Mexic–Arte Museum’s permanent collection includes the official archive of The Serie Project, a non – profit Latino arts organization dedicated to the fine art of serigraphy.

The Serie Project’s annual AIR (Artist in Residence) program invites artists to learn the serigraph printmaking technique and create a limited edition of prints, under the guidance of a Master Printer.

Serigraphy—or screen printing—is a printmaking technique in which an artist transfers an image to woven mesh via a stenciling or photo emulsion technique. The artist then uses a squeegee to push ink through the screen on to a material. Each color requires a separate screen, often resulting in an image made up of multiple single–color layers.

Design is transferred onto transparent film or paper

Screen is coated with a light sensitive emulsion

After being exposed to light, design is burned into screen, creating a stencil

Ink is applied to screen

Squeegee pushed ink through open areas of screen

Ink comes through the screen in the shape of the stenciled design

w h a t a r e c o l o r s e p a r a t i o n s ?Color separations are the result of separating a color image into layers of individual colors. James Huizar’s 2011 Serie XVIII serigraph print, titled Big Boom, consists of nine layers which are each painted separately onto paper from lightest to darkest in color. Below, you can see each of the color separations that make up Big Boom.

How many different colors did the artist use in this image?

Read the text on this print. Does the theme from the text relate to any elements of the image?

Does the print’s meaning change after you read the text or do the text and image have the same tone?

Choose one color from the image. Does it appear more than once? Is there any connection between elements of the same color in this print?

With the color from question #2 in mind, look at the other prints in this exhibition. How do the other artists in the Serie Print Project exhibition use this color in their prints?
