CREATION OF THE WORLD
Genesis 1-2
Long ago, there was only God, and the darkness was all around.God created the light to separate the night from the day. He alsomade the earth and divided it into seas, oceans and lands. Hemade all of the plants and trees, the sky lled with stars, and thesun and the moon to mark the change between day and night. He
lled the waters with sh of different sizes, and he lled the skywith birds of many shapes and colors. The world was full of beau-ty, and the Lord God thought it was the best place for animals to
live. He made many creatures, large and small. The animals had no names yet, and there
were very few, but each one of themhad plenty of food to eat.

NOAHS ARK
Genesis 6-7
A long time passed. The people did not obey the Lord God. Mansintentions were evil all the time. God saw it all, and was very sad.He felt the pain that people caused each other. He regretted thatHe had made them. God decided to send a huge ood and take thelives that He had given them. He promised to save only one man
and his family, Noah. Only Noah obeyed Him. God told Noah tobuild a big boat the ark and to bring his family and a pair ofanimals from each kind, and to ll the boat with food.
Noah trusted God completely and did exactly as God had toldhim. He went into the ark with his family. After them the ani-mals, birds and many other living beings came. Then, God closedthe door of the ark, and sent a great rain. It rained for a very, verylong time

THE GREAT FLOOD
Genesis 7-8
The rain fell as if a whole sea was poured out of the sky. For fortydays and forty nights, they heard rain pouring down, hitting theroof of the ark. The ood covered all the lands, and the people andanimals drowned. Noah, his family and the animals were savedin the ark, and nally God showed His mercy by sending a wind
that began to dry the land. One night, Noah woke up and saw that although the waves
were pounding at the ark, the sound of rain was gone. It stoppedraining at last! He felt thankful to God for saving them. Even theanimals expressed a great joy.
Noah and his family turned to God in thanksgiving. The Lordpromised that He would never again destroy His creatures. Godplaced a rainbow of many colors in the sky as a sign of that prom-ise.

JOSEPHS DREAMS
Genesis 37
Esau forgave his brother. Jacob returned to his fathers land.
Rachel, Jacobs beloved wife, died during their journey whilegiving birth to Benjamin. She also left behind Joseph. Jacob lovedRachels sons, Joseph and Benjamin, more than his ten othersons.
After their return, they all lived together in their parents home. One day, Jacob made a coat for Joseph. The boy was very happy.
When his brothers saw the robe, they became very angry.
One night, had a very strange dream and wanted to tell some-
body about it right away. He went to his brothers, and although
they did not like Joseph, they listened to him because he told them
interesting things. He dreamed about sheaves in the eld. Hissheaf was standing straight up while his brothers sheaves were
all around it and bowing down to it. The story made the brothers
angry. They accused Joseph of thinking that he was better than
them. After a few days, the boy had another dream. Again, he toldhis brothers about it. He dreamed about the sun, the moon and
eleven stars bowing down before him. The brothers were very an-
gry again. Their father also said that Joseph was too proud.

JOSEPH IN SLAVERY
Genesis 37, 39
Judah, one of Josephs brothers, came up with a terrible idea to
sell him to some men traveling to Egypt. They pulled Joseph out
of the well and sold him for twenty pieces of silver.
Then, they dipped his coat in goats blood, and showed it to
their father, saying that a wild animal ate Joseph.
Even during his long trip, Joseph remembered God and prayedto Him in the heat of the sun. He did not know what would hap-
pen to him in Egypt, but he knew one important thing wherever
he went, the Lord would always be close to him.
When they arrived, the men sold Joseph at the slave market.
His new master, Potiphar, was a wealthy and righteous man. Godlooked after Joseph. He worked hard as Potiphars slave he kepthis house clean, worked in the elds, and helped with the prepar-ing of the food. He tried to do everything as best as he could to
please the Lord God most of all. In a short time, Potiphar devel -
oped such great trust for Joseph, that he put him in charge of allhis possessions. The only thing he had to do for himself was to
decide what he wanted to eat.

