The east coast welcomes the Mahamonsoon which blows rom October to January, bringing rain to the North andEast, while the dry season is rom May to September. The North and East arecomparatively dry, with around 1000mm o rain annually. From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern hal, while the dry seasonhere lasts rom December to March. The southwest has the highest rainall – up to4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and Novemberwhen rain can occur in many parts o the island. Climatically speaking, the driest

The average annual temperature in Sri Lanka ranges rom 28 to 32oC. The meantemperature varies rom a chilly low o 16ºC in Nuwara - Eliya in the CentralHighlands, where even rosting might occur or several days in the winter, to a higho 32oC in Trincomalee on the Northeast Coast. The coastal areas are cooled bysea breezes year around.
