Having Taqwaa of Allaah
Me ~~~ Myself~~~ & IBy Shaykhul Islaam Ibnul Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah
ALLPRAISE ISDUE to Allaah whohas allowed us to once more witness another Eedul-Adhaa as wellas the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjahduring which, due to Allaahs favor
upon us, both the pilgrims and thenon-pilgrims have the opportunity tostrive to reap the rewards of doing`eebaadah therein. As these days cometo an end, we must continue striving toincrease our eemaan (belief) andmaintain taqwaa of Allaah. Regardingthe topic of taqwaaour Noble ShaykhSaalih as-Suhaymee gave the followingadvice:
My advice to you is to have taqwaaofAllaah (i.e. to fear Allaah) - in secret
can be described with is:
I am a slave who sins, makes mis-takes, seeks forgiveness and recog-nizes this.
So regarding the saying of My/Mine
and those statements similar to that is:My sins, my crimes, my humbleness,my depravation and submissiveness.
So regarding the saying of I Possess:
Forgive me for my mistakes and whatI do intentionally, in jest, or in or inseriousness and
I possess all these shortcomings.

Taqwaa of Allaah, in summary, meansthat one does whatever he iscommanded to do, and stays awayfrom everything which he is prohibitedfrom, in the areas of ones `aqeedah(belief), `eebaadah (worship to Allaah) and in his methodology andapproach to practically manifestingand establishing Islaam (ahkaam, aadaab, aqlaaqand manhaj). In all of thishe must have taqwaaof Allaah. Taqwaaof Allaah is the reason (or cause)for every success in this life and the

ITISNARRATEDON the authorityof Ibn `Umar who said, I
was sitting with the Prophet in the masjid in Mina when a manfrom the Ansaar came and a manfrom the Thaqeef, they gave salaamand said, O Messenger of Allaah, wecame to ask you questions.
So the Messenger said, If you want I
can inform you why you came and what youwant to ask, and I will do so, and if youwant I will hold back and you can ask meand I will answer you.
They said, Tell us O Messenger ofAllaah! The man from Thaqeef saidto the Ansaari, Ask. So the Ansaariman said, Inform me O Messengerof Allaah!
it easy for them to solve theirproblems and that is by having
taqwaaof Allaah both in secret and inthe open.
It is not possible to attain taqwaa ofAllaah without seeking to haveknowledge and fiqh (understanding) inthe Deen (Religion) of Allaah .Allaah says in the Quraan, {Allaahbears witness that Laa ilaaha illaHuwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and theangels , and those havingknowledge (also give this witness);
(He always) maintains His creationin justice. Laa ilaaha illa Huwa(none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.} [Aal-Imraan3:18]
(TAQWAA Continued from page 1)
Likewise, He said, {So be afraid ofAllaah; and Allaah teaches you} [al-Baqarah 2:282]
Therefore, the way to achieve taqwaaof Allaah is to have knowledge ofthis Deen. It is obligatory upon you toknow what has been made prohibitedfor you, so that you may stay awayfrom it. You must also know that which Allaah loves and is pleased with so that you may do it, and that which angers Allaah, so that youavoid it. There is no way that this canbe manifested except by having
knowledge. In order for the Muslim to attainbeneficial knowledge and righteousactions he must ask those people whopossess knowledge. They are the
Ulamaa ar-Rabbaaniyeen thosescholars who are known for theirability to cultivate and nurture as wellas for their great knowledge. They arethe ones who do not deviate from thestraight path. They are the MajorScholars the ones who Allaah hascommanded us to return to by Hisstatement, {So ask the people of theReminder if you do not know.} [an-Nahl 16:43, al-Anbiyaa 21:7]
Likewise those are the ones who theProphet commanded us to returnour affairs to, when he said, Verily
knowledge (ilm) is not attained except byseeking it, just as having forbearance (hilm) isnot achieved except by seeking it. [Silsihahas-Saheehah]
The Messenger of Allaah said:You came to me, to ask about leaving yourhouse and aiming for the Bayt-ul-Haraamand the reward for it; about praying tworakah after tawaaf and the reward for it; going between as-Safa and al-Marwa andthe reward for it; your staying the eveningin Mina, and the reward for it; stoning theJamarah and the reward for it; slaughtering
an animal and the reward for it; and thetawaaf of al-Ifaadah.
The man said, I swear by the Onewho sent you with the truth! This iswhat I came to ask you about.
The Prophet said, As for you leav-ing your homes aiming for the Bayt-ul-Haraam: then your she-camel does notplace its foot nor does it raise it except that
Allaah writes for you a reward due to it,and wipes off one of your sins.
As for the two rakah after the tawaaf, thenit is equivalent to freeing a slave from theChildren of Isma`eel. As for your circuitingof as-Safa and al-Marwa, then it is thesame as freeing 70 slaves. As for you stay-ing till the evening in Arafah, then Allaahdescends to the sky of the Duniya and He
boasts about you to the Angels, and says,My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy,so if your sins were equivalent to the amountof sand or the drops of rain or like the foamon the sea I will forgive them. So go forthMy slaves! Having forgiveness and for whator who you have interceded for.

