    A SU HIJO GEORGE

    (24 DE ABRIL DE 1879)

    April 24 1879

    My Dear George

Having just read your letter to your sister Marianne, I havesummoned up courage enough to commence a letter to you,my concience being at length unable to bear its accusationany longer for not doing so before but, as we read, love coversa multitude of sins. I hope and believe you will have enough tocover mine in this respect. I can assure you it is not out ofsight out of mind, for I can say with an unwavering tongue, it ismany years since I failed to remember you daily in my prayers

and I have faith to believe they are more affectionate thananything I could say in letters on wordly subjects which I haveno doubt your brothers and sisters have written from time totime, and which I feel from infirmities that old age being unequalto. As regards my health I feel I have, considering my age(77), very much to be thankful for, in fact as far as concernsmyself individually there is nothing temporally or spiritually butpeace, and that is more than I find many can say in truth.

Carta del 24 de abril de 1879 de GeorgeSherwood Hudson a su hijo (continuacin)

Carta del 24 de abril de 1879 de GeorgeSherwood Hudson a su hijo George(continuacin).

I can assure you I can enter very deeply into your feelings the loss of your dear wife (and was very much pleased at tfeelings she expressed towards me in a letter she wrote to msome short time after she arrived out to Santiago, in whishe convinced me she had come to the conclusion that thGovernor was not always wrong) her removal must inde

    have altered your surroundings in a way you could little imagne and I hope it will more plainly convince you how transitoare all things this side the grave and draw your thoughts things eternal, not in the half and half way so generapractised, but in earnest. You will need the more and more you get older, and you cannot plead that you have been withosome (however little) instruction from your youth to the preseon its importance, and if any thing will make you do so it visitations of the kind you are now undergoing. It will make yfeel more than ever that resposability of a parent, which very great, especially young as yours are, and so far from your relations. You have very much to be thankful for in beinin the receipt of a good salary. I trust your health may remagood, and that you will retain it many years. Things are vevery bad I think in England;

everybody is complaining, and any one once thrown out ofsituation especially at your age, are shunted for the remaindof their lives and the best thing I can recommend you to dnow is to live as economically as possible, and bring up yochildren in inexpensive habits and put by as much as possibevery year, you will find by so doing your mind will be morerest as you become more independent of the world. This leame to inform you what you have to expect at my deasupposing nothing unforseen happens since then. Namely mpresent will run thus:

Carta del 24 de abril de 1879 de George Sherwood Hudson a su hijo George(continuacin).

The Vicarage Freehold left to Charles and Marianne Blackmurwith a rent charge of two hundred and ten pounds out of it tobe paid yearly to my Excecutors Charles Hudson, W.B.Blackmur and Van Pococke, forming a fund with BritishEquitable Shares dividends now 6090 per annum, UnitedStates Mortgage Bonds dividends now 6000 per annumless income tax, West Kent Building Society a loan of 700paying 35 per annum and Merchant Shipping shares payingno dividends for the last 3 years but these are paid up sharesand may, if business in shipping gets better, pay a dividend. You will find if you add the above mentioned sums togetherthey amount to 385.0.0 per annum less about 17 I haedirected the excecutors to pay the British Equitable out of it(during your life) to keep up you life Policy leaving a trifle shortof 375 per annum to be divided during your joint lives namelyyours, Williams and Lydias as follows:

Lydia 4 tenths about 150 per annum

William 3 tenths about 112.10.0 do

and yourself 3 tenths 112.10.0 do

    375.00.0

You will see by this rough sketch you will receive at my deathabout 112100 per annum during your life, and from thearrangement in my will your children will receive that sum duefrom British Equitable say with bonuses added 600 and 200 besides from excecutors as per my will to be equally dividedbetween them at your death. You will, I think by this, see theoutline of my will as it now stands and I hope you will feel thatI have been just as far as I know under the variouscircumstances of you all, and that the above will be a sort of

nest egg for you to increase so that you may be able yeabefore you are as I am or, before you die, to live without buness and if so disposed return to your native country. I doexpect I shall live to see that accomplished, but others maand you may finish your days no worse than your old fathwho would be glad to see you once more, but that is quite oof the question and must not be allowed to disturb you in yopresent position, but sit down where you are and make frienfor yourself and children after you are gone.

I was glad to find the box I sent you arrived out in gooconditions. I dare say you were surprised at its content buwill explain: for some time before I sent it my health had bevery bad and I thought I should not be long in this world, aas there were many of my things I could not name in my wthat I wished to remain in the family I thought the only wayprevent unpleasentness among you was to assertain what eaone set a value upon and then make them a present of it once so that it would be theirs before I died. I therefore havgiven as follows: Marianne the silver tea pot, Charlie a silvsalver presented to me by the Plumbers Company, Williathe secretair and sundry chairs and bookcase that he had Dulwich, Lydia 1/2 dozen tea spoons 2 tables spoons and silvforks and yourself my gold watch and chain, which you mnow call yours and claim and have whenever an opportunoffers, and as I thought your dear wife would like the tea uand which I also admired my self and thought you wouldsent out with the other things in box namely books which woube profitable reading when I considered your surroundingforgot to say that I gave each of your brothers and sistersBible like the one sent you and wrote their names in each fyou to keep as a memento from the Governor. There arefew things I have disposed of and if there is any thing left th

