    More than a quarter-century ago,

    French winemakers from Cham-

    pagne Deutz surveyed the stubborn

    volcanic and limestone soils of the rolling

    hills within view of the Pacific Ocean on Cali-

    fornias Central Coast and realized the unique

    conditions mirrored those of their native

    land.

    Those French roots continue to influencethe sparkling and still wines produced by the

    father-son winemaking team at Laetitia Vine-

    yard & Winery.

    Dave Hickey had just moved to California

    in 1982, about the same time the French viti-

    culturists began planting vineyards on the

    Arroyo Grande Valley hillsides to Pinot Noir,

    Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc that led to the

    launch of Maison Deutz.

    The coincidental timing ultimately led

    Hickey to a career as a winemaker that

    included traveling to France to observe andlearn the styles and techniques employed by

    leading Champagne producers.

    That included Methode Champenoise, a

    time-consuming process used in France

    generally regarded as responsible for the

    complex wines from the Champagne region.

    It is a method that Hickey and Laetitia

    continue to use to produce premium

    sparkling wines.

    Upon returning from France, Hickey

    worked at Maison Deutz alongside Christian

    Roguenant, continuing to refine his wine-

    making skills.

    Maison Deutz was sold in 1997 and two

    years later Hickey became winemaker at

    Laetitia, overseeing the sparkling wine

    program. A year after that, Hickeys son, Eric,

    was given the responsibility of overseeing

    Laetitias still wine program.

    Its great to be able to work in the samecellar with my son, and to be working on two

    completely different programs, said Hickey.

    We bounce ideas off of each other all the

    time, and its been great to watch Eric turn

    into such an accomplished winemaker, virtu-

    ally before my eyes.

    Family is a consistent theme at Laetitia.

    Erics younger brother, Dustin, is the Produc-

    tion Supervisor, while his mother, Carmen,

    supervises the winerys tasting room.

    While the sparkling wines are a nod to the

    winerys French heritage, Laetitias flagshipvarietal is Pinot Noir, which continues to gain

    notice among the devoted fans of the finicky

    grape.

    Of the 620 acres planted at Laetitia, 450

    are planted to Pinot Noir. (Chardonnay, at 85

    acres, is the next largest planting.)

    Eric Hickey said the various soil types

    found throughout the vineyard combined

    with the planting of numerous different Pinot

    Noir clones enables him to craft wines with

    unique characteristics.

    Its not just that we only use estate-gro

    grapes, but that we can provide a full pal

    of what we can do.

    Only three miles from the ocean,

    topography of the rolling hills channels

    breezes across the vineyard, making

    Arroyo Grande Valley viticultural region

    of the coolest in California.

    The unique conditions has led to noworthy results.

    The Dec. 31 issue of Wine Enthus

    magazine honors a trio of Pinot Noir bottli

    from Laetitia. The 2006 Les Galets sin

    vineyard Pinot earned 94 points, while

    2006 La Colline single vineyard w

    awarded 93 points. And the publica

    awarded 95 points to Laetitias 2006 Rese

    Pinot Noir.

    One of the unusual features of the 20

    vintage was the decision to harvest all

    fruit in the dark. Grapes were picked in ctemperatures from late at night into the p

    dawn hours, a decision the Hickeys and v

    yard manager Lino Bozzano made to help

    fruit retain its bright flavors, acids and sug

    owner Selim Zilkhas daughter.

    The 2006 white is a Rhone-

    style blend, while the 2004 red is

    a Cabernet Sauvignon-based

    Burgundian-style blend. Both

    wines use grapes from the

    winerys Santa Barbara Highlands

    Vineyard.The Laetitia tasting room is

    among the favorites of both locals

    and visitors to the Central Coast.

    Easily accessed off Highway 101

    just south of Arroyo Grande, the

    hilltop location dotted with

    coastal live oaks, serene picnic

    areas and sweeping views of Avila

    Bay in the distance combine for a

    memorable experience.

    Visitors also get a chance to

    see something they wont see at

    any other winery in the United

    States a pair of rare, European

    wooden basket presses made by

    the Coquard Company of France.

    These are not simply conver-

    sation pieces. While labor-inten-

    sive, the basket presses which

    each hold approximately 4.4 tons

    of fruit enable the winery to

    crush grapes very gently and

    evenly, delivering superiorquality juice with excellent

    clarity. The juice flows by gravity

    to a tank room below the presses,

    where it ferments in a combina-

    tion of stainless steel and older

    French oak barrels.

