CMS ANNUAL REPORT 2016
CMS ANNUAL REPORT 2016
The Chamber Music Society enjoyed a highly successful 46th Anniversary season of critically acclaimed performances and new initiatives. CMS presented 61 concerts in Alice Tully Hall, the Kaplan Penthouse, and the Rose Studio; 82 touring performances across North America and around the world; and 37 livestreamed events. An international, multi-generational roster of chamber music artists performed over 150 works from the Baroque period to the present, among them premieres of CMS co-commissions by Helen Grime, Paul Lansky, Wolfgang Rihm, and Joan Tower.
The Chamber Music Society’s first Summer Evenings series was a stunning success, filling Alice Tully Hall with enthusiastic audiences, some 60% of whom were attending a CMS concert for the first time. CMS held the first Chamber Music Encounters workshop for exceptional young musicians, culminating in a free concert by the students in Alice Tully Hall. The theme of Biographies threaded through the season, with tributes to Yehudi Menuhin and Fritz Kreisler; the Winter Festival presentation of Beethoven’s complete string quartet cycle; and rare performances of five additional cycles by esteemed composers.
CMS media expanded in new directions with the inauguration of a new partnership with SiriusXM; new distribution of the CMS radio series in Shanghai, China’s largest classical music market; and the collaborative production, with Lincoln Center, of an extended documentary of CMS performances in Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky—the first-ever Live From Lincoln Center performance filmed outside New York City. The program’s air date on PBS is fall, 2016. We are pleased to report that the Strategic Plan guiding CMS toward its 50th anniversary in 2020 made great strides and is fully on track. CMS embarked on
a new branding initiative and the implementation of a complete redesign of its website, both with a launch date of October, 2016.
CMS advanced its educational mission in 2015-16, expanding access to performances, lectures, master classes, and artist chats through livestreams, videos, broadcasts, and social media among music lovers around the world. In New York City and the tri-state area, CMS served over 10,000 people of all ages, bringing chamber music to classrooms and local performing arts centers, and conducting professional development workshops for teachers interested in starting

CMS ANNUAL REPORT 2016
REPORT ON THE SEASONThe Chamber Music Society enjoyed a highly successful 46th Anniversary season of critically acclaimed performances of over 150 works by an international, multi-generational roster of 130 accomplished chamber music artists. CMS launched the first CMS Summer Evenings series, the first Chamber Music Encounters workshop for exceptional young musicians, the first CMS partnership with Sirius XM, the first airing of the CMS radio series in Shanghai, and, in collaboration with Lincoln Center, production of an extended documentary of the Chamber Music Society’s 2015 residency at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Kentucky, the first Live From Lincoln Center program filmed outside New York City.
The season’s theme, Biographies, explored life stories in music, told through the complete string quartets of Beethoven and five other esteemed composers: Zemlinsky, Nielsen, Bartók, Ginastera, and Kirchner. CMS repertoire spanned four centuries, from the Baroque period to new CMS
co-commissions by Joan Tower, Paul Lansky, Wolfgang Rihm, and Helen Grime. In all, CMS presented 143 concerts: 61 in New York and 82 during tours and residencies in North America, Europe, and Asia, among them the second summer residency at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and a new residency with the Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Through its growing array of digital and broadcast media, CMS provided easy access to chamber music performances, lectures, master classes, and artist chats. CMS leadership and staff worked intensively to develop new branding and a complete redesign of the CMS website to be implemented in the fall of 2016.
The Board of Directors extended the contract of CMS Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han through 2022, assuring their highly appreciated leadership through the Chamber Music Society’s 50th Anniversary season in 2020 and beyond.

SUMMER EVENINGSThe first summer series in CMS history was a successful overture to the 2015-16 season. The series attracted sold-out audiences. Over 60% were new to CMS and many were young adults. In its “Goings on About Town” preview, The New Yorker called the first of the three programs, comprised of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, “as refreshing as lemonade.”
HAYDN, MENDELSSOHN, & SCHUMANNCMS opened the season with three jewels of the chamber music repertoire by Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. On this festive evening, CMS awarded the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Award for Extraordinary Service to Chamber Music to Marlboro Music in honor of the 50th anniversary of Musicians from Marlboro, which has influenced the lives and careers of countless musicians.