as I hope you will soon I will attend to your wish if possible. With regard to the Electric light I think you need not fear itsdamaging gas for many years to come although every nowand then they speak of fresh improvements but from all I canhear it has difficulties to overcome that dont reduce the shareson gas since they return to their former price within a little. Iam sorry to say your sister Lydia is under the doctors handsand far from well. As regards my self I vary very much butcertainly better than I have been for a long time and have gotthrough a long and severe winter but at my age I consider I

may be taken off with very little notice, and I assure you I haveno wish to live or die as I consider my Lord knows which isbest for me, and I am content to abide his time although I feelat the best of times rather infirm, and cannot walk far nor fast, and being so deaf, I cannot hear any conversation going on inmy presence unless I am especially addressed. This makesme sit and think very much of the long journey I have travelledand what has happened on the way, and above all the meditateon the promises of the Gospel which I find are indeed gladtidings to me. I did intend to speak more on these things whenI commenced this letter, but I have filled one sheet upon thingstemporal which I thought you would like to be enlightened upon.I will only say in few words I hope you have and will more and

more turn your thoughts to things eternal, if you had half theidea how precious they are to me I am sure you would makethem your chief study. I must now draw to the close of thisespistle full of blunders which you must overlook, give my love

to the children, pray for them (Walter especially) can remembgrandpa: He must be getting usefull, I hope he has plenty employement and diligent in business, setting a good exampto his juniors. Tell them I often think of them and pray for thebut they must above all things pray for theirselves and eaother and then all is sure to end well.

William is still at home unemployed and I hope the steadmovement of N 3 will not be without benefit to him. I do nthink hard thoughts of him. He goes on all I can well wish a

when I think how hard the world is I dont complain and wkeep on pretty good terms with each other, and I thank God has given me the means of leaving him enough to live uponhe is thrifty after I am gone.

We have lost your old acquaintance Mr. Stoneham, he dieabout six weeks ago, also Mr. Richard Kibble about fortnigsince so you see I outlive some of the younger ones. I hopyou study your health, it is necessary. Some do not and aold prematurely. You have something to do. We cannot spayou or rather your young ones cannot. I will now close wlove to all in which all here unite and believe me my dear Georyour affectionate Father.

TRANSCRIPCIN DE LA CARTA DE GEORGE SHERWOODHUDSON A SU HIJO GEORGE

    (12 de diciembre de 1880)

    3 The Circus Greenwich, December 12, 1880

    My dear George,

You may keep as quite a separate letter as I have commenceda different subject respecting your prospectsand view as they

now present themselves to your mind. I never have heard thatthey were, and have often thought you were as much at seawithout a chart on the subjects as myself, this is not an commonthing in circumstances such as yours have been of late yearsbut I think the time has now arrived you should lay down somedefinite plan as the future course best to be ursued for thewelfare of yourself and children, and one that there is areasonable prospect being able to carry out with perseveranceon your part (not forgetting what David says, excepto the Lordbuild the house, their labour is lost that build it, and except theLord keep the City, the watchmen wake in vain) and constantprayer for His guidance and blessing for it is written we mustask to receive and knock if we want Him to open. Do not read

the Scriptures as though they were addressed to others andnot to yourself as one unworthy of His notice, a sort of lookeron only, for remember it is written God cares for sparrows andyou are more value than many sparrows. My having part ofmy life in that error I am able to detect others (and their nameis legion) read Ezekiel XVIII and possibly it may have beenyour state while the world had so many attractions but throughbut through mercy the Lord has taken some away and, is Ihope daily, convincing you how unworthy and deceiving theyare. I (as Paul says) say not these things to accuse you, but asmy beloved son I warn you and remember you in my prayers,I find I am disgressing and will now return to the subject Icommenced this sheet with things temporal.

In order to enable you to lay down some definite plan it isnecessary you should in some measure know what you haveto expect of this things God on his kind providence has givenme to dispose af and with much prayer over many years Ihave intreated Him to direct me in so doing, I believe he hasdone so and at the commencement of this year 1880 I mademy Will (as men speak) but as things here are so changeableand it is impossible for me to know what circumstances maygrow up around me, althought it is possible I feel I may say it isnot at all probable now in my 80th year I shall have occasion toalter them, With these few provisos I will give you an outline ofhow matters stand.