By the Noble Shaykh Abdul Azeez ibn Baaz,
Visiting the Grave
of the Prophet
VISITING THE GRAVE of theProphet is not an obligationnor is it a condition for the
Hajj as some of the common folkthink. However, it is desirable for theone who visits the masjid of theProphet or is near to it.
As for the one who is far fromMadeenah then he should notundertake the journey with theintention of visiting the grave. TheSunnah is to undertake the journey with the intention of visiting themasjid of the Prophet Muhammad .When one arrives there, he can visit thegrave of the Prophet Muhammad and
the grave of the two companions. Thevisitation of his grave and the grave ofthe companions will fall under the visitation of his noble masjid. This is what has been established in theSaheehayn, that the Prophet said,Do not set out on a journey except to threemasaajid: al-Masjid al-Haraam, the masjidof the Messenger and the masjid of al-Aqsa.[Bukhaaree, Muslim]
If setting out on a journey with theintention of visiting his grave or the
grave of someone else was allowed, then he ( ) would have indicated thisto the Ummah and would have guidedthem to its virtues. This is because he was the most sincere of mankind, the most knowledgeable about Allaah, the strongest in fearing Allaah and heindeed articulately conveyed the clearmessage. He pointed out everygoodness to his Ummah and warned
them against every evil, and he warnedagainst undertaking a journey to otherthan the three masaajid. He said, Donot make my grave an eid (this word comes from the verb aada and it connotes anythingwhich one returns to periodically) nor make your houses graves, but invoke blessings onme, for your blessings reach me wherever you
may be.[Saheeh Sunan Abu Dawood]
The position about the permissibilityof setting out on a journey with theintention of visiting the grave of theProphet results in taking the grave asan Eid and leads to what the Prophet warned against and what he fearedfrom excessiveness and laudation. Many of the people have fallen intothis due to their belief in the legality ofjourneying for visiting the grave of the
Prophet
.
It has been proven by the scholars ofhadeeth the likes of Daraqutni, Baihaqi, Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar, and other thanthem that the ahaadeeth used by those who claim that journeying with theintention of visiting the grave of theProphet is allowed have weak chainsand are fabricated. It is not allowed
that one uses these ahaadeeth tocontradict authentic ahaadeeth used assuppor t ing ev idence for theprohibition of journeying to other thanthe three masaajid.
For the reader inshaa Allaah some ofthese fabricated ahaadeeth have beenmentioned in this section as a means ofinforming you of them and warningyou from being misled by them.
1. Whoever performs the Hajj and
did not visit me it is as though hehas shunned me.
2. He who visits me after my deathit is as though he visited meduring my life.
3. He who visits me and the grave ofmy father Ibraaheem in one year, Allaah guarantees the Jannah forhim.
4. He who visited my grave then myin te rces s ion wi l l become
obligatory for him.
From these ahaadeeth and the likesof them, nothing has beenestablished as coming from theProphet .
Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar in At-Talkheessaid, After the majority of thesenarrations have been mentionedallthe chains of this hadeeth are weak.
Al-Haafidh Al-Aqeelee saidNothing is authentic in this
section.
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyah affirmed that all of theseahaadeeth are fabricated and hisknowledge, memory and meticulousresearch into them should sufficeyou.

