Learning and Living Our Catholic FaithMy Dear Brothers and Sisters, Disciples of Christ Jesus,At four Masses in July I Confirmed our Third and Eighth Graders and gave First Holy Communion to our Third Graders. These were moments of Grace and holy joy for them and for all who were able to attend. We asked the newly confirmed to share their experience by asking them three questions "What were you feeling before you received/as you received/after you received the sacraments? What is the most important lesson about these sacraments that you learned? How do you see your relationship with Jesus Christ now that you have received these sacraments?" Below, please read their answers and maybe even ask yourself these same questions and recall the Grace of your own Confirmation and the gift of the Eucharist. Additionally I ask you, Who is your Confirmation Saint? Do you pray to him or her for help? How are you living the grace of your Confirmation? Maybe you've not been Confirmed and are interested in RCIA?

God love you, and please pray for these newly confirmed. - Fr Jeremy OMV

THIRD GRADE

Colette Manns "When I first walked into the church I was so, so, so excited. Not only when I was in the church, but also days before church! After I received both sacraments, I felt a shield of joy coming down on me. I tried not to smile when I received the sacraments but it was impossible! An important lesson that I learned was that ... receiving a sacrament isn't just receiving a sacrament. When you receive a sacrament that is one thing to get you closer to God and that is all you need in this world!"Nicholas Davis "I feel closer to God."James Fischer "Before mass I was happy because I was going to receive Jesus. When I received Jesus I felt so alive because I received Jesus. Since I have received Jesus I have been feeling so open to the Lord."Katherine Fitzgerald "I was very nervous and excited in the beginning and very happy in the end. I also learned that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist."Lia Bellito "I was excited before and while I received my sacraments. Afterwards, I felt happiness. To be the child of God. I am closer with him now."Aidan Leady "Nervous but excited, afterwards I felt good about myself and happy. To be good and love Jesus. Good, I believe and want to stay close with Jesus."Lucia Pulido "Before I received the sacraments I was feeling nervous but there was way more excitement! This was a long time coming! The most important lesson I learned is that when I am receiving communion I am receiving the real body of Jesus and that confirmation will strengthen my soul and help me to do anything she puts her mind to! I feel like every time I receive Jesus, I am an inch closer to him."EIGHTH GRADE

Joey Nugen "Before I received the sacrament, I didn’t feel as holy. When I was receiving it, I felt like all eyes were on me and I felt special. After I felt closer to my faith because I was Confirmed. I learned that the saints are always there for me. I feel closer to Jesus because I received another sacrament."Alec Schmieder "The most important thing is to always love and trust God. He sacrificed his life so we could live."Abigail Elizabeth Philomena Taylor "Before I received the Sacrament of Confirmation, I was humbled because I had just went to Confession. I was also super nervous. I didn’t know what to do. As I was receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, I was extremely excited. Once they explained what I was supposed to do, I could relax and truly focus on what I was about to receive. After I received the Sacrament of Confirmation, I was truly satisfied. I spent the rest of the mass reflecting on how this would change me. For example, I feel more fulfilled, and that I understand the faith a bit more now."Jared Taul "I was feeling anxious and nervous before receiving Confirmation, I felt wholeness and completeness as I was receiving Confirmation, and after I was feeling happy and different. That Confirmation is to make you ready to defend the faith of your church and to protect it. I see that my relationship is better and more complete than it was and I feel closer to him."Ciara Markel "Before I received Confirmation I felt nervous and excited. During the sacrament I felt happy and after I received Confirmation I felt more Holy. I feel like the most important factor of receiving confirmation is the closeness I feel to God. I feel closer to Jesus Christ now that I received the sacrament and I feel more of an understanding with him. Thank you for making this day happen even with all this Covid 19 virus going on."

THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Focus: God is present with us always. If we wait to be adrift upon a stormy sea in order to see that God is present with us, we will miss out on the grace and goodness that currently surrounds us. God’s love is at work in us, in every sacrament; in every moment of prayer; in every gathering of worship; in every act of kindness. He is in the tiniest whisper, and in the outstretched hand of another.Elijah heard God in a tiny whispering sound. Paul writes to the Romans that he has great sorrow and constant anguish in [his] heart for his own people. In the Gospel, Peter becomes frightened while walking on the water toward Jesus. Jesus catches him from sinking.

Br. Leland's FarewellDear Friends in Christ,My heart is full of gratitude as I reflect on this past year here at St. Mary's. Thank you! I can't say it enough. This year has been so full of blessings, even in the midst of so much confusion and disruption. From celebrating so many joyful moments in your lives, to walking with you in times of trial and sorrow; from being welcomed into your homes and families, to sharing with you in the teaching of your children; from the community high points such as Oktoberfest, to the disruption of the pandemic; from your kind words on so many occasions, to the abundance of delicious meals and treats you've shared with the community, you have all been a great blessing to me this year and have made me feel welcomed at St. Mary's. Thank you! Thank you especially for your part in preparing

me for lifelong service as an Oblate of the Virgin Mary and a priest. Please pray for me as I continue my formation at the seminary this fall, and know that you are all in my prayers and my heart as I take this next step. I can't wait to see you all again!

God bless you and keep you!In Christ and the Immaculata,

Br. Leland

———— R C I A ————INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE? Are you or anyone you know interested in exploring the Catholic Church as your church home? Have you been sitting in the pew next to your Catholic spouse for years wondering what you have to do to become Catholic? Have you been listening in to our Facebook Live services during the shelter-in-place order? Statistics show that most people respond to a personal invitation: So THIS IS THAT PERSONAL INVITATION! Join us for refreshments, conversation, questions and answers about Jesus and the Catholic Church. It may look a little different this year because of the Coronavirus, but the same spirit of fellowship will be offered beginning in September. HOW DO PEOPLE FIND OUT ABOUT OUR R.C.I.A. PROGRAM?The answer is, YOU! Our bulletin is read mostly by our own parishioners. Fellow Christians and their love for Jesus and their neighbor, not bulletin articles and announcements, draw people to the Catholic Church and RCIA programs. As we approach the fall season we look forward to receiving another group of inquirers on their faith journey through our Rite of Christian Initiation Program (R.C.I.A.), each member of our parish is called to draw others closer to Jesus and His Church. Prayerfully this summer ask God to SPEAK to you, to CALL you to a deeper walk with Him, and then SEND you to your friends, neighbors, and family to DRAW them closer to Him also. Please contact our RCIA email address or the parish office if you or anyone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or simply interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith, no strings attached: [email protected]; 618-465-4284. Please leave your name, your email address, and your phone number. Let us all pray: Speak to me, Lord. Call me closer to you, Lord. Send me, Lord, in charity to others. Draw those I encounter and myself closer to you, Lord!

Amen

PRAYER CORNERPrayer to Our Lady of the RiversOur Lady of the Rivers, when the rising

waters threatened to overwhelm us, you came to our rescue, just as so many years before, the

Sioux escaped certain death where you now stand.Hear us, your sons and daughters, who again cry out

in our need. As the threat of contagion rises like a flood, steer us by the light of your crown

and Rosary into the Great River of Christ’s Peace and Life, to the safe harbor of His Sacred Heart, through whom we beg this deliverance.

Who lives and reigns with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Have you been on vacation this summer? Many have not, especially this year. But no matter. Faith never takes a vacation. Whether in town or out, Covenant Network can increase your awareness of faith in your life as we offer inspiring and informative programming throughout the day and night. In addition to the Mass and the Rosary, we pray The Angelus, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and other prayers daily. We feature call-in shows that answer questions about Scripture, Church history, lives of the Saints and current events.
