Reactions 479 - 27 Nov 1993 Carbamazepine Transient thrombocytopenia while continuing treatment: case report Thrombocytopenia developed in a 20-year-old woman after she received carbamazepine 400 mg/day for 2 weeks for behavioural and affective disturbances. One week later, despite toxic carbamazepine levels (14.2 µg/ml), the patient’s platelet count had normalised. Carbamazepine was discontinued and lithium introduced. The woman’s platelet count remained within normal range. Author comment: ‘This [case report] suggests that carbamazepine-induced thrombocytopenia may be transient in some patients.’ Terao T.
