Reactions 1398 - 21 Apr 2012 S Carbamazepine Thrombocytopenia: case report A 21-year-old woman developed thrombocytopenia following treatment with carbamazepine [therapeutic indication not stated]. The woman, who had a history of bipolar disorder, presented with a 4-day history of pyrexia, significant thrombocytopenia and petechial rash. Examination revealed a petechial rash on her lower legs. Tests showed the following values: platelet count of 4 K/µL, Hg 13.1 mg/dL and WBC count of 3 K/µL. Prednisone and ceftriaxone were initiated. The woman reported that she was receiving carbamazepine 200mg twice daily [route not stated], which had been administered for the past month. Carbamazepine was withdrawn, and platelets were transfused. Her platelet increased to 46 K/µL, yet subsequently dropped to 12 K/µL. Over the next few days, her platelet count reached 161 K/µL.
