Unfortunately, most kids wake up from that dream. But for some high school or college players, being drafted is all too real. I talked to former Brewer and current Fantasy Camp coach, Fernando Viña, about his draft day — or in Fernando's case, draft days. Viña was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 51st round of the 1988 June amateur draft, but didn't sign. At 19 years-old, he felt he just wasn't ready for the next step yet. "At that time of my life, I felt it was better to get a little more seasoning," he said. "I was humbled to death to be drafted, but it was better for me to continue with my schooling and education," he added. Viña attended Sacramento City College and played for the Panthers in 1989, then transferred to Arizona State University in 1990. Following a collegiate season which saw Viña bat .387 for the Sun Devils, Major League baseball came knocking once again. This time it was the New York Mets who drafted him as their 246th pick in the ninth round in 1990. It was James Woodward, the regional scout for the Mets who called Viña with the news. "I was ecstatic," he remembers. "I was looking forward to it, but the draft is an up and down thing that you really can't get caught up in it. I kind of learned at a young age not to get too high or too low because it could really crush you not getting drafted," he added. When Woodward called, Viña wasn't alone. "I was with my family, my parents. It was an exciting day for us," he recalls. "Everybody was happy. It was a special moment." Being drafted once is memorable, but having the opportunity to be drafted twice speaks of the time and dedication Viña put in to reach his dream. "I had been drafted before but it wasn't the right opportunity. But if you continue to work and keep grinding at your skill and your (continued on back) talent to make it better, that opportunity can come around again. And thank God it did." "Going into the draft in '88, a lot of people were questioning, "Can he do it? Is he big enough? Can he handle being a pro baseball player on both sides of the ball?," he said. "That really fueled me." "I still talk to the scout that drafted me to this day, (Yankees) Greg Orr. I tell him "thank you" all the time. I knew they drafted me really late (51st round) for a baseball draft. But in my eyes, it made me feel I could be part of this, I could fit in with all these guys, and I think it gave me fuel to prove and show the rest of the baseball community," he said. "I knew I loved the game...and if I continued to work hard, good things could happen," he added. A week after being drafted, Viña signed his first professional contract with the Mets for $30,000. "Wow! They're actually going to give me $30,000 to start playing baseball as my job!? I couldn't believe it. I would have signed for nothing to go play. When they start paying you to play a game, it takes it to another level. My whole goal was to do what I did to get drafted. I gotta continue to work hard...because I wanna be a big league baseball player," he remembers. Looking back at his career, Viña is proud of his time in baseball, and recalls how his dreams propelled him. "As a little kid, I dreamed and wished I would be a major league baseball player, but everything's stacked against you. All you can do is keep confidence in how hard you work," he said. "Daily, I would look in the mirror and say I've given it all I got. I never thought I'd play one day in the big leagues, let alone almost 13 years. It was special. It was a blessing to have that opportunity and I didn't let it get away from me," he said proudly. Fernando Viña spent 12 seasons in the Majors with five different teams: Seattle (1993), New York Mets (1994), Milwaukee (1995-1999), St. Louis Cardinals (2000- 2003), and Detroit Tigers (2004). He was an All-Star with the Brewers in 1998, and won Gold Glove Awards with the Cardinals in 2001 and 2002. Viña is also on the Brewers' Wall of Honor. Being drafted by a Major League team is a dream many boys share growing up. Unfortunately, most kids wake up from that dream.

But for some high school or college players, being drafted is all too real. I talked to former Brewer and current Fantasy Camp coach, Fernando Viña, about his draft day — or in Fernando's case, draft days.

STEVE HEPP - DRAFT DAY EVALUATIONS

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past,

Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh...people will come Ray. People will most definitely come."

I'm sure many of you remember that quote from the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams.

Campers, the one constant you'll have this week is exactly what Terrance Mann was talking about to Ray Kinsella: Baseball.

Have fun, enjoy the rest of the week and your time at Fantasy Camp. Remember, this is your Field of Dreams.
