury to the child.

The seatbelt should fit snugly inorder to provide full restraint.Loose fitting belts are not as ef-

    fective in preventing or reducinginjury.

Place the lap belt as low as possi-ble on the childs hips. A high-po-sitioned lap belt will increase therisk of sliding under the lap beltand of the lap belt sliding up overthe abdomen, and both can resultin serious internal injury or death.

Make sure the shoulder belt is po-sitioned across the center ofchilds shoulder. Placing theshoulder belt over the neck mayresult in neck injury during sud-den braking or in a collision.

Child restraint systems and seat-belts can become hot in a vehicle

that has been closed up in sunnyweather; they could burn a smallchild. Check the child restraintsystem before you place a child init.

Do not leave an unsecured childrestraint system in your vehicle.Unsecured child restraint sys-tems can be thrown around inside

of the vehicle in a sudden stop, turn or accident; they can strikeand injure vehicle occupants aswell as result in serious injuries ordeath to the child.

Your vehicle is equipped with four loweranchorages (bars) and three upper an-chorages (tether anchorages) for accom-modating such child restraint systems.

The lower anchorages (bars) are used forinstalling a child restraint system only onthe rear seat window-side seating posi-tions. For each window-side seating posi-tion, two lower anchorages are provided. Each lower anchorage is located where

the seat cushion meets the seatback.

The tether anchorages (upper anchorag-es) are provided for all the seating posi-tions (middle and both window-side ones)of the rear seat.

You will find marks at the bottom ofthe rear seat seatbacks. These marks in-

When you install a child restraintsystem, follow the manufacturersinstructions supplied with it. Afterinstalling the child restraint system, check to ensure that it is held se-curely in position. If it is not held

1-36 Seat, seatbelt and SRS airbags

The system also controls front seatbeltpretensioners. For operation instructionsand precautions concerning the seatbeltpretensioner, see the Front seatbelt pre-tensioners section in this chapter.

    To obtain maximum protection in

the event of an accident, the driv-er and all passengers in the vehi-cle should always wear seatbeltswhen the vehicle is moving. TheSRS airbag is designed only as asupplement to the primary protec-tion provided by the seatbelt. Itdoes not do away with the need tofasten seatbelts. In combination

with the seatbelts, it offers thebest combined protection in caseof a serious accident.

Not wearing a seatbelt increasesthe chance of severe injury ordeath in a crash even when the ve-hicle has the SRS airbag.

    For instructions and precautions

concerning the seatbelt system, see the Seatbelts section in thischapter.

Do not sit or lean unnecessarilyclose to the SRS airbag. Becausethe SRS airbag deploys with con-siderable speed faster than theblink of an eye and force to pro-tect in high speed collisions, theforce of an airbag can injure anoccupant whose body is too close

to SRS airbag. It is also important to wear yourseatbelt to help avoid injuries thatcan result when the SRS airbagcontacts an occupant not in prop-er position such as one thrownforward during pre-accident brak-ing.

    Even when properly positioned,

there remains a possibility that anoccupant may suffer minor injurysuch as abrasions and bruises tothe face or arms because of theSRS airbag deployment force.

The SRS airbags deploy with con-siderable speed and force. Occu-pants who are out of proper posi-tion when the SRS airbag deployscould suffer very serious injuries.Because the SRS airbag needsenough space for deployment, thedriver should always sit upright

and well back in the seat as farfrom the steering wheel as practi-cal while still maintaining full ve-hicle control and the front passen-ger should move the seat as farback as possible and sit uprightand well back in the seat.

Do not place any objects over ornear the SRS airbag cover or be-

tween you and the SRS airbag. Ifthe SRS airbag deploys, those ob-

jects could interfere with its prop-er operation and could be pro-pelled inside the vehicle andcause injury.

NOTEWhen you sell your vehicle, we urge

you to explain to the buyer that it isequipped with SRS airbags by alertinghim or her to the applicable section inthis owners manual.

Put children aged 12 and under inthe rear seat properly restrained

at all times. The SRS airbag de-ploys with considerable speedand force and can injure or evenkill children, especially if they are12 years of age and under and arenot restrained or improperly re-strained. Because children arelighter and weaker than adults, their risk of being injured from de-

    ployment is greater.

    100082

For that reason, we strongly rec-ommend that ALL children (in-cluding those in child seats andthose that have outgrown child re-straint devices) sit in the REARseat properly restrained at alltimes in a child restraint device orin a seatbelt, whichever is appro-

priate for the childs age, heightand weight.

Secure ALL types of child re-straint devices (including forwardfacing child seats) in the REARseats at all times.

