Phocomelia and club foot in a newborn followingin utero exposure: case report
A male neonate was born with bilateral phocomelia andclub foot following in utero exposure to carbamazepine.
The baby’s mother, who was 29-years-old, had beenreceiving carbamazepine 800 mg/day for epilepsythroughout pregnancy [parental route not stated], and gavebirth to a male baby at 40 weeks gestation. The babypresented at age 26 days with a diagnosis of congenitalanomaly. Examination revealed four short and deformedlimbs, with the absence of both thumbs, low-set ears,bilateral pes equinovarus, a mid-line facial haemangioma,high palate and restricted hip movement. X-ray revealedabsence of the radius and ulna in both arm extremities, ashortened tibia and absent fibulae. The baby wassubsequently discharged [outcome not stated].