PHARAOHS DREAMS
Genesis 41
The chief cup-bearer still served at Pharaohs court. He remem -bered a promise he made to Joseph. He had promised he would
tell Pharaoh about him. Finally, he had a good opportunity to dothat. He told Pharaoh that he knows a man who could explain hisdreams. The guards were sent to the prison.
Joseph put on some clean clothes, and went to see the Pharaoh.Joseph knew only God could help him understand those dreams.
Pharaoh dreamed that he stood on the bank of the Nile and sevenfat cows came out of the river. After them, seven thin cows came
out of water and ate the fat ones. However, the thin cows were
still as thin as before. In another dream, he saw seven full ears
of corn. Then, seven other empty ears which were dried by the
wind and swallowed up the full ones. Pharaoh waited for Josephswords. Joseph prayed to God for wisdom, and the Lord did not fail
him. Both dreams showed the same thing: there would be seven
years of plenty and after that, seven years of great famine. It allwould happen very soon

JOSEPH, THE EGYPTIAN LEADER
Genesis 41-42
Joseph advised Pharaoh to appoint someone to care for the foodin all of Egypt, and store it for the time of famine. Pharaoh sawthat God cared for Joseph and helped him to see things that oth-
ers did not know. He decided to trust him with that task. Joseph
became the most important person in the whole country, right
after Pharaoh, and was given a new name. It meant, God speaks,He is alive, because God spoke through Joseph.
The dreams came true in the following years. After seven years
of plenty, the famine came. Egypt was the only country where
there was plenty of food. Joseph lled all the storehouses withfood and even built new ones.
The famine also reached the land of Canaan. Josephs father,
brothers and their families suffered from hunger. They decided to
go to Egypt to buy some food for their children.

who was in charge of selling food. It was Joseph, but his broth-
ers did not know it was him, because he looked like an Egyptian.
Joseph recognized his brothers, but kept it to himself. He tested
them by saying they were spies. They were very surprised by this
accusation. They claimed to be one family, with their youngest
brother left at home. Joseph wanted proof. They were to bring
Benjamin to him, and Simeon stayed in Egypt as a hostage. Be-fore they left for home, Joseph put them in prison for three days.
After that, the brothers went home.
On their way back, they found that the
money they paid for
the food was given
back to them.
They were
scared, and
thought that the Egyptian would believe they stole the money. At
home, they told Jacob everything. They asked if they could take
Benjamin to Egypt, but the father refused. He was afraid to loseanother son.

THE RESCUE OF MOSES
Exodus 1-2, 4, 6
Josephs family settled in Egypt. As the years passed, his family
became so big, that they were called Israelites or Hebrews.
Four hundred years later, an evil Pharaoh ruled in Egypt whohated the Israelites. He turned them into slaves, and ordered the
Hebrew children to be killed right after birth. One mother wanted
to save her child. Every night, she prayed with her family to Godfor His help. Finally, she found an answer. She wove a basket
shaped like a little boat wrapped her son in a cloth, and carefully
placed the basket on the water.
God answered her prayers, because He had his own plans for
the boy. The basket oated down the river. The Pharaohs daugh-ter noticed it, and when she took the basket out of the water,
she saw a sweet Hebrew boy in it. The child was hungry, and he
was crying. Just then, the boys sister, Miriam, appeared. She
suggested giving the boy to a woman that could nurse the child.
In this way, the boy was returned to his mother, and the whole
family loved him and cared for him. Their hearts were thankful
to God for His help.

THE PASSOVER NIGHT
Exodus 12
The Israelites were very afraid for their lives. Moses calmed them
down by saying that God cared for them. They only had to do
what He commanded.
The night of the last plague was called The Passover becausethe Lord passed over the people of Israel and did them no harm.
They were to remember that night forever and pass this on forgenerations to come.
During the Passover night, the Israelites were to eat bread andlamb and to mark the doors of their houses with its blood. The
Lord, as He would pass through Egypt, would pass over houses
marked in this way. That night, each Egyptian family mourned
their dead sons. The Israelites waited. They knew they were safe
because they were people chosen by God.
Even in Pharaohs house, there was sadness. His rst-bornson died. Pharaoh knew that this would not have happened if hehad listened to Moses and Aaron. Although it was still night, he
called them and said that all the Israelites were free. The time
they waited for had nally arrived. They gathered their belong-ings and left Egypt. They left for the land that God had promised
them.

