This weekend at the end of Mass we will hear from our own Felipe Campos, CSC who will talk to us about the important work of Holy Cross that takes place in Monterrey, Mexico. As you know Felipe did what we call a “pastoral year” at La Luz parish. A pastoral year is like what Fr. Brian Kennedy did at St. Ignatius a few years ago. It is when a seminarian takes a year away from studies and gets involved in full time ministry with a Holy Cross community. Felipe will be sort of filling in for the priest from La Luz that would normally come up for the weekend that we call Mission Appeal Weekend. With all the Covid19 travel restrictions the trip was not feasible at this time. You will have the opportunity to contribute to this important work of Holy Cross by contributing at Mass, online, dropping off your donation or through your prayer. Please be generous as the ministry there is greatly dependent on this appeal.

A couple of “save the dates”… we will have Vespers (sung Evening Prayer) with Adoration next Friday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the church and it will also be streamed. This special liturgy will be in celebration and support of Deacon Zach and Felipe. As you know on September 5th Zach will become Father Zach and Felipe will become Deacon Felipe at Notre Dame. So please consider joining us in person or online. We will also pray for their classmates as well as for an increase in vocations to the Congregation and Family of Holy Cross. Isaac Garcia our Director of Adult Evangelization and Catechesis will offer a reflection.

I encourage you as well to mark your calendars for the ordination Mass on the 5th it, too, will be live streamed and we will get that information to you via social media and bulletin announcements soon. As important and joyful as ordinations are in Holy Cross something even more important takes place the day before… on September 4th also at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and that is Final Profession. Felipe and 4 classmates will make their final vows and, as last year with Deacon Zach class, one will be making his final vows as a Holy Cross Brother… Br. Pablo Quan, CSC. The Brothers vocation is so important to us in Holy Cross and especially here in Central Texas where we are blessed to have so many Holy Cross Brothers affiliated with our parish and St. Edward’s University. The Final Vow liturgy will also be live streamed, and we will get that information to you along with the ordination link.

So lots is happening and going on! Please join us virtually or in person as we celebrate Holy Cross and these young men who are our future! Keep praying for our school kids and teachers and staff who are now virtually learning and growing in Christ! Our kids will be invited back to campus on September 8th and also have the option to continue with their distance learning. Keep the faith and be sure to keep safe!

SCRIPTURE READINGS AND MASS INTENTIONS

WORSHIP AND SACRED MUSICDR. JOHN J. HOFFMAN, DIRECTOR • [email protected]

CONCERNED AND CAUTIOUS CATHOLICSHere are a few ideas and remarks from others:

If you are vulnerable and worried about contagion, it is OK to be cautious.

Mass on a screen or a prayer in your heart is not the same as being present at the Eucharist. Mass is about community, not spectators. Flesh and blood come together to share the flesh and blood of Jesus.

Pope Francis said the pandemic created a difficult situation to which the church responded. “But the idea of the church is always with the people and with the sacraments — always,” he stressed. It is communal, not virtual.

Parishes are all are hurting right now. Even some Catholic schools have

closed and many more are in danger of closing. If you have a job or have a steady income, consider upping your gift. If you give infrequently or never, consider giving now. No matter what your current situation is right now, the parish is praying for you.

A bishop said recently that “we must maintain our capacity to tell our story.” The church has responded with patience, generosity, and even heroism during this pandemic. That is the story we must be proud to tell today.

Come to Mass and celebrate with thankful hearts for all the good God has done for us.