According to accident statistics, children are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seating posi-

tions than in the front seating po-sitions.

For instructions and precautionsconcerning the child restraint sys-tem, see the Child restraint sys-tems section in this chapter.

NEVER INSTALL A REARWARDFACING CHILD SEAT IN THE

FRONT SEAT. DOING SO RISKSSERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TOTHE CHILD BY PLACING THECHILDS HEAD TOO CLOSE TOTHE SRS AIRBAG.

Never allow a child to stand up, orto kneel on the front passengersseat, or never hold a child on yourlap or in your arms. The SRS air-bag deploys with considerableforce and can injure or even killthe child.

When the SRS airbag deploys, some smoke will be released. Thissmoke could cause breathingproblems for people with a historyof asthma or other breathing trou-ble. If you or your passengershave breathing problems afterSRS airbag deploys, get fresh airpromptly.

A deploying SRS airbag releaseshot gas. Occupants could getburned if they come into directcontact with the hot gas.

    Subaru advanced frontal air-bag system

Your vehicle is equipped with a Subaruadvanced frontal airbag system that com-plies with the new advanced frontal airbagrequirements in the amended Federal Mo-tor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No.208.

The Subaru advanced frontal airbag sys-tem automatically determines the deploy-ment force of the drivers SRS frontal air-bag at the time of deployment as well aswhether or not to activate the front pas-sengers SRS frontal airbag and, if activat-ed, the deployment force of the SRS fron-tal airbag at the time of deployment.Your vehicle has warning labels on the

drivers and front passengers sun visorsbeginning with the phrase EVEN WITHADVANCED AIR BAGS and a tag at-tached to the glove box lid beginning withthe phrase Even with Advanced AirBags. Make sure that you carefully readthe instructions on the warning labels andtag.Always wear your seatbelt. The subaru

advanced frontal airbag system is a sup-plemental restraint system and must beused in combination with a seatbelt. Alloccupants should wear a seatbelt or beseated in an appropriate child restraintsystem.

The drivers SRS frontal airbag is stowedin the center portion of the steering wheel. The front passengers SRS frontal airbagis stowed near the top of the dashboardunder an SRS AIRBAG mark.

In a moderate to severe frontal collision, the drivers and front passengers SRSfrontal airbags deploy and supplement the

seatbelts by reducing the impact on thedrivers and front passengers head andchest.

NEVER INSTALL A REARWARDFACING CHILD SEAT IN THE FRONTSEAT. DOING SO RISKS SERIOUSINJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILDBY PLACING THE CHILDS HEADTOO CLOSE TO THE SRS AIRBAG.

Never allow a child to stand up, or tokneel on the front passengers seat.

The SRS airbag deploys with con-siderable force and can injure oreven kill the child.

Never hold a child on your lap or inyour arms. The SRS airbag deploys

with considerable force and can in-jure or even kill the child.

    100125

The SRS airbag deploys with con-siderable speed and force. Occu-

pants who are out of proper positionwhen the SRS airbag deploys couldsuffer very serious injuries. Be-cause the SRS airbag needs enoughspace for deployment, the drivershould always sit upright and wellback in the seat as far from thesteering wheel as practical whilestill maintaining full vehicle control

and the front passenger shouldmove the seat as far back as possi-ble and sit upright and well back inthe seat.

    100155

It is also important to wear yourseatbelt to help avoid injuries thatcan result when the SRS airbag con-tacts an occupant not in proper po-sition such as one thrown towardthe front of the vehicle during pre-accident braking.

Do not put any objects over thesteering wheel pad and dashboard. If the SRS frontal airbag deploys,

those objects could interfere with itsproper operation and could be pro-pelled inside the vehicle and causeinjury.

Do not apply any strong impact to thefront passengers seat such as by kicking. Do not spill liquid on the front passen-gers seat. If liquid is spilled, wipe it off im-mediately. Do not disassemble the front passen-gers seat. Do not install any accessory (such asan audio amplifier) other than a genuine

SUBARU accessory under the front pas-sengers seat. Do not place anything (shoes, umbrella, etc.) under the front passengers seat. The front passengers seat must not beused with the head restraint removed. Do not leave any article including a childrestraint system on the front passengersseat or the seatbelt tongue and buckle en-

gaged when you leave your vehicle. Do not place a magnet near the seatbeltbuckle and the seatbelt retractor. Do not use front seats with their back-ward-forward position and seatback notbeing locked into place securely. If any ofthem are not locked securely, adjust themagain. For adjusting procedure, refer tothe Front seats section in this chapter.

