Erected at the turn of the 13th and 14th century, the Teutonic Castle stands on a hill towering over the city. The bricked fortress had initially been both the seat of the grand master and a stronghold protecting the order between the Teutonic state and Poland. It also ensured safety of the passage through the Drwęca River.

In time, the castle lost its military significance. In the 17th century it used to be the seat of the princess Anna Vasa, who converted it into a renaissance residence. The princess spend a big time of her life in Golub, extended the castle and created beautiful gardens. A legend has it that a ghost of Anna Vasa still strolls in the castle galleries. The medieval castle in Golub-Dobrzyń is one of the most famous fortresses in Poland owing to, among others, its knight tournaments. Oratory competitions as well as concerts are also held there. The castle is the seat of PTTK Regional Museum, which organizes temporary exhibitions connected with the castle and activities of PTTK.

The palace of Ann a Vasa in Brodnica

The Regional Museum in Brodnicaul. Św. Jakuba 187-300 Brodnica

www.muzeum.brodnica.pl

The palace of Anna Vasa was erected before 1564 on the initiative of Rafał Działyński, a major of the Brodnica county. The seat of the new palace building was an earlier gothic edifice erected in the times of the Teutonic Knights. The main reason for erection of the residence was a fire in the Teutonic castle, an old seat of the supreme power in Brodnica, which broke out in 1550. Fragments of brick walls and pre-castle buildings of the burnt castle were used for erection of the palace. In the years 1605-1625 the palace was the home of princess Anna Vasa, a sister of the Polish king Sigismund Vasa III. Anna Vasa was an intelligent and well educated person. She created a strong cultural centre in Brodnica and often hosted scholars and writers in the palace. Apart from the Swedish princess, the palace also belonged to mayors of the Brodnica county and numerous eminences of those times. The palace may have been a place of stay of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor, who stayed in Brodnica for several days at the beginning of 1807. The palace was extended in the years1678-98. Following a fire of 1945, the palace was restored in the years 1960-70 and used as the seat of the Provincial House of Culture and library. Since 1986 the palace has been the seat of the Regional Museum in Brodnica.

The Granaries in Grudziądz

The ks. dr. Władysław Łęga Museum in Grudziądzul. Wodna 3/586-300 Grudziądz

www.muzeum.grudziadz.pl

The granaries in Grudziądz are located on the Vistula escarpment erecting to the direction of the Teutonic castle ruins. In the Middle Ages, Grudziądz, owing to its location of the river and fertile land, became a significant centre of grain trade and, therefore in the years 1346-1365 they started to build granaries to be used for storage purposes. The line of high granaries substituted the earlier brick wall and, so, the buildings were included in the city fortification system. The roof ridges of the granaries face towards one another creating a defence wall with its height exceeding 20 m. The granaries found on the side of the Vistula were additionally reinforced. Despite the reinforcements, the granaries were partially destroyed. In most of the buildings gothic bricks were preserved only in on the ground floor level and top parts were added in later centuries. In the granaries interiors original wooden structures and beam ceilings have been preserved. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries several granaries were converted into houses. In 1907 a passage leading down to the Vistula was built and one can stroll along the Błonie Nadwiślańskie along the old buildings.

Wyspa Młyńska w Bydgoszczy

Wyspa Młyńska is one of the most exceptional and enchanting places in Bydgoszcz. What makes it exceptional is, above all, its location in the very heart of the city and just a few steps away from the Old Market. Starting from the Middle Ages and throughout several subsequent centuries, Wyspa was an industrial centre of the city. It was the seat of the royal mint, which operated there with intervals from 1594 to 1688. The mint of Bydgoszcz was famous, among others, for its 100 ducats of Sigismund III Vasa, which were, perhaps, the largest gold coins in the history of Europe. Presently Wyspa Młyńska is a green oasis in the centre of the city with nearly four hundred inhabitants. Most of the buildings found on Wyspa Młyńska date back to the 19th century, however, cellars of the so-called White Granary were erected as early as in the 15th century.

The atmosphere of the river isle in Bydgoszcz is today created by water, small bridges, old mills, redbrick buildings reflecting in the waters of the Młynówka, its well-maintained greenery and, above all, chestnut trees.
