Chester W. Obuchowski, 1919-91 CHESTER W. OBUCHOWSKI, PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF Romance and Classical Languages at the University of Connecticut, where he taught from 1949-89, passed away in March of this year. A graduate of Manchester (CT) High School, he received both the BA and MA from Fordham University and the doctorate in Romance languages from Yale. During World War II, he served as a French inter- preter for Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces.

He was a member and former president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer of the Connecticut chapter, Ameri- can Association of Teachers of French. For sixteen years

he was also on the state advisory committee on foreign language instruction.

The author of numerous articles on French literature and foreign language instruction, he was also the author of Mars on Trial: War as Seen by French Authors of the Twentieth Century, The Franco-File, and other books.

A memorial fund in Professor Obuchowski's name has been established at the University of Connecticut. It seeks to award an annual prize to the best student-teacher of a modern foreign language in a given year. Donations may be sent to The Chester W. Obuchowski Fund, Development Office U-190, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06268.
