A Peaceful Scene I remember many years ago looking at a painting hanging on the wall at the home of one of my relatives. It was entitled, “The Road to Emmaus.” It was a beautiful, serene scene of Jesus walking towards Emmaus with the two disciples mentioned in today’s Gospel. They were at the edge of a forest and it appeared to be late afternoon or early evening. In the distance, you could see the outline of the village. As a child, I could only imagine what they were talking about, but I do remember being struck with a sense of peace as I looked at the painting. I am sure there was some peace in that situation when it actually took place. More than that, however, there had to be a sense of confusion, disappointment and finally hope. Yes, the disciples were hoping Jesus would be the one they had been waiting for. They knew He was crucified, but now they heard news that He was alive! What were they to make of all this? It is a truly moving line in the Emmaus story, when the disciples ask themselves, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) Yet, in the end, something good happened. They

did recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. They were able to share this good news with all doubt and confusion giving way to joy and exultation. Their hearts then burned with love for and devotion to the Lord. Let us ask ourselves if we recognize Jesus when He appears to us. We know He is there in the breaking of the bread when He gives Himself to us in the Eucharist. We know He is there when He speaks to us in the Scriptures. We know He is there when we experience love and compassion from someone. Jesus is not to be found in the tomb but among His people, continuing to show His love for them!

We Offer Our Prayers Administration Ministries

Please Support Our Advertisers

Our Sunday bulletin is one of the primary ways we communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J. S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers—many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. We ask you to consider patronizing these businesses and when you do, take a moment to tell the owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. Thanks!

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]

To be good stewards we must be good shepherds, willing to lay down our lives for those committed to our care, not mere hired hands who run off, “leaving the sheep to be snatched and scattered by the wolf.”

The collection amount for the Third Sunday of Easter is $6,806

Thank you! Your generosity is greatly appreciated & needed!

As we forge ahead in 2021 we leave great moments of memory. Whether you want to capture memories from last year or this year, celebrate someone’s birthday or anniversary, you can get support and ideas from the scrapbookers who meet via Zoom on Friday at 8 PM the last Friday of the month to support others who wish to make lasting memories and provide tributes to others. If you would like an invitation to attend Zoom scrapbooking for St. James on April 30 please email [email protected].

Finding the Sacred in Scrapbooking

We have been blessed with a donation that is allowing us to have a private movie showing at Studio Grill in Wheaton on Sunday, May 16th. We will be watching Princess Bride. Be sure to register your family for this event through Flocknote, or contact our youth minister, Gina, today.

Recent Revisions & Updates to the Implementation of Reopening Directives

The St. James Reopening Leadership Team continues to meet on a regular basis, ready to implement any changes in directives received from Bishop Hicks, as well as to assess and adjust implementation of the current directives as needed. Communications we recently received from the Bishop’s office have directed us to stay true to the directives put into place when we reopened in July of 2020, including but not limited to registration for Masses and events, pre-screening for COVID symptoms, hand sanitizing, masking and six feet social distancing of non-domiciled persons. We want to thank all of our volunteers whose assistance makes it possible for us to be open and maintain a safe environment for those who have returned for public worship.

There are two adjustments the team is going to make to the way in which we implement the directives. They are as follows: 1) Changes in Capacity for Funerals and

Weddings. As of April 12th, based upon the number of volunteers available to assist at funerals and weddings, we have been able to increase our capacity from 25 to 50 attendees (in addition to the celebrant and our volunteer team).

2) Trial of New Protocol for Weekday Masses Only beginning May 3rd. Beginning on Monday, May 3rd, we are going to try out a new protocol for Weekday Mass attendance. Instead of requiring pre-registration, we will only require check-in when you arrive. We will have a roster with the contact information for all of our regular daily Mass attendees so that we may simply check off when you are in attendance. If you aren't a regular Mass attendee, we will simply require you to check in with your name and a way to contact you. This is so that we can ensure the ability to contact you should there be a need for contact tracing, which we are still required to do by our diocese. After a few weeks, if this procedure works well and we are able to stay within a manageable ratio of ushers to attendees we will adopt this protocol moving forward for Weekday Masses.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: [email protected]

Treat a Teacher

Please join the Women’s Giving Circle, a fund of the Catholic Education Foundation, to give back to our teachers the week of May 3rd. We are supplying all Diocese of Joliet grade school teachers with a lunch as a gesture of appreciation for all that they have done this year for our students, families, and school communities. Donations are being accepted at www.givecentral.org/treatateacher. Any additional funds raised will go back to support the classroom grants available annually for teachers.
