Timber resources o� the иsзи ие est1aated at 6.4 m11110n

sq ka w1th timber reserves o� 75 bil110n cubic metres. О! these

reserves about 80% o� а11 иеа covered ьу' �orests апd timber re­

serves (60 bil110n cubic metres) fa11 to the 8hare о! 81ber1a

and the !'и East (for.estry 1n the Eu.ropean Econom1c Соmшunity

There are not many lands suitable for agricultura1 dev�­lopll1ent in Siberia, in spi te о! i ts vast еХРaDЗеа. More deve­loped and rich arable lands о! Western Siberia are an obvi ous ехашрlе о! it: 35% о! the whole territory are swашрs, 30% - со­ni!erous and 1eaf-bearing !orests, 13% - tundra and bush thic­

ket . A t present the developed arable lands exceed 6 5 mil1ion

he ctares in Siberia and the Far East, including 21 million hectares о! pastures, 12 million hectares о! haying lands and 32 mi11ion hectares о! !arming 1ands (20 о! them in Western Siberia), and that makes up alll10st 15% о! the All-Union 80wing area. COBALТ AND NICКEL. The largest amount о! this raw material

reserves and their industrial production is concentrated оп the

magщаtiс deposits о! sulphide copper-nickel o�e о! the Norilsk

type . The deposits о! this region (Norilsk - 1 and 2 , Talnakh­

skoye , Oktyabrskoye ) are located in the Eжtrеше North in 69 ра­

rallel and are the pride о! the Siberians : the unique ores о!

this region give 16 elements to the national economy. Similar

in their origin copper-nickel ore deposits are situated in

Northern Fribaikalye . There are also independent hydrothermal

cobalt-arsenic and cobalt-nickel-arsenic deposits in the north­

-east о! the USSR ( Verkhne-Seymchanskoye) , the West вауan and East Тuva (Khovuaksinskoye ) . А group о! enterprises "Тuva-ko­

balt" is working оп the basis о! the latter .

Cobalt occurs almost everywhere in iron ores о! numerous

aagnetite deposits о! Siberia аа an independent mineral and is

in the crystal lattice о! sulphides w1dely spread in ores . Of an

economic importance is the simultaneous complex output о! ore

when developing а number о! magnetite deposits .

IIINING ТECНNICAL RAVl ШТERIALS . These kinds о! mineral raw

aaterials are widely used in modern technique mainly in their

natural form.

DIAМONDS . Since their larger part in tne world output is

used for technical needs , diamonds are о! the greatest impor­

tance among these raw materials . The occurence о! diamonds оп

the territory о! Yakutia _ав predicted Ьу academician V . S . Sobo­

lev in the late 30а . The first diamond-bearing kimberlite pipe

"Zarnitsa" _ав discovered in Yakutia in 1954. Diamonds are clo­

sely connected with the manifestation о! the so-called kimber­

lite volcanism.

These are specific rocks , occuring in explosion channels ,

having the form о! vertical cylinders with relatively isoD.l.etric

section from the first metres up to 600 m filled with explosive

breccia, sometimes containing diamond crystals from single in­

clusions in зоше kimberlite pipes to industrial concentra�ions

(which is very seldom) in other оnе з . Diamonds are formed at

high pressure and brought from large depths Ьу kimberlite mag­

шаз . The largest Yakutian diamond is 342 . 5 carats ( more than
