Come to the Ratepayer Meeting

On Wednesday June 16th at 7:30 pm there will be a Ratepayer Meeting in the Eastend Me-morial Hall Tea Room. Ratepayer meetings are an important part of community life. Theyprovide the best opportunity for every one of us to state our concerns and ask questions ofour elected local officials. They can be invaluable in cementing together the joint actionsrequired to achieve community success.

People want to live in a community that is safe, pleasant and affordable, has access to publicamenities and offers things to do. In Eastend we want to foster economic, social and envi-ronmental wellbeing. The Government of Saskatchewan states on their web site that:

The Planning and Development Act, 2007, allows a council to adopt an officialcommunity plan (OCP). The OCP is the keystone of the planning process and is essential inmanaging future growth and development. Under the new legislation, the OCP must be pre-pared in consultation with a professional community planner as licensed under The Commu-nity Planning Profession Act. The purpose of the OCP is to provide a comprehensivepolicy framework to guide the physical, environmental, economic, social and cultural devel-opment of the municipality or any part of the municipality. A community plan is a growthmanagement strategy for a municipality. An OCP enables a municipality to set developmentgoals, objectives and policies which council can use to manage land use, subdivision, mu-nicipal services, and public utilities in the municipality.

Questions that could be raised in our Ratepayer Meeting include, Do we have an OCP forEastend and where are we in the process of its development? Where are we in establishing

new zoning by laws? What is the vision for our community and how can we all participatein accomplishing it? What are our specific goals for the next year to three years?

Everyone is enthusiastic for this town but we may have some differing viewpoints aboutwhat it takes to achieve our goals and how to go about it. Lets hear the questions and thenlisten to what our officials have to say. We can accomplish a great deal together.

I realize that the Chamber of Commerce Annual Community BBQ is being held on the sameevening and, while I encourage everyone to enjoy themselves, I hope you will take the timeto also bring a hot dog and your thoughtful questions to the Ratepayer Meeting. If theMayor and the Councillors are taking the time to be present we should respect that and,likewise, participate ourselves.

A community that is united and organized to achieve its goals is a community that is goingto win.

The Book of Eli

In the not-too-distant future, some 30

years after the final war, a solitary manwalks across the wasteland that was onceAmerica. Empty cities, broken highways,seared earth--all around him, the marks ofcatastrophic destruction. There is no civi-lization here, no law. The roads belong togangs that would murder a man for hisshoes, an ounce of water...or for nothing atall.

Student Returns to Eastendas Featured Artist

Silver Willow Gallery is featuring anexhibit of work by Shayla Olson throughthe end of June. Laurie Reynolds men-tored Shayla in 20062007 and is proudto see her valued student pursuing herartistic expression. The exhibit is an op-portunity to see and follow the develop-

ment of a young local artist as her careercontinues to grow.

The show highlights bright abstracts, pho-tos and sketches from Shaylas body ofwork created over the last few years. Shehas just graduated from Medicine HatCollege and is currently working in thefield of visual communications in Edmon-ton.

Among artists who have influencedShaylas work is the famous Canadianabstract expressionist painter, Jean PaulRiopelle. He first came to prominence as a

member of the Automatistes, a group ofprogressive writers and artists in Quebec.His insight and vision are still potent foryoung artists such as Shayla who are shap-ing Canadian artistic work into the future.

Shaylas work will be on view at the Sil-ver Willow Gallery until the end of June.Additionally, on Saturday, June 19th therewill be a reception and opportunity tomeet the Artist at the gallery starting at 7pm. JK

Could there not be some kind of beautifi-cation for Main St. in Eastend?

I was going to Swift Current recently , andwas very pleased to see all of the plants,trees, etc. that Shaunavon has planted atthe entrances to their town. Very eye-

appealing and welcoming to visitors.In Gull Lake they, too, have done a fine

job of welcoming you with attractive eye-appeal to their town.

Here we have nothing at either end oftown with the exception of two grey dino-saurs put up 25 years ago by the ClayCentre Club. Nothing since!

I also suggested last year that morebenches are needed along the route, forpeople who walk a lot. (Myself, of course,as one of the walkers!) Nothing has been

done yet but many people would benefit.Could we not see a way that our town haseye-appealing and attractive entrances? Icertainly hope so! Suggestions anyone?

Dennis Wilton and ECTA work to restoreScotty to his complete magnificence so hecan continue to welcome Summer visitors toEastend. Other projects are also under wayfor community enhancement.

ECTA provides flowering planters toenhance Maple Ave. after removal of the

trees. Work will also proceed on otherlocations.

Bag Those Bugs

A friend suggested that I look into thenewest weapon in the household war onflies. Simply stated it works by taking a

Zip-Loc bag, dropping in about 4 pen-nies and filling it about 1/4 full withwater. Then the bag is hung by a windowor door to repel flies. The top of the bagmay be punctured in order to be hung.

Apparently, it works. Dont take myword for it, check it out on Google. Per-haps the flies are confused by the lightrefraction? Maybe they get spooky vibesfrom the pennies and plastic. Whoknows? However, this technique is incommon use in Mexico and Latin Amer-ica. Nothing lost in giving it a try.