Question: What is the ruling on a
woman who has yet to fulfill some of
her obligatory fast, but has fasted some
of the virtuous days like the days of
`Arafah and Aashooraa before she
fulfills some of her missed days ofRamadhaan? Benefit us in this matter,
may Allah benefit you.
Answer: What is incumbent is that a
person starts with the obligatory
before the optional. What is legislated
for this woman and others who are yet
to fulfill the days of Ramadhaan is to
start with fulfilling those (fasts) first
before going on to do the voluntary.
If this women fasted the days on
which fasting is legislated, with the
intentions of fulfilling the obligatory
fasts, that would be good (better). She
would have combined between the
reward of fasting that day (optional
day) and released herself from the
fulfillment of the obligatory fasting. As
we have said, what is legislated is that a
person starts with what has been
obligated before they begin with the
optional (acts of worship).
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-
`Uthaymeen
Question: What happens to a woman
who wears the hijaabone day and then
doesnt the next? Is she shunned?
Answer: There are two issues related
to this question. Firstly, this woman
conforming to wearing the hijaab
sometimes and taking it off other
times and secondly, the concept of
hajar(shunning).
Regarding the hijaab, it is obligatory
upon the Muslim woman. To a certain
extent the Muslim woman and the
man also, should feel the importanceof the obligation of wearing the hijaab.
However, there could be many factors
that may cause her to want to refrain
from wearing her hijaab.
In any event, this woman inshaa Allaah
is first of all a Muslim, and inshaa
Allaah she is strong in her eemaan
(belief) and tries to fight against her
desires if she feels some sense of
discarding her hijaab. Sometimes she
may be triumphant and other timesnot. What is obligatory upon us is that
we should help her, assist her, and
encourage her to try to fulfill this
obligation.
As for the issue of shunning; in the
lands of kufr (disbelief) or in a land
where there is great difficulty upon the
Muslims, this is an issue that is not
looked into nor is it considered. This is
because shunning in this situation or
land would be helping the Shaytaan
and it is not befitting for us to assist
the Shaytaan. Rather, it is upon us to
assist a woman like this who at times
experiences weakness of eemaan. We
should assist her, advise her, help her
and encourage her.
Finally, if this woman is encouraged
and she fights within herself to try to
hold on to wearing the hijaab
consistently, then inshaa Allaah she
falls under the ayah wherein Allaah
mentions that He will guide those
who strive for His sake. He says, {As
for those who strive hard in Us
(Our Cause), We will surely guide
them to Our paths (i.e. Allah'sreligion - Islamic Monotheism).
And verily, Allah is with th
Muhsinoon (good-doers).} [Al-