    Watching cellar workers

    operate the presses is a popular

    attraction during the harvest in

    late summer.

    Laetitia offers both compli-

    mentary tastings, as well as areserve tasting menu for a

    nominal fee.

    In 1998 Hunt Cellars released its first wines including a Zinfandel

    that earned a 90-point rating from Wine Enthusiast magazine. Obvi-

    ously, the winemaker had talent from the beginning. Since then many

    of their Zins have rated 90-93 points and their 2000 Tawny PortOldie But Goodie scored 93 points, one of the highest of any Tawny

    Port produced in California

    Just over ten years later, Owner/Winemaker David Hunt continues

    to refine his talents, and the accolades keep coming. When you walk

    into the Hunt Cellars tasting room in Paso Robles, you cant help but

    notice an impressive collection of gold medals.

    Who wants to be second place? David Hunt once told a visitor

    who noticed he didnt display any silver medals awarded to his Hunt

    Cellars Wines.

    As the years progress, the accolades, awards and recognitions

    continue to build with virtually every wine sold at Hunt Cellars

    winning multiple golds, best of class or scoring 90 points or better.Hunt Cellars was recently heralded as the next cult winery by

    members of the American Wine Society, Tuck School of Business at

    Dartmouth College and others. Not too many wineries can say that.

    Hunt attributes his success to a great team from the tasting room staff

    to the vineyard manager and production assistants.

    But its not the awards that drive David its the pursuit of perfec-

    tion. Hes been known to spend hours blending and reblending,

    working to find the ideal balance for each barrel and bottle. Quality

    fruit from his estate vineyards, combined with extraordinary patience

    enable Hunt Cellars to produce wines that consistently impress.

    But it doesnt take a great winemaker when you start with a great

    vineyard. Davids wines are produced only from his mountain-top,hillside vineyards. The rocky terrain stresses the vines which, in turn,

    produces smaller berries with more intense, concentrated fruit flavors.

    Were not in a rush to produce a product, said Hunt, until its

    ready. That could mean leaving wine in the barrel for up to 32

    months, if thats what he feels it needs. There may be awards deco-

    rating the tasting room, but the true reward is in the bottle. H

    Cellars offers a hearty collection of robust reds, each with its o

    distinct personality, varietal character and long, velvet finish.

    Hunt feels the finish is the hardest part of winemaking. Its vitalany wine as it lingers on the palate to leave you wanting more. Hu

    who is blind, said perhaps his own palate has become heightened

    more sensitive, allowing him to detect and perfect any subtle incon

    tencies.

    Hunt Cellars wines can be found in several of the countrys m

    prestigious restaurants such as Ruths Chris Steak House, Biltm

    Hotels, Four Seasons Luxury Hotels and Resorts, and Ritz Carl

    Hotels and Resorts.

    Hunt Cellars tasting room is located along Highway 46 Wes

    Paso Robles. The rolling hills and oak-studded grounds make an i

    setting for exploring the Hunt Cellars collection. Inside the tast

    room, a white grand piano greets guests, reminding them of Dav

    musical background. A long handcrafted tasting table, built by Da

    and his sons, invites guests to stay and visit. It also serves as the cen

    of warm evenings with the winemaker during winemaker dinn

    where guests are often treated to a concert by David.

    Paso Robles is an area of great charm and

    beauty, two things it has been known for,for well over a century. In the last decade

    or two the world is starting to take notice that

    it also an area where some great and honestwines are being made. Located midway

    between San Francisco and Los Angeles it is

    just 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and thatfactor, combined with the topography and the

    soil and the elevation makes for one interestingplace to grow grapes and make wines.

    At Eberle Winery they have been doing just

    that since Gary Eberle (Eberle means smallboar in German) founded the winery that

    bears his name in 1983. Three years before that

    he was a co-founder of the Paso Robles Appel-lation. In 1994 he decided that going under-

    ground was a good idea, so 16,000 square feetof caves were built, to assure optimum temper-

    ature and humidity, two things which they do

    naturally.Today his winery produces about 25,000-

    30,000 cases of wine annually, much of it from

    the surrounding estate vineyards. And now,after all those years in the business of

    producing wine, Eberle remains one of the topaward winners in the country.

