Carbamazepine Eosinophilia: incidence study
653 patients receiving carbamazepine for various reasons, mostly epilepsy, had white blood cell and differential counts every 2 months,
36 patients (5,5%) aged 2-50 (mean 18,6) years and comprising 22 females and 14 males, developed eosinophilia (> 7% leucocytes, mean 9.2%), Carbamazepine had been taken for 3-48 (mean 14,3) months with blood concentrations of 3-12 (mean 7,4) "g/ml. There were no concomitant medical conditions in these patients which could account for the high eosinophil count. The differential count resolved in 5 patients but remained high in the rest.
'Our study suggests that eosinophilia occurs in about 1 in 20 patients undergoing long-term carbamazepine treatment.' De Marco p, Melchior; G. Annals of Neurology 20: 274, Aug 1986