Know Your ScholarsPart 7 of a series based on a lecture from albaseerah.org by Shaykh Ahmed Al-Munayee, Professor
at Imaam Muhammad Islamic University and Lecturer at Al-Masjid Al-Haraam during Hajj.
THE QUALITIES OF the people ofknowledge have been mentioned.
Those who possess these qualities arethe Scholars and they are the ones whoknowledge should be taken from. There is no problem to take from
other than them, but with thecondition that those are from thefollowers of the Scholars whoseattributes have been previouslymentioned.
So, the person who wants to admonishshould be very familiar with what he isspeaking about and familiar with theprinciples of our Deen and itsbranches. This is the least that can besaid about an individual who wants toadmonish and advise. Allaah hasdefined certain limits for the person who wants to pass religious rulings, and He has warned against those whodisregard the l imitat ions andregulations that have been ordained.
As for the person who does notpossess these qualifications, when heopens his mouth it is as though he isspeaking about Allaah and HisMessenger without knowledge as heis actually representing the Book of
Allaah as Ibn Qayyim mentions in oneof his books1. One who examines thebook wou ld unders t and theimportance of the issue and recognizethe mistake of some people in dealing with matters which they are notqualified to deal with in the name ofda`wah, admonition, clarification, rectification, teaching, or commandingwith what is right and forbidding fromwhat is wrong, or from other than that
from matters which Shaytaanbeautifies for them in their heart.
From the effects of this is becomingindulgent in desiring popularity and tobe at the forefront of things. Theperson feels very safe putting himselfat the level of the people ofknowledge, and this is something
which he does not deserve. He placeshimself at the position of the Scholarsat times of dealing with trials andtribulations when in reality he is notqualified to deal with this.
These days many of the people do notdifferentiate between a recitor of theQuraan and one who narrates a storyto the people; or one who warns thepeople and one who reminds them, orbetween the khateeb who gives thekhutbah and one who gives sincere
advice (naseehah ); or the one who is incharge in the Islaamic community andcapable of giving commands to enjointhe right and forbid the wrong and theperson who is deeply involved inresearch.
They do not differentiate betweenthese and likewise they do notdifferentiate between The person who is deeply in
involved in research a student of knowledge
the Scholar who specializes in anarea,
the Faqeeh(jurist) the Jurist who is we l l g rounded in I s l aamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh ) and the Juristwho has mastered Fiqh
a student of knowledge working with hadeeth, experienced inhadeeth, or well grounded inhadeeth
a student of knowledge working with tafseer, experienced in tafseer,or well grounded in tafseer.
Nor do they differentiate between the Mujtahid al-Mutlaq(absolute Mujtahid),the Mujtahid al-Muqayyid(restrictedMujtahid), the Scholar proficient in theIslaamic Sciences at all levels.
You find most of the people calling allof them scholars. What is important isthat each individual should be placedin his proper position. Belittling peopleis oppression, and raising them abovetheir station is also oppression.
For this reason, you find people goingback to du`aat, or those who aresimply callers, or those who admonish,or those only involved in training, orthose who are good at telling stories. They have statements, tapes and the
like available and the people takereligious rulings from themplacingthem all at the same level.
The person who is wise in hiunderstanding knows who to takefrom. How many people dont reallyhave anything to invite you to? Theyclaim to have what they dont possess. It is important, therefore, if you aregoing to take from an individual, thatthat individual is one who has alsotaken from someone who is himselfscholarly, and who is known to havespent some time in acquiringknowledge.

If anything from these ahaadeeth hadbeen established then the Companions would have been the foremosamongst the people in acting in uponthem, explaining them to the Ummahand calling to them. This is becausethey (the Sahaabah) are the best ofmankind after the prophets and themost knowledgeable about whatAllaah has prohibited and what Hehas legislated for His servants. Theyare the most faithful to Allaah andmost sincere to His creation. Sincethere is nothing related from them
concerning this, this indicates that it issomething which is not legislated.
Even if something was authentic fromthem it would necessitate taking thatto mean that the legislated ziyaarah(visit) is that in which setting out on ajourney is not with the intent ofvisiting the grave alone; and this is byreconciling between the ahaadeeth andAllaah knows best.