    The wines produced include a Cabernet

    Sauvignon, Barbera and the Ctes-du-Rbles

    think about the name for a second a blend ofMourvedre, Syrah, Grenache. Then there are

    Syrah and Shiraz, Chardonnay and Viognier, a

    Port and even a Muscat Canelli. And that is noteven the whole list.

    Ben Mayo is now the winemaker at EberleWinery he took over the reins for the 2003

    vintage, and he seems not just comfortable at

    the winery, but very, very happy with theregion as well.

    There is an openness that you dont have in

    a lot of places. Were still a rural environmentand I dont think that will change, he said

    recently. This is what Napa Valley used to belike forty or fifty years ago is what people tell

    me.

    As to his philosophy of making wine? Forour wines it is a consistent work in progress

    where I learn more and more eachyear. I come

    from an art environment and making wine it isan organic process, just like painting. You

    never really know when a painting is finished.Then Ben laughs and says, I tell people it is

    like juggling Jell-O.

    As to his personal favorites? I think acouple of varietals stand out in our region. The

    Cabernet Sauvignon being made here including our own is exceptional. The Rhone

    varietals also really suit this region, and my

    personal favorite is the Barbera. I see

    Barbera varietal as making a female a fenine wine. By that I mean one with a deli

    structure and sensitive to production mani

    lation. In fact it is like Pinot Noir in that weven though we dont happen to mak

    Pinot. When asked about what else he en

    about this alchemy of turning grapes into

    wine, his answer is simple. I get excited abseeing what comes in at harvest; I get exci

    when I see what comes in off the fields e

    important single-varietal Rhone wines,

    Santa Ynez Inn: Santa Barbara CountysPremier Wine Country Destinationby Mark Storer

    When the Santa Ynez Inn opened its doors

    in October of 2001, it was with the purpose

    of providing a luxurious Victorian Inn experi-

    ence right in the heart of Santa Barbara

    Countys Wine Country. That mission has

    been accomplished and with the recent addi-

    tion of six new rooms, the Inn is making its

    mark in the quiet rolling hills of Santa Ynez.

    Our rooms are between 500 and 750

    square feet each, says General Manager Rick

    Segovia. All of them have antique furnish-

    ings and theyre all unique. That might be a

    bit of an understatement. Consider the heated

    tile floors for the steam showers, the fire-

    places and balcony or patio in each room or

    the Whirlpool tubs with separate showers.

    The Santa Ynez Inn is all about luxuriating in

    the quiet of the Santa Ynez Valley.

    Located right off of Highway 246, near

    Solvang and Los Olivos, the Inns gardens and

    the Victorian-era building itself are an inviting

    oasis here where customer service is key. We

    feature getaway golf packages and romance

    packages, says Segovia, but we also offer

    mid-week package specials.

    With plenty of space for banquets and

    weddings, the Inn has become a destination

    spot as well. Segovia and his staff provide a

    full on-site catering kitchen and the Inns chef

    will create the menu and do the cooking. The

    lawn and gardens provide a spacious, beau-

    tiful and secluded setting for special events

    and the staff can even assist with decorations,

    flowers and other needs.

    The Inn also provides connections, reser-

    vations and suggestions for the many activi-

    With success like Wild Horse Winery

    has had, one might be surprised to

    learn that the only estate wines they

    produce are from little known varietals like

    Blaufrankisch and Verdelho. These grapes are

    not the powerhouse Syrah or Pinot Noir so

    well known on the Central Coast. But, thats

    not entirely surprising since Wild Horse has

    always been a winery that likes its maverick

    status.

    Having just finished celebrating 25 years

    of winemaking, Wild Horse enters its 26th

    year with a few new names, the same serious

    Central Coast quality and increased produc-

    tion.

    Were at 220,000 cases a year currently,

    says tasting room manager Leslie Churchill,

    who came to Wild Horse six months ago from

    the Napa Valley. Weve just released our new

    Syrah and we have four different Pinot Noirs

    in the market currently.

    Owned by Constellation Brands, Wild

    Horse has retained its focus on local growing,

    including an active Employees Garden

    featuring many varieties of heirloom toma-toes, fig trees, herb garden and other such

    delights. We source our grapes entirely from

    the Central Coast, says Churchill who trans-

    ferred to Wild Horse from the Franciscan

    Winery also owned by Constellation. We

    want to maintain that focus and so our wines

    come from the Santa Maria Valley as well as

    places like Bien Nacido vineyard and even the

    Lime Kiln region in San Benito County.

