MentoringStudy Skills

ConfidenceGoal-setting

The pressure on students to excel, especially on those who are the first in their family to receive

higher levels of education, can be overwhelming. In September 2008, CWEF established the

Concordia Women’s Leadership Academy to help support the students who receive CWEF

scholarships. Scholarship recipients are automatically enrolled in monthly CWLA meetings of 25-30

students. These meetings focus on learning study skills, developing life skills, and building confidence.

The regular CWLA meetings also foster the development of a much-needed peer support network

for the participating students.

Ren Jinfeng, Grade 11When Ren was in middle school, she fell sick and had to leave school for two months. This event

affected both her grades and self-confidence. CWLA has provided Ren with the supportive commu-

nity she needed to rebuild a stronger self-image. At group meetings, she shares her feelings and

confidently exchanges opinions with others.

Every CWLA student has a self-made name card. Ren’s card has a heart with two wings.

Drinking Water Projects give villages easy

access to clean water. This reduces the

amount of time each person spends

fetching water and increases the amount

of time each person can work to increase

their family’s income. The village adminis-

ters the system by charging each house-

hold a minimal usage fee.

CWEF began offering micro-credit loans

in China’s Yunnan province as a way to

sustainably invest in the local economy.

CWEF provides loans of 1000-5000 RMB,

which are paid back over a two year

period. Recipients use the loans to buy

animals, better-performing seed, or fertil-

izer.

Community Health Education

Community Health Education (CHE) is a new program that fits perfectly with CWEF’s commit-

ment to sustainable impact. The CHE program trains members of local churches to work as health

trainers in the rural areas surrounding their communities. CWEF holds training workshops that

cover topics like childbirth, child care, nutrition, and basic first aid. The people trained by CWEF will

train others, who will pass along this valuable knowledge to their friends and relatives, creating a

cycle of sustainable change that will bring about lasting improvements in health and hygiene.