RESONANCECMS Artistic Directors, cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han, designed this program to highlight the power of music to inspire, impassion, and transport. The duo delighted listeners with their performances of intensely emotional compositions by Chopin, Glazunov, Moszkowski, Messiaen, and Strauss, signature works of their repertoire.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE VIOLIN

THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE VIOLIN paid tribute to the expressive violin style epitomized by Fritz Kreisler in a program of works that he loved to perform and his own Quartet in A minor for Strings. A multi-generational cast of early-career violinists Benjamin Beilman, Sean Lee, and Danbi Um; master violist Paul Neubauer; and renowned cellist and CMS Co-Artistic Director David Finckel performed.
MENUHIN AT 100 celebrated the centennial of legendary violinist and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin in a concert curated by his longtime friend and musical colleague, violinist Daniel Hope. This eclectic program presented traditional works Menuhin loved and pieces written in tribute to him by Philip Glass, Bechara El-Khoury, Arvo Pärt, and Shulamit Ran; Ms. Ran attended the concert. Mr. Hope and a dozen fellow musicians gave spirited performances, as music critic Bruce Hodges commented: “Daniel Hope knows how to throw a party” (New York Classical Review, March 5, 2016).

AMERICAN VISIONSThis concert immersed the audience in the American musical heritage, expressed through music by Gottschalk, Dvořák, Ives, and Crumb—composers who skillfully incorporated aspects of American popular or folk music into their work. CMS also presented this program at the Harris Theater in Chicago, IL, where the Chicago Classical Review called it an “American feast.”
THE ROMANTIC VIOLALongtime CMS violist Paul Neubauer curated a viola-centered program showcasing the beauty and versatility of this instrument. A highlight of the concert was the world premiere of Joan Tower’s new work, Simply Purple for Viola, a CMS commission and the latest of three pieces for solo viola that Ms. Tower has composed for Mr. Neubauer. Ms. Tower attended the performance.

BAROQUE FESTIVALIn December, 2015, an accomplished cast gave festive performances of the Brandenburg Concertos, a New York tradition. In the words of music critic James R. Oestreich, these performances “positively brimmed with life” (The New York Times, December 13, 2015). The annual Baroque Collection of rare and beloved gems displayed the era’s endless musical variety, and The Baroque Keyboard presented a multifaceted program spanning more than a century of Baroque music. performed by pianist Konstantin Lifschitz.

STRAUSS, BRAHMS, & DVORÁKThe season culminated in a concert of sumptuous works for strings which exemplified the richness of musical conversation that is the essence of chamber music. In notes on the program, longtime CMS violinist Ani Kavafian wrote: “Not only do these works represent some of the “best of” Strauss, Brahms, and Dvořák, but they allow us the joy of making music within the timbre of multiple strings.”

WINTER FESTIVAL: THE BEETHOVEN CYCLE The heart of the season was the complete string quartet cycle and “Grosse Fuge” of Beethoven, performed in chronological order by five ensembles—the Jerusalem Quartet, Miró Quartet, Orion String Quartet, Escher String Quartet, and Danish String Quartet. Music critic George Grella praised the Jerusalem Quartet for opening the cycle with “fine, elegant, and intelligent performances” and lauded the Danish String Quartet for closing the cycle with performances of “revelatory simplicity” (New York Classical Review, February 1 and 22, 2016). The Beethoven Cycle was the centerpiece of an extended exploration of string quartet cycles which traced the biographies of Beethoven and five esteemed composers who came after him.

GINASTERA CYCLE LECTURE
Watch Bruce Adolphe’s video on the Ginastera cycle: https://goo.gl/lGF5gJ
The performance of the complete string quartet cycles of Zemlinsky, Nielsen, Bartók, Ginastera, and Kirchner deepened the season’s exploration of the string quartet genre and were, in the words of New York Times music critic James R. Oestreich, “among the most highly anticipated presentations of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center this season” (The New York Times, October 30, 2015). Short documentary videos curated by CMS Resident Lecturer Bruce Adolphe preceded each performance, further enriching listeners’ appreciation
of composers whose string quartet cycles, with the exception of Bartók’s, are not frequently performed. Of the Zemlinsky cycle’s performance, music critic George Grella wrote: “This approached the Platonic idea of a concert, music played at the highest possible level and with the most profound and meaningful thinking. Through the artistry of the Escher Quartet, on this night Zemlinsky became one of the greats” (New York Classical Review, October 30, 2015). The performances of the other cycles won similarly high critical praise.

ROSE STUDIO CONCERTS AND LATE NIGHT ROSE Rose Studio and Late Night Rose concerts present treasured and rediscovered repertoire performed by early-career musicians of the highly-competitive CMS Two program and longtime CMS musicians in the intimate Rose Studio. Concerts are performed twice each evening: at 6:30 P.M. with traditional seating, and at 9:00 P.M. (Late Night Rose) with café-style seating, a complimentary glass of wine, and engaging commentary.
A highlight of the 2015-16 series was the performance of works by Mozart and Fauré by pianist Michael Brown, violinist Chad Hoopes, violist Matthew Lipman, and cellist Colin Carr. Fred Child of Performance Today guest hosted the Late Night Rose performance and interviewed the artists, and the program aired on Performance Today as well as the CMS Watch & Listen livestream. Late Night Rose concerts were livestreamed and available to view on-demand for up to 24 hours following their performance.