THE GOLDEN CALF
Exodus 32
When Moses was about to come down from Mount Sinai, the Most
High told him that the people in the camp had quickly turned
away from God and were doing terrible acts.
The people waited a long time for Moses return, and when he
was late, they thought he was dead. They did not trust God. They
forgot about His promises and all the things He had already done
for them. They began trusting in themselves and asked Aaron,
Moses brother, to give them a new god. Aaron melted all of the
gold jewelry that the Israelites brought to him and made a falsegod that looked like a calf. The people kneeled down before the
calf and treated it as their god.
The Lord was very angry with them. He wanted to destroy the
whole chosen nation and create a new one. Moses again asked
God for mercy for his people.
As Moses was climbing down the mountain, he heard noise
coming from the camp at the base of the mountain. The people
were dancing, singing and kneeling down to the golden calf. Mo-
ses saw the false god. He brought the stones for them, but when he
reached the camp, he became very angry at the Israelites and in
anger threw the stones down. The stones were broken into small
pieces. Moses punished the people for their actions and returned
to the mountain. He knew that the Israelites had let God down
and was very disappointed in them.

MOSES SAYS GOODBYE
Deuteronomy 20, 29, 31, 34
Moses was over hundred years old when, for the last time, he
called all the Israelites to come to him. He felt his life would end
soon. He wanted each one of them to choose life over death. They
all chose life. Then, Moses told them that God would give them
plenty of water, food and land, and many children if they obeyed
His laws. If they forget about God, and that He had freed them
from slavery, they will die. The people agreed. Moses loved the
Israelites very much, although he had had many problems with
them.
Before his death, Moses wrote a song about Gods love andgreatness. It was his gift to the chosen nation. Then, he asked
God for a chance to see the Promised Land, even if for a minute. He climbed Mount Nebo, and from its top, he saw the Jordan Riv-er, and the land of Canaan behind it. He looked in this direction
for many hours. The sight had captured his heart. Moses thanked
God, and then closed his eyes forever. He died as a strong man,
wise and of clear mind, and God chose to bury him in a valley next
to the mountain.

SPIES IN JERICHO
Joshua 1-2
After Moses death, Joshua became the leader of the Chosen Na-tion. The Israelites got to the Jordan River, near Canaan, and
Joshua called two of his best men to a meeting. He had a special
mission for them as spies. They were to go into Jericho and see
how strong the walls of the city were, to nd out if the people of
Jericho were prepared to ght, to nd out how many people therewere, and also to see what kinds of weapons they used. After theirreturn, they were to report it all to Joshua.
The spies went on their way. There were high, thick walls
around the city, and guards were standing by the walls. The Is-
raelites decided to get closer, but they got too close. The guards
realized they were Israelites and tried to catch them. The spies
tried to escape. They saw a woman looking out a window. She
pointed them to a door. This is how Joshuas men found safety in
her house.

REFUGE FOR SPIES
Joshua 2
The Israelite spies looked around the house. In the room, they
saw a woman. She offered to help them, so she led them to the
roof of the house and pointed out a hiding place. They were to
wait there until the evening.
When the king of Jericho learned about the Israelites, he or-
dered the soldiers to search the whole city. They checked every-where.. The soldiers came to the house of the woman that had
helped the Israelites, but she said that they had already left. The
soldiers started the chase.
The woman advised the Israelites to run away immediately.
They decided to leave her house. The woman knew the people of
Israel very well and saw that they were blessed by God. All of the
people in Jericho were afraid of them. The woman promised to
help them escape. She had only one condition: she wanted themto protect and do no harm to her and her family when they come

THE SPIES ESCAPE
Joshua 2
The Israelite spies climbed the stairs to a small
room where they would hide. There was a window
facing the outside of the city walls. The woman
gave them a rope. They could climb down and es-
cape from Jericho. But, rst they asked her name.
Her name was Rahab. They agreed that when theIsraelites came to the city, she would tie a scarlet
cord to her window and she would not be harmed.
But, if she betrayed the men, she would die. Themen opened the window, fastened the rope, and
slowly climbed down. They disappeared in the
darkness. Rahab knew that if God wanted the
Israelites to capture Jericho, it would surely
happen.
After three days, when the spies made sure
they were safe, they returned to the camp
and told Joshua everything. They wondered
if Rahabs words were true, and if the people
of Jericho were really afraid of the Israelites.
If it were true, capturing the city would be
very easy. Joshua and the men prayed to
God thanking Him for His help. Joshua
decided that in a few days the Israelites
would attack Jericho and conquer it. A
smile appeared on his face. Joshua be-
lieved that God was with them, and
they would soon enter the PromisedLand.

