Rich Brown could have easilyspent our whole conversationtelling me about the hundredso musicians that the late localkeyboard wiz Dave Soulin-gaz Williams worked with dur-ing his short time with us.

Or he could have gone onendlessly about Williams com-positional skills or his ear ormelody. Rather, he chose toreminisce about his soulmates

sense o humour. Williamspassed away in his sleep last

year rom an aneurism. He wasonly 44. On uesday, Browns

we could, and usually would,play anything and everything.

I remember a gig we oncedid around Christmas andDave wanted to sing Te Policesong Roxanne, he continues.So we started into the tuneand hit that held chord justbeore the vocal entry. Davegrabbed the microphone andinstead o coming in with thosesignature lyrics, he startedsinging Youre a Mean One, Mr.Grinch!ypical Dave, the true

inventor o the mash-up.Brown says Williams abilityto re-harmonize a song on thespot set him apart rom otherkeyboard players.

He would instantaneouslysubstitute his own chords inthe middle o a song, usu-ally sounding better than the

chords that were originallywritten or the song, Brownexplains. He would some-times scream at me to playa wrong note on stage, but

when I did he made my wrongnote sound beautiul.

Brown says Jojo Bowden, alocal drummer, is spearheadingthe drive to establish a scholar-ship in Williams name.

He approached HumberCollege and illed the appli-cation to make this a reality,Brown tells me However,the process requires a lot omoney. I thought putting thisconcert together would helpthe cause and maybe evenraise the money needed tomeet our goal. So ar, weveraised about 30% o the moneythat Humber requires.

I hope and pray that thisconcert will help not only toestablish the scholarship andkeep Dave in the hearts andminds o our community, butthat itll help young musicians
