Wausau Downtown Airport conference room

Meeting: We gathered in the Conference Room at the Wausau Downtown airport for our meeting at 1:30 after the Wausau Chili Fun Day which was hosted by Bob. A record 48 airplanes and many, many people showed up for Bob’s great chili lunch. The weather was almost perfect,

except there wasn’t enough snow for ski-planes to land, so all the planes that came in were on wheels. Seventeen members of Chapter 640 attended the meeting. First on the agenda was a very interesting presentation by Tom Thomas of the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame on the

history of Wisconsin Air National Guard. The chapter meeting was then called to order by our new president, Bob Mohr at 2:35 pm. Keith Mathews made a motion to approve the December 2012 Treasurer’s report, published in the January issue of the Haymeadow Flyer, and Rick Coe seconded the motion, which passed. There were no Minutes published from the December 2012 meeting, since no real business was conducted. New Members present included John Spangler, Megan Meier and Rachel Rhyner. More information about John and Rachel is below. Bob gave out Chapter Officer Service Awards to last

year’s officers. Keith Mathews received the President’s Award, Bob Wylie, who was not present received the Vice President’s Award, Syd received the Secretary, Treasurer’s and Newsletter Editor’s Award, Dave Conrad and Joe Norris (who was also not present) received Technical Counselor’s Awards, Roger Grahl (not present) received the Web Editor’s Award and Dan Norwood (not present) received the Young Eagle Coordinator Award. Congratulations to all. Those who were not present may pick up their awards from Syd. Monthly Meeting and Activity Schedule:

March Chapter meeting – Syd said he would host the March meeting in his hangar. Dave Conrad is in the process of bringing Chad Jensen, EAA’s Homebuilders Community Manager to the meeting to do a presentation. Date to be announced later. April Chapter meeting – Rick Coe said he would host the April meeting in his hangar. Date to be announced later. April Spot Landing Contest – A Spot Landing Contest will be held at the Wausau Downtown Airport all the month of April. Rules will be published in the March Haymeadow Flyer and at the March Chapter meeting.

May Chapter meeting – This will be held at Don and Katy Winch’s grass strip west of Rudolph on Sunday, May 12. Chapter 640 Air Rally – Dave Conrad described his ideas about an air rally which will increase activity and interest in the chapter and in aviation in general. He proposed a route from Wausau to Antigo to Merrill and back to Wausau on the same weekend as the Balloon Rally. Each pilot would estimate his/her time enroute for the flight, and then fly the route. The actual time would be compared with the estimated time. Planes would not compete with each other. If a plane flies the route faster than the estimate, that plane’s time would be recorded on one list, and the planes that come in equal to or slower than their estimate would be recorded on another list. Awards would be given to the pilots that fly closest to or slower than their estimate. Another award would be given to the fastest plane and to the slowest plane. We would have our July Chapter meeting on the Friday evening of the Balloon Rally in Bob Mohr’s hangar, and members and guests could walk over to the Balloon Rally to buy their dinner. Flying O July Picnic – Terry Oestreich has invited all of us to his Flying O airfield for a summer picnic. This would probably be July 20. Camping on the field will be available. August Chapter meeting – We will again hold our August meeting at the Bob Payzer Memorial Boulder Junction Airport on Musky Day. Jessica Cox – Syd encouraged everyone to come to Jessica’s presentation on Feb. 18 in the big heated hangar at the Wausau Downtown Airport. Syd explained that Jessica has to be barefoot for her presentation, so Bob Mohr suggested that our chapter donate $100 to Wausau Flying Service to help pay for the extra heat for Jessica’s presentation. Rick Coe made a motion to donate $100, seconded by John Spangler. The motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 2:55 pm, with a motion by Rick Coe, seconded by Keith Mathews.

LATE BREAKING NEWS! Our March chapter meeting with EAA’s Chad Jensen will be Monday evening, March 18, 7 pm in Syd’s hangar. Dinner will be provided.

Jessica Cox, the world’s first armless pilot, will speak to the public in the big hangar at the Wausau Downtown airport. Keith Kocourek, of Kocourek Automotive is funding Jessica’s visit to the Wausau area Feb. 18 and 19, where she will speak to the students of Wausau East High School, Newman Catholic High School, Wausau West High School and Mosinee High School. She has consented to do a presentation to the public as well. Jessica, (born 1983 in Arizona) is the world’s first armless pilot, as well as the first armless black-belt in the American Taekwondo Association (she now has two black belts in Taekwondo.) She was born without arms due to a rare birth defect. She earned her Sport Pilot license on October 10, 2008, after three years of training, through an Able Flight scholarship. Jessica now flies a rented Ercoupe. She has not used prosthetic arms since she turned 14. Using her feet as most people use their hands, she is able, among other things, to drive a

car (she has an unrestricted license and drives a car without modifications), to type on a keyboard (25 words per minute) to pump her own gas, and to put in and remove her contact lenses. She is also a certified SCUBA diver. Cox holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Arizona and works as a motivational speaker and has

spoken in 17 different countries. Jessica will be speaking in the large heated hangar just west of the Wausau Downtown Airport Terminal building. Admission price for her presentation? – one or more non-perishable food items, or $1, which will be donated to the Neighbor’s Place in Wausau. To see an Internet video of