The Vicarage Estate I have divided into two as follows: Thold house and garden and Vicarage Terrace which I have beefortunate enough to let on lease for 14 years to a very rigenleman (for any Orphanage) at a clear rental (less incomTax) of two hundred pounds per annum, and the other pa

consisting the two shops (Blackmur and Francis) and thshop and country house and yard from the front door of OVicarage house (which is now fastened up) to Church Streoccupied by Charlie and all the warehouses and mews to LamLane make up the other part, which is let to Blackmur (excethe part occupied by Charlie) for 195 per annum (leincome tax). We have not yet decided what rent Charlie ispay me, it is time it was, but being a disagreable subject I dolike to press it. You will see from the above how the freeholddivided in my Will, and before I close I purpose giving you aEpitome of all my property, and how it is divided which I hoand believe will be satisfactory so far as you are concerneBe sure and write soon and tell me all you think, there is roo

for more than one opinion on most subjects and I give you myword I shall not be offended if yours happen to differ frommine. Indeed I should if I thought you were in bondage withme now on this or any other subject, dont be afraid of appearinga little selfish it is a selfish subject and ou must express yourselffreely. I cannot be supposed to know without you really do so.Your brothers and sisters are in constant communication withme and I can come at their thoughts in a less formal way thanthrough letters, and if you have anything private enclose it ona separate piece of paper and can burn it if requested to do

so. I can say no more.

In addition to the 2 Freeholds I have 58 shares in BritishEquitable Life Company. Five 200 United States MortgageCompany Bonds at a fixed interest of six per cent, 13 fully paidshares, in the Merchant Shipping Company Limited that havenot paid any dividends for several years past owing to the badstate of shipping trade until about six month ago they sent mea dividend of 5.10.0 so we may hope someday they may bebetter, Ten C shares in the West Kent Building Society at 100 each these pay 5 per cent. I possibly may increase thenumber if I live, as my custom is when I find a larger balanceat my bankers than is necessary with it I take a 100 C shares

and my income is now larger than ever it was, and what is soremarkable I have no trouble in collecting rents having only 3tenants that is Blackmur, Charlie and the Orphanage. That Ishould have been able to let it without any right of way exceptinto Church Passage and at such a high rent appears to meand others nothing short of a miracle, and more it enables meto join Charlies shops, &c with Blackmurs and Franciss in oneFreehold removing the difficulty, as to the Building Act in theevent of a fire happening, and all this has come about withoutmy seeking, except there has been an inward desire of theheart and prayer to be so favoured, and He that searcheth theheart (we read) knoweth the mind of the spirit and if a desire inconcord with the Spirit of Christ it is promised to be granted soyou see how simple the teaching of the Gospel is. I must nowdraw to a close and inform you that Charlie Blackmur, V.Pococke and George Dale are my Executors the later two moreas Trustees to take care of yours and Lydias interests, sowhen the times comes if anything is not in harmony with theabove you can communicate with them and so get it put right.I had forgotten to tell you to be sure and send me word whatyou expect. Do you expect that your company will continue toemploy you until you get to(o) old for the duties or that they willnot renew your periodical engagement after this or any otheryou may make? Also what Walter is doing and his prospectsand also the other two boys, and anything and everything about

them and the girls. I hope if you are likely to return to Englandto finish your days you will think twice before you come to payit a visit, the reaction of returning would be worse than worththe coming to England for. You will be surprised when informedyou that an old friend of yours Mr. Ed Roe of Corfu is treasurerto the orphanage and pays me the rent, he and his wife alwaysinquire very kindly after you, he has dined with me at thePlumbers Company dinners. I must now close all unite withme in love to all. And believe me dear George your veryaffectionate.

TRANSCRIPCIN DE LA CARTA DE CHARLES HUDSON A SUHERMANO GEORGE

    Sydney House

    Hyde Vale,

    Greenwich

    December 20th 1881

    My dear George

In answer to yours of October 16th I enclose copy of Fatherswill in which you will see what and how he has left his property.

I can say as far as the Executors are concerned they will carryout the duties with honesty and to the best of their ability althoWilliam attributes unworthy motives on my part and is putting

us to much annoyance and the Estate to considerable expenseall for nothing.

We Executors are endeavouring to do our duty but he want usto do impossibilities such as windings up the Estate at onceand give him a sum of money which if he had would soon begone.

He has already had more than he is entitled to at present andwithout notice he goes to a lawyer and serves F. Dale, V.Pococke, W. Blackmur and me with a writ from the Court ofChancery which of course we are obliged to defend and whichI fear will put the Estate to great expense without doing the

slightest good to any one. It is the wish of the Executors th

each one shall have every penny they are entitled and that soon as it can be done, but the step he has taken will delay tsettlement. Of course all these things take time for instancthe Landlords will not let the house, we all thought it better fLydia to remain there for the present therefore have not sothe furniture.

It is madness William acting in this way.

I assure you your interest shall be looked after as much asyou where here.

I enclose you a rough statement of account up to the prese

time. It may not be quite correct but it will give you some ideWe are pleased to hear Mr. and Mrs. Thomas arrived homsafely. Unfortunately when Mr. Thomas called on me oSunday in July to wish us good bye Esther was in GermanHe said they were going to start for Chile the end of that wee

I thought as Esther was away I had better ask him to dinnerthe Trafalgar which you know they accepted, but came velate too late for a drive to Woolwich which I intended but thshort time they were I think they enjoyed themselves. I did tbest I could under the circumstances for your sake.

You made a mistake about Ellen; it was Flory who was at schoill in Germany and Esther had to go over to her. While thertook Ellen to Germany and then went with Esther, Ellen, Flo