The 2015-16 New Music series presented 20 works by accomplished contemporary composers, among them premieres of CMS co-commissions by Paul Lansky and Wolfgang Rihm. Mr. Lansky attended the concert and spoke about his new work. Music critic George Grella praised Mr. Rihm’s first sextet, writing: “Dense, involving, mystifying, this is music that demands to be heard more widely” (New York Classical Review, March 25, 2016). Writing about the New Music concert of April 28, 2016, New York Classical Review critic
Bruce Hodges wrote: “Like any other classical repertoire, contemporary works are at their most persuasive when played by world-class artists who have assimilated what the composer wants to say. In the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s final New Music in the Kaplan Penthouse program of the season, the six musicians on stage made that truism abundantly clear.” New Music concerts were live-streamed and available to view on-demand for up to 24 hours following their performance.

CMS touring grew from 55 touring performances in 2011-12 to 82 in 2015-16, bringing chamber music performances of the highest artistic excellence to listeners across North America and around the world. CMS artists also gave master classes, coachings, open rehearsals, and lectures for local students and audiences. These activities build the Chamber Music Society’s reputation and broaden appreciation of chamber music. In 2015-16, CMS artists performed at distinguished performing arts centers in the U.S, Canada, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan; on CMS patron cruises to the Baltic and Alaska; and during a patron trip to Vienna, serving some 22,000 listeners in 38 cities. CMS enjoyed a successful second summer residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and second residency at Purchase College, SUNY, and began a new residency at the Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. As noted, CMS collaborated with Lincoln Center on the production of the first-ever Live From Lincoln Center program filmed outside New York City, an extended documentary about the Chamber Music Society’s May, 2015 performances at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The program’s television air date on PBS is fall, 2016.

CHAMBER MUSIC FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES CMS continued to expand its digital media,
which are attracting a wider audience to chamber music. Viewers from more than 100 countries watched CMS livestreams of 37 concerts and educational events. CMS video recorded all of its concerts in Alice Tully Hall for the CMS archive. Viewers
The 2015-16 season was a year of growth and evolution for CMS Young Audience programs. Chamber Music 360, a subscription package of three tickets for $60 for young adults ages 21-39, enjoyed a 33% increase in sales over the previous season. CMS launched a Young Patrons program, creating a pathway for young chamber music lovers to become philanthropists early in life. The CMS Summer Evenings concert series of July, 2015 attracted some 250 young adults, many of whom were new to CMS. CMS also cultivated young people by inviting prospective Young Patrons and members of Chamber Music 360 to selected special events, such as a concert and reception with the artists at the Geary Contemporary art gallery. CMS partnered with Groupmuse, a social network bringing young musicians together with young adults for home concerts. A special ticket offer to Groupmuse members resulted in the sale of 130 tickets to the CMS concert on May 13, 2016, and many of these ticket buyers enjoyed a post-concert reception in the Rose Studio.
CMS MEDIAwatched over 1.6 million minutes of CMS videos on the CMS YouTube channel, an increase of 78% over the prior season. The CMS 52-week radio series and live-recorded performances on Performance Today were broadcast and streamed to over 10 million listeners across the U.S.; the series was also broadcast in Europe and Asia, including new distribution in Shanghai, China. In January, 2016, SiriusXM began airing CMS live-recorded performances weekly on its Symphony Hall channel. CMS also embarked on a rebranding initiative and a complete redesign of its website, with a launch date of October, 2016. As noted, CMS collaborated with Lincoln Center to produce an extended documentary about the Chamber Music Society’s 2015 residency at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, the first Live From Lincoln Center program filmed outside New York City. The program airs on PBS in fall, 2016. CMS maintains a lively and growing presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