a chest to carry the stones with the commandments, bread, and
Moses rod. It was called the Ark of the Covenant.
Joshua ordered the priests to carry the Ark through the Jordan
River. As soon as their feet touched the water, the waves sepa-
rated, and a dry path appeared. They walked slowly through themiddle of the dry river bed. Joshua called all the people to follow
them. That day, the Chosen Nation crossed the Jordan River on
dry ground.
The crossing took a whole day. The land of Canaan was on the

The next day, the army formed a line. In the front were the

the soldiers. The people of Jericho saw the army, and were afraid. They
feared for their lives, because they knew God was on the side of
the Israelites.
However, the Israelites did not attack the city, but marched
around the city walls in silence. The people in Jericho could not
understand what was happening. Hundreds of thousands of sol-
diers marched in silence. The only sound that could be heard was
the sound of the musical instruments played by the priests.
They marched around the Jericho for six days, and on the sev-
enth day, they marched around the city seven times. After the
seventh time, they called as loud as they could, and the walls of
Jericho came down. God performed another great miracle. The Is-

SAMSONS DEATH
Judges 16
The Philistines were very happy that nally, after twenty years, they captured Samson. All it took was to cut his hair! Without hisstrength, he became like a child. The Philistines were very cruelto Samson. They cut out his eyes and locked him in prison. It wasimpossible for Samson to escape.
After some time, he felt that his hair started to grow back again, and the Lord was giving him back his strength, although he was
completely blind. He prayed to God that one day he could avenge
the Philistines for the harm they had done to him.Every month, Samson was becoming stronger. One day, the Phi-
listines held a great feast. They brought Samson out to mock him. When Samson heard this, he asked the boy who led him to allowhim to stand close to the pillars supporting the whole building.
Samson felt the stone under his hands and cried out to God to givehim back his strength, even for a very short moment. He wanted to
take out his anger on the Philistines and free the Israelites.
The Lord heard Samsons cry and gave him His Spirit. Samsonhad such great strength, that he easily moved the great pillars

HANNAHS PRAYER
1 Samuel 1-2
Hannah went to the tabernacle a
building where the priests brought
sacrices to God. She was verysad. She did not know what todo. Nothing could bring her joy.
She felt very unhappy. She kneltdown and buried her face in her
hands. She prayed quietly andtears owed down her face. Shetold God how much she wanted to
have a child. She promised that ifthe Lord blessed her with a son, she
would give him back to to God for all
the days of his life.
When Hanna prayed, Eli, the
priest, watched her. He saw she
was praying, although he couldnot hear her words. Hannahs eyes
were red from crying.
Not many Israelites came to the
sanctuary to pray, but those who
did always prayed aloud. That is
why the priest thought the wom-
an had drunk too much wine.
When he came closer, he saw
that Hannah was crying. He
blessed her, so that her requeststo God could be fullled. Han-nah thanked him and left. She im-mediately felt that a great weight had
been lifted from her heart. She trustedGod completely. She let God decide whethershe should have a child. She knew one thing whatever God decides, it would be the best for her
and her husband. God knows everything the best!

THE CALL OF SAMUEL
1 Samuel 2-3
Samuel was happy under Eli the priests care. The old man treat-ed him like his own son. He was happy that the boy loved God,
and wanted to serve Him.
Every year, Hannah and Elkanah visited Samuel, and gavehim clothes. He remembered his parents every time he put them
on. He took the separation from his parents with courage.
The boy was preparing to become a priest, just like Eli. He
helped the old man in the tabernacle, and made sure all the lamps
stayed lit. He also learned about all kinds of sacrices given toGod, and about prayer, which is talking with the Lord. He won-
dered why he had not heard any answers.
One night, when Samuel was asleep, he heard a voice call hisname. The boy thought that it was Eli was calling for him. He ran
to the old man, but it was not him. The priest told Samuel to goback to bed. The boy heard his name called two more times. Eli
thought that God was calling Samuel, so he told the boy to answer
next time, Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening. Samueldid as Eli instructed him. From that time on, the Lord would
speak to and through Samuel. In the morning, the boy told the old priest everything. For the
rst time, Samuel had heard the voice of God.

John 5
One day, Jesus went up to a small pool of water in Jerusalem
called the Pool of Bethesda. Stairs led to it, and many sick peo-
ple lay there. They all waited for an angel who came down from
heaven, and stirred up the water. The one who then entered the
water rst was immediately healed.Among the sick, there was a man who had waited for somebody
to help him to enter the water for thirty-eight years. He was not
able to do it on his own.
Jesus saw his suffering, and healed him. The man felt the
strength returning him, and then stood up, and began to walk!
He was happy that after so many years he could enjoy life again.