By the Noble Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-`Uthaymeen,
Doing Udhiyyah on behalf of
the Deceased
Question: Is it recommendedto make the Udhiyyah(sacrifice) on behalf of the
dead, as is the case with the living, even if they (the dead) did notorder with it (the sacrifice), or is ita special worship limited to the
living only, with the exception ofthe deceased who have ordered uswith it?
Answer: What we see is the Udhiyyahis legislated for the living only becausethis is what is reported from theMessenger . It is for the living only, with the exception of the dead if theyentrusted someone to do it for them. Then it should be done on theirbehalf because the dead person hasordered with it from his own wealth,
and his wealth is his to spend as hewishes as long as it is not in disobedi-ence to Allah. So do as he ordered.
As for the living, then he sacrifices onhis behalf, but there is no objection ifhe sacrifices and says this is onbehalf of my household and heintends with that statement the livingand the dead, as is apparent from theactions of the Messenger when heused to say this is on behalfM u h a m m a d , t h e f a m i l y o f
Muhammad and the Ummah ofMuhammad, the apparent meaning isthat it includes the living and thedead.
As for sacrificing only on behalf ofthe dead, then this has not beenrelated on the Prophet . Indeed thedaughters of the Prophet died -three of his daughters died during his
lifetime and he did not sacrifice ontheir behalf; his wife Khadijah diedand she was from the most belovedof his wives yet he did not sacrifice onher behalf, and his uncle Hamzah was martyred, and he did not sacrificeon his behalf.
If this was among the legislatedmatters, then the Messenger wouldhave legalized it for his Ummah eitherby his statement, action, or approval. As none of that happened, it is knownthat it is not legislated.
However, we do not say it isforbidden, or it is an innovation, or itis not allowed, because it is similar toa charity as some of the scholars havecompared it with sadaqah (charity) onbehalf of the dead, and sadaqah onbehalf of the dead has beenconfirmed by the Sunnah.
The Prophet was asked aboutthe fast on the day of Arafah,
whereupon he said,
"It expiates the sins of the precedingyear and the coming year."
And he was asked about fastingon the day of `Aashooraa',
whereupon he said,
"It expiates the sins of the
preceding year."
[Muslim]
As for stoning the Jamaar (the pillars), then for every stone that you throw, it removes abig sin from the deadly sins. As for yourslaughtering, then it is saved for you with your Lord. As for shaving your head, thenthere is a reward for every strand of hair thatyou shaved, and a sin is wiped off by it.
As for you performing tawaaf of the Houseafter all this, then by this time your are per-
forming tawaaf with no sin upon you and an Angel comes and places his hand betweenyour shoulders saying, Perform good deeds forwhat you face of the future for verily your pastsins have been forgiven.

Can families in same house-hold share in Udhiyyah?
Vol. 1 - Issue 11 ~ Nov/Dec 2009 ~ Dhul-Hijjah 1430/Muharram 1431
Abu Ayoob says, We used to, at the
time of the Prophet, have a man make the
sacrifice with one goat for him and for his
household, and people ate. And the
Prophet used to sacrifice with two
goats, one for him and his household
and the other for everyone that
believed in the oneness of Allaah
from his nation. Therefore, one
sacrifice is enough because you are a
family from the same house and if
you sacrifice more then there is no
problem. Shaykh `Abdul `Azeez
ibn Baaz
Question: I have heard that minor
shirk does not remove one from the
fold of Islaam. Is this a consensus
(ijmaa') with the Scholars?
Question: My older brother and I live
in the same house and we are both
married. Is it obligatory for each of us
to make the slaughter/sacrifice
(udhiyyah ), or is one sufficient for the
both of us?
Answer: The Sunnah is to do one
sacrifice for both of you, and it is notobligatory, it is voluntary. The sacrifice
is Sunnah Muakdah (a confirmed
Sunnah). If you slaughter one then you
are a family of one house. You are a
family of one house - one sacrifice is
sufficient. If you slaughter two
individual sacrifices then the blessing is
desired, and all praise is to Allaah.
However, it is not necessary as one is
sufficient.

Answers fromIssue #10
Answer: The manhaj of Ahlus Sunna
wal Jamaa'ah from the Sahaabah, the
Tabieen and the atba-Taabieen, is that
normally a person is not free from
minor shirk, except very rarely; it is riyaa
(showing off). For example, one may
adorn his salaah so that it may be said
that he prays well, or he recites nicely so
that it may be said that his recitation is
good. This is minor shirk.
Accordingly, the `aqeedah of Ahlus
Sunnah wal Jamaa'ahsays this person is
not a disbeliever because of the
statement of Allaah, {Verily, Allaah
forgives not (the sin of) setting up
partners (in worship) with Him, He
forgives whom He wills, sins other
than that.} [An-Nisaa' 4:116]
However, Allaah will either enter him
into the Fire (not permanently), or take
from his good deeds to compensate for
his (minor) shirk. This is the madhabof
Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah.