If you use an optional seatbelt extender, remove it after each use. (Refer to theSeatbelt extender section in this chap-ter.)

If the seatbelt buckle switch and/or front

passengers occupant detection systemhave failed, the SRS airbag system warn-ing light will illuminate. Have the systeminspected by your SUBARU dealer imme-diately if the SRS airbag system warninglight comes on.If your vehicle has sustained impact, thismay affect the proper function of theSubaru advanced frontal airbag system.

Have your vehicle inspected at yourSUBARU dealer.

NOTEThe front passengers SRS side airbagand seatbelt pretensioner are not con-trolled by the Subaru advanced frontalairbag system.

The SRS airbag can function only whenthe ignition switch is in the ON position. The Subaru advanced frontal airbag sys-tem is designed to determine the activa-tion or deactivation condition of the frontpassengers SRS frontal airbag depend-ing on the total load on the front passen-gers seat monitored by the front passen-gers occupant detection system weight

sensor. For this reason, only the driversSRS frontal airbag may deploy in theevent of a collision, but this does not meanfailure of the system.

If the front sub sensors inside both frontfenders and the impact sensors in the air-bag control module detect a predeter-mined amount of force during a frontal col-

lision, the control module sends signals tothe airbag module(s) (only drivers moduleor both drivers and front passengersmodules) instructing the module(s) to in-flate the SRS frontal airbag(s). The driv-ers and front passengers SRS frontal air-bags use dual stage inflators. The two in-flators of each airbag are triggered eithersequentially or simultaneously, dependingon the severity of impact, backward-for-ward adjustment of the drivers seat posi-tion and fastening/unfastening of the seat-belt in the case of the drivers SRS frontalairbag and depending on the severity ofimpact and the total load on the seat in the

might not necessarily require deploymentof drivers/drivers and front passengersSRS frontal airbag(s). If the vehicle strikesan object, such as a telephone pole orsign pole, or if it slides under a trucks loadbed, or if it sustains an oblique offset fron-tal impact, the drivers/drivers and frontpassengers SRS frontal airbag(s) maynot deploy depending on the level of acci-

    dent forces involved.

Examples of the types of accidentsin which the drivers/drivers andfront passengers SRS frontal air-bag(s) will basically not deploy.

The drivers and front passengers SRSfrontal airbags are designed basically not

to deploy if the vehicle is struck from theside or from behind, or if it rolls onto itsside or roof, or if it is involved in a low-speed frontal collision.

    1) First impact

    2) Second impact

In an accident where the vehicle is impact-ed more than once, the drivers and/orfront passengers SRS frontal airbag(s)will deploy only once on the first impact.

Example: In the case of a double collision, first with another vehicle, then against aconcrete wall in immediate succession,

once either or both of the drivers and frontpassengers SRS frontal airbags is/are ac-tivated on the first impact, it/they will notbe activated on the second impact.

SRS side airbagThe SRS side airbag is stored in the doorside of each front seat seatback, whichbears an SRS AIRBAG label. In a moderate to severe side impact colli-sion, the SRS side airbag on the impactedside of the vehicle deploys between theoccupant and the door panel and supple-ments the seatbelt by reducing the impacton the occupants chest and head.

The SRS side airbag is designed asonly a supplement to the primaryprotection provided by the seatbelt. They do not do away with the needto fasten seatbelts. It is also impor-

tant to wear your seatbelt to helpavoid injuries that can result whenan occupant is not seated in a prop-er upright position.

Do not sit or lean unnecessarilyclose to either front door. The SRSside airbag is stored in both frontseat seatbacks next to the door, andit provides protection by deployingrapidly (faster than the blink of aneye) in the event of a side impactcollision. However, the force of SRSside airbag deployment may causeinjuries if your head or other parts ofthe body are too close to the SRSside airbag.

    100164

Do not rest your arm on either frontdoor or its internal trim. It could beinjured in the event of SRS side air-bag deployment.

Never allow a child to kneel on thefront passengers seat facing theside window or to wrap his/her armsaround the front seat seatback. Inthe event of an accident, the force ofthe SRS side airbag deploymentcould injure the child seriously be-

cause his/her head or arms or otherparts of the body are too close to theSRS side airbag. Since your vehicleis also equipped with a passengersSRS frontal airbag, children aged 12and under should be placed in therear seat anyway and should beproperly restrained at all times.

    100623

Do not attach accessories to thedoor trim or near either SRS side air-bags and do not place objects nearthe SRS side airbags. In the event ofthe SRS side airbag deployment, they could be propelled dangerous-ly toward the vehicles occupants

    and cause injuries.