THE CHOOSING OF THE TWELVE
Matthew 10; Mark 3; Luke 6
After Jesus had healed many sick people, He went up a high
mountain to pray to His Father.
In the morning, He called all of His disciples, and chose twelve
from among them, and called them the apostles. From that time
on, they were to be His special helpers. The apostles were to be
close to Jesus, so they could learn His teachings, and pass it on to
others after He goes to heaven.
Jesus chose Peter, James and John, who just like Andrew, were
shermen, then Matthew and Simon, and Philip and Bartholom-ew, Thomas, the other James, Thaddeus and Judas Iscariot.
Then, He gave them a special mission. He sent the Twelve to
heal the sick, cleanse lepers and free those possessed by evil spir-its just as He did. He taught them not to bring anything with
them for their way, nor to accept any money. He wanted them to
learn to trust God, even in the most difcult times. In this way, Jesus prepared the apostles for their new work,
when He would no longer be with them. They were to preach the
Good News about salvation.

One day, Jesus spoke to the crowds from a mountainside. He ex-
plained what was most important in His teaching. His speech was
later called the Sermon on the Mount.Jesus spoke about true happiness, which was neither in wealth
nor power. People who are truly happy are those, who totally rely
on God. Those who gathered around Jesus had never heard such
teaching.
The common people were very surprised by His words. They
felt loved by God. Jesus said they were the salt of the earth! It
meant that the common people make the world a better place.
When you meet them, life becomes better, just like food becomesbetter because of salt. Jesus also said they were like the light that

shown to the world. Nobody should be afraid to live and behave as
Jesus taught. Everyone can show his or her love for God by loving
other people.

One night, Simon the Pharisee, invited Jesus to his house for a
feast. The Pharisees were leaders in the church. Only a few of
them liked Jesus. Others were angry at Him because so many
people wanted to listen to Him. Jesus was always telling people
about forgiveness, and the great love of God.
During the feast, a woman entered the house. People said thatshe was a sinner, and should have been ashamed for coming. The
woman came to Jesus, knelt at His feet, and began to cry. Her
tears washed Jesus feet, and she dried them with her hair. Thenshe pulled out a small bottle of very expensive oil, usually used
only for very special occasions, and she poured it on Jesus feet. Itwas a sign that she considered Him to be her King.
This made Simon the Pharisee angry. Jesus saw this, and told
him a story about two debtors. One of them owed a lot of money,
the other only a bit. When they could not pay back the money, their debts were cancelled. Which one of them would be more
thankful? Jesus asked the Pharisee.Jesus wanted to show Simon that the many sins of this woman
were forgiven, because she showed Him love. And those, who are
forgiven a little, love a little, too.

Matthew 14, Mark 6; John 6
After Jesus had fed the crowds, He told the apostles to sail to the
other side of the lake. He also told the people to go back home.
Although there were thousands of them, they all obeyed.
In the meantime, Jesus went to a mountainside to pray.
The apostles tried to reach the other side of the lake. It was not
easy. It was getting dark fast, and the wind kept changing. The
storm was about to start...
After the sun had set, the storm grew stronger. The wind shook
the boat, and water was pouring onto the boat. The other side
was still far away. John called out with fear, for he saw a spirit
walking on the water. The apostles were afraid. They ran to the
far corner of the boat, and crowded there. But it was not a ghost.
It was Jesus who was walking by the boat. He came closer, and
said calmly: Be brave, it is I, do not be afraid! The apostles still
looked petried.

Matthew 14
The wind stayed strong, and the water kept lling the boat. Peterknew it was Jesus and came closer to have a better look at Him.
Jesus feet touched the water, but He did not drown. He slowlycame closer to the boat. Peter asked Jesus to come to Him on the
water, and Jesus agreed.
Peter put his feet over the side of the boat and stood on the
water! He did not drown! He took one step, and then another. Hewas walking on water!
When he took his eyes off Jesus and looked away, he saw thegreat waves and became afraid. Instead of trusting Jesus, he be-
gan to doubt. As soon as he gave into his fear, the waves came
over him, and he began to drown. The Lord grabbed hold of his
hand and asked, Why did you doubt, you of little faith? When they got to the boat, the storm calmed down. The apos -
tles watched it all with surprise. They fell at Jesus feet and wor-shipped Him. They realized that Jesus rules even over the forces
of nature.