    Wild Horses tasting room pays homage to

    its namesake keeping a southwestern theme

    with a rugged look, a wooden bar and, of

    course, a friendly staff of wine pourers to help

    customers. Its still a pretty small room

    considering the size of the winery, says

    Churchill. But we can get to everyone that

    way. Its cozy, she says.

    Churchill isnt the only new face at Wild

    Horse. Just last summer, Clay Brock, formerly

    of Zaca Mesa among many others, including

    Edna Valley, came to Wild Horse to become

    Director of Winemaking. It was vete

    Paso Robles Wine

    Country seems to be in thenews quite a bit these days.

    With mentions in national

    publications like Bon

    Appetit, Everyday with

    Rachel Ray, Outsides Go

    Magazine and the New York

    Times, its no wonder that Paso Robles Wine Country is on the tip

    of everyones collective conversational palate. Although its only

    now being discovered by many, Paso Robless Wine Country

    history dates back to the early 1900s when Zinfandel was estab-

    lishing its place as Californias heritage variety.

    In 1992 the Paso Robles wine region began a small celebration

    in recognition of Zinfandel. These wines from Paso Robles were

    quickly becoming popular as the area was perceived as a prime

    growing region. Fast forward seventeen years into 2009 and the

    area is set to celebrate the 17th Annual Paso Robles Zinfandel

    Festival and Wine Country Auction. Over the years this event has

    funds to benefit the viney

    worker community.

    Zin Fest, as its affectionately called, will take place on March

    20-22. The event weekend begins with a new component on

    Friday afternoon called RESERVE. This enticing pre-party tak

    place from 4 to 6 p.m. and is an exploration into the exceptiona

    qualities of Zinfandel by providing event goers a taste of Reserve

    and Barrel Sample Zinfandel and Zinfandel blend wines.

    Saturday, March 21, the festivities continue with the Wine

    Country Auction followed by the marquee Zinfandel Festival

    Grand Tasting. The Wine Country Auction is an opportunity fo

    festival goers to bid on unique auction lots that are not available

    through regular retail channels. The areas growers, winemakers

    and hospitality businesses come together to create packages that

    are unique to the Wine Country Auction. Proceeds raised at the

    Wine Country Auction are gifted back to the community in

    support of causes benefiting health, education and community

    services for the vineyard worker population. The Wine Country

    Auction begins at 4:30 p.m. and concludes just in time for themain event The Grand Tasting at 7 p.m.

    The Zinfandel Festival Grand Tasting brings together more th

    40 Paso Robles producers in a walk-around tasting event where

    attendees sample more than 100 Zinfandel and Zinfandel blend

    wines. This popular element of the festival suggests having som

    new surprises for 2009 along with the guarantee of great wines

    bites of the areas exceptional cuisine. The three elements of the

    Zinfandel Festival weekend take place at the Paso Robles event

    center, but the festivities do not end there. Look for more than

    wineries to hold their own individual events throughout the

    weekend, including Sunday when they open their doors for ma

    With its spectacular sculpture gardens featuring larger-thanbronze and granite works that include a prancing horse and

    prowling feline, the Sculpterra Winery Tasting Room quickly grabb

    We wanted to bring something new to the area by combin

    outdoor art and the vineyard, said Paul Frankel, the assistant wi

    maker and son of owner Dr. Warren Frankel.

    Although the winery is only a year old, the Frankel family

    owned the gorgeous 90-acre ranch in the Linne Valley east of P

    Robles for nearly 30 years. A pistachio orchard was planted before

    vineyards, and bowls of the estate-grown nuts are on the tast

    rooms attractive stained concrete bar.

    The warmly-decorated tasting room, featuring a number of min

    ture sculptures that are each for sale, was once a welding shop its

    African mahogany double doors provide access to the barrel roo

    while there is plenty of wood and stone throughout the room. La

    windows provide glimpses of an outdoor picnic area, which inclu

    a 10-ton granite sculpture of a stalking cat.

    While the sculpture gardens are worthy of a visit by themselv

    Sculpterras wines are also turning heads.

    Cabernet Sauvignon is its flagship varietal, said the youn

    Frankel, with both the 2005 and 2006 vintages capturing g

    medals. Besides the Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate vineyards inclu

    plantings of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, PeSirah and Viognier.

    Winemaker Shannon ONeill has also crafted a pair of aw

    winning red blends, Statuesque and Maquette, a French w

    which translated means little statue.