EDUCATION
CHAMBER MUSIC ENCOUNTERSCMS held its first Chamber Music Encounters program, an immersive week-long workshop for exceptional young musicians inspired by the workshops of the late Isaac Stern. A legendary faculty imparted the musical wisdom gleaned from generations of distinguished experience to fifteen competitively-selected students from around the world, all of whom received full scholarships. The program culminated in a free public concert by the students in Alice Tully Hall on June 18, 2016. Suliman Tekalli, a violin student in the program, wrote: “Thank you for this amazing experience! You know, as the week progressed, I’d have random moments where I could not believe how privileged I was to be playing for all of you and receiving such a vast amount of experience in so many layers.”
CMS advanced its educational mission in 2015-16 with new initiatives and a wide range of ongoing programs for listeners of all ages. In New York City and the tri-state area, CMS served over 10,000 listeners and musicians. As noted, education is also integral to CMS touring engagements and residencies, and CMS extends access to master classes, lectures, artist chats, and more by recording them for the CMS education archive, accessible free of charge on the CMS website and free mobile app. CMS collaborates annually with Lincoln Center on community outreach programs. In 2015-16, CMS artists participated in the Lincoln Center Boro-Linc program of free performances for families in New York City’s five boroughs, the Spring Fling family arts event at Lincoln Center, and the Lincoln Center Moments program for cognitively impaired adults. CMS makes free or discounted tickets available to students and underserved communities.
CMS TWOCMS welcomed a new group of CMS Two individual artists in 2015-2016. These artists, selected from an international pool of applicants through rigorously competitive auditions, joined two CMS Two ensembles that were in the third year of their three-year residency. All of these young artists were fully integrated into all CMS activities throughout the season. CMS Two violist Matthew Lipman has described CMS Two as “a program and opportunity that has completely changed my life.”
MEET THE MUSIC! FAMILY CONCERTSThis series of three imaginative, educational concerts conceived and directed by CMS Director of Family Programs, Bruce Adolphe, was sold out, as in the previous season. Each concert was preceded by an Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby of Alice Tully Hall, where children “tried” classical instruments under the guidance of CMS musicians. CMS keeps ticket prices low to make these programs affordable for families — subscriptions for all three concerts start at $27, and individual tickets start at $10. Groups or organizations are encouraged to contact CMS to arrange free tickets for underserved families. Mr. Adolphe and CMS artists also performed in the Spring Fling at Lincoln Center, a family-oriented event held on May 14, 2016 on Josie Robertson Plaza.

YOUNG ENSEMBLES AND YOUNG MUSICIANS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSThese programs provide professional coachings by CMS musicians during the school year, culminating in performances by the students at Lincoln Center. On May 26, 2016, Young Ensembles (middle school students) gave their 21st annual performance at the Rose Studio; the concert was livestreamed. The Young Musicians (high school students) performed their 33rd annual concert on April 14, 2016 in Alice Tully Hall. This concert was video recorded and archived for viewing on the CMS website.
YOUNG MUSICIANS EXPANSIONCMS aims to nurture interest and participation in chamber music among students in school settings. To this end, CMS published a handbook for teachers, Building a Chamber Music Program: A Teacher’s Guide, in 2015. In 2016, CMS Education staff presented this guide as part of professional development workshops they conducted at important music teacher conferences, such as the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA). CMS also took steps to plan regional expansion of Young Musicians concerts in 2016-17.
MUSIC UP CLOSECMS invited middle and high school students to five working rehearsals during the season; over 300 students attended. During these sessions, students observe how CMS musicians prepare for a concert. After the rehearsal, the students—many of whom are studying an instrument themselves—can ask the musicians questions about their performance or the life of a professional musician.

CHAMBER MUSIC BEGINNINGSCMS gave over 2,100 elementary school children from diverse neighborhoods in New York City a solid grounding in musical concepts, aligned with the NYC Department of Education’s Music Blueprint. The program also served over 700 students in New Jersey. Students attended entertaining, educational concerts at Flushing Town Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and in their own classrooms. CMS scheduled Unit 1 in November rather than February, successfully overcoming the challenge of February’s snowy weather. CMS gave two additional CMB concerts in collaboration with Lincoln Center’s Boro-Linc program, which brings free, world-class family programming to all five boroughs.

STUDENT PRODUCERSHigh school students from tri-state area schools met bi-weekly with CMS staff, learned the inner workings of an arts institution through hands-on activities, and planned events to attract fellow students to chamber music. In 2015-16, the students produced three pre-concert events for their peers at Alice Tully Hall.
INSIDE CHAMBER MUSICThis celebrated series of eight lectures by CMS Resident Lecturer Bruce Adolphe reveals the inner workings of repertoire performed during the season. In 2015-16, Mr. Adolphe uncovered the close connections between Romanticism and Modernism in four fall lectures and analyzed the “passionate classicism” of Romantic composers in four spring lectures. All eight lectures were livestreamed and video recorded for easy access via the CMS website and CMS YouTube channel.
PRE-CONCERT LECTURESEducator and musician Michael Parloff gave six pre-concert lectures on the Beethoven Cycle. Pre-concert videos on each of the String Cycle concerts in the Rose Studio, curated by CMS Resident Lecturer Bruce Adolphe, enriched the listening experience. Author Eric Wen, former editor of The Strad, spoke on the romantic violin tradition. Composer Helen Grime participated in a pre-concert discussion of her new work, Aviary Sketches (after Joseph Cornell) for Violin, Viola, and Cello.
MASTER CLASSESThese events give listeners a rare view of how renowned musicians pass on their wisdom to the next generation. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, cellist Torleif Thedéen, the Escher String Quartet, violinist Sean Lee, and pianist (and CMS Co-Artistic Director) Wu Han instructed music students from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Stony Brook University, The Juilliard School, Yale University, the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, and the Manhattan School of Music in the fine points of technique and interpretation, in front of appreciative audiences.