    The Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden is at 5125 Lin

    Road just east of Paso Robles. The tasting room is open Thursd

    Benjamin Silvers wines are a

    bit of a revelation. In a fast-paced, enjoy-now, dont-

    wait society, Silvers wines are

    made for the long haul and he

    likes it that way. I like age on my

    wines, says Silver. I try to put

    some age on them and its neat to

    see them get better and better.

    Getting better is what Silvers

    wines have been doing since he

    began making them. With a still

    small 1800-case annual produc-

    tion, Silver focuses on quality,hand-crafted, vineyard-select

    wines. Im working with a lot of

    new fruit sources now and its

    working out pretty well, Silver

    says. Sourcing Pinot Noir from

    Kevin Merrillss Premiere Vine-

    yard and Grenache Blanc and

    Cabernet Sauvignon from Fess

    Parkers Camp 4 among others,

    Silver is convinced that his fruit

    sources are better than ever. Among one of his greatest

    triumphs of late, though, is

    getting his wines into his home

    state of Massachusetts. Born and

    raised in the Bay State and origi-

    nally harboring a desire to be a

    veterinarian, Silver got the wine

    bug early and headed west toCalifornia. I sent some of our 04

    Pinot Noir and Mourvedre-Syrah

    blend to my brother in Rhode

    Island and he took them to a

    restaurant up in Boston called

    Lespalier. They tried them and

    contacted their distributor who

    contacted me and Ive got a pres-

    ence there, now, says Silver.

    That was a lot of fun. The

    distributor in Massachusetts was

    so impressed with Silvers winethat he pre-sold a lot of the wine

    before he ordered it.

    This years harvest was a bit

    smaller than most, but Silver says

    there are bright spots. The

    Sangiovese I got from Tepesque

    Vineyard in northern Santa

    Barbara County is really some-

    thing, says Silver. Its a very

    high quality vintage.

    Benjamins wines always sellout when I have them, says Don

    ONeill owner of Wine Country

    wine shop in Los Olivos. Hes a

    fine winemaker and hes good at

    what he does, he added.

    Silver has known ONeill since

    1994 when the two worked at

    Zaca Mesa together. I try tomake some of my library wines

    available to him, says Silver. He

    really does move wine over there

    when they get a lot of people in.

    Recently moving all of his

    production to Santa Barbara in a

    smaller and independent facility,

    Silver has put a lot of effort into

    getting his wines more widely

    known. Silver Wines are even

    Columbia and Alberta as well asCalifornia, and parts of the East

    Coast.

    Already considered cyclings most important and successful road

    race in the United States, the 2009 Amgen Tour of California will be

    expanded to cover more than 800 miles over nine days. The events

    fourth running is scheduled for February 14-22. Traveling almost the

    entire length of California, the race will begin in the states capital,

    Sacramento, and end in San Diego County for the first time.

    In preparation for the highly anticipated return of the Amgen Tour

    of California professional cycling road race in February, a specially

    developed classroom curriculum has been developed for fourth-

    through sixth-grade students. The educational handbook will be

    distributed to schools in the 16 California cities that will host the 2009

    Amgen Tour of California.

    Through interactive lessons, the 2009 educational handbook will

    teach students about the history of cycling and includes bike safety and

    maintenance tips. Provided to more than 60,000 students, the booklet

    also provides information about the State of California, includingtargeted lesson plans that use cycling as a means to teach core subjects.

    Classroom activities, such as weather charting and word searches,

    allow educators to reach students with engaging material developed

    specifically to supplement the curriculum of students in grades four

    through six. The handbook also includes a lesson on world geography,

    as it relates to cyclists that have participated in the race, math, science

    and a cycling glossary to help students better understand the intrica-

    cies of professional cycling.

    Beginning with 250 pounds of

    Chardonnay hand harvested from

    Mikes parents vineyards in Lodi,

    California, they fermented their

    first 18 gallons of wine. Over the

    next four years they carefully

    selected additional wine grape

    sources, increased their knowl-

    edge of winemaking, refined their

    wine style, expanded grape vari-eties and increased production.

    This culminated with the opening

    of a public tasting room in

    October 2007.

    Their 2300-square-feet pro-

    duction, cellaring and wine

    tasting facility is open each

    weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    and other times by appointment.Plan a visit to the tasting room to

    sample their current release

    wines and tour the winery to see

    whats coming soon.
