SCANIA CAB RANGE
A Scania cab is designed
primarily for high produc ti vity.
That’s because a fi rst-class
environment promotes better
driving, which will contribute
to the profi tability of your
company. Drivers need a cab
with a pleasing ambience: a
safe, secure environ ment with
a rewarding driving experience.
And they want space and
comfort, either for a short break
or perhaps several over night
stops. A professional, diligent
driver is worth a great deal to
your business. And that same
driver is worthy of a Scania cab.

HIGHEST QUALITY: INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND ALL AROUND
Scania trucks consistently enjoy high residual values. One of several reasons for this cost benefi t is the high quality – and lasting quality – of the cab. It has immense strength, high-quality materials throughout, comprehensive corrosion protection and a superb fi nish.
Strength for safety and longevity.
The distinctive shape and imposing appearance of a Scania cab is built around a tough, rigid steel cage. The structure has been designed to with-stand severe impacts for the protection of the driver and to infl ict as little damage as possible to other vehicles in the event of a collision.
Laboratory test rigs subject fully-built up cabs to more than a truck’s total lifespan of vibra tion and road shocks, to ensure that theo-retical computer calculations are replicated in the toughest of real operating conditions.
The result of such painstaking attention is a cab of genuine all round, all over quality that will withstand years of daily use and the inevit-able occasional abuse.
Strength and durability: designed in, built in.
Built-in strength and protection. Galvanised
steel panels are welded to the cab’s frame in
one of the world’s most advanced computerised
robotic plants, ensuring a precisely assembled
and rigid structure. The completed shell under-
goes a multistage pre-paint treatment, giving a
high-protection coating to all surfaces. Internal
box sections are injected with wax oils to seal
and protect from moisture.
4–5
Vibration test rigs subject cabs to a wide range
of irregular or modulated amplitudes and
frequencies, to discover any areas required for
added strength or resistance to annoying rattles.
By ironing out resonant frequencies, we are able
to give the cab long-term strength as well as a
more pleasing working environment.
HIGHEST QUALITY: INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND ALL AROUND
Protection and prevention for a safer truck.
Safety for occupants of the cab requires a com-prehensive approach to cab design. Minimising injury resulting from a collision is only part of the story.
Driving for safety: alert and relaxed.
A Scania cab is designed to maximise alertness and concentra tion over the whole working day, by providing an ambience calculated to reduce stress and promote wellbeing.
Impact testing for cab strength.
The Scania impact test requires a cab to be subjected to 1 tonne pendulum weights swing-ing against the front A pillar and the rear wall. A 15 tonne dead weight is placed on the roof. The cab doors must remain closed, but it should be possible to open them. This protects the driver and assists fast rescue.
Maximised survival zone.
In the event of a serious collision, the steering wheel, steering column and instrument panel will progressively absorb impact energy. The instrument panel is reinforced to limit thigh and knee injuries. Materials used bend rather than snap, reducing the risk of lesions.
Safety with security.
All trucks and much high-value cargo suffer risk of theft, possibly accompanied by personal risk to the driver. Scania vehicles have a high level of protection with a central locking and immobiliser system that incorporates remote control and auto-checking. There is also the option to fi t a smoke detector and fi re alarm in sleeper cabs.
6–7
All cabs can have safety belt pretensioners and an airbag. The pretensioners react rapidly to hold the
driver securely in the seat, so the driver can regain control and possibly avoid further collisions.
The airbag greatly reduces the risk of head and chest injuries. It will also reduce the risk of losing
momentary consciousness, again allowing the driver to react and control the truck to avoid secondary
collisions.
To protect occupants of cars in a head-on collision, a front underrun bar is fi tted so that the energy
absorbing properties of the car are able to function more effectively.
HIGHEST QUALITY: INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND ALL AROUND
A Scania cab offers panoramic views to the front and sides, providing long range visibility of the road ahead and approaching hazards to the left and right. But a driver also needs as close to all round visibility as possible to be sure that danger is avoided at all times.
A bigger, wider fi eld of vision.
Scania cabs have large, well-placed and adjust-able mirrors to give a good view of following traffi c, as well as both close and long views to the sides of the truck.
If the driver needs even more help, cameras are the solution for seeing close-up danger immediately beside or at the rear.
A Scania truck can be equipped with a front view camera that
overcomes the dangers of no visibility in blind spots immediately
to the front of the cab. When coupling to a trailer or semi-trailer,
a rear view camera will make the task far easier and help avoid
embarrassing, costly or serious mishaps.
Both front and rear cameras are linked to a dedicated screen
in the cab. The images are sharp, clear and unambiguous
– demonstrably superior to reliance on hopeful guesswork.
The legal requirement
(category VI) is that the
driver (left-hand drive
vehicles) must be able to
see every thing in the dark
shaded area.
The light shaded area
shows the complete fi eld
of vision provided by
Scania front view camera.
Automatically-levelling halogen headlights are enclosed within a
lighting unit that includes direction indicators, position lights and
side indicators. A thermoplastic casing insulates the assembly from
moisture and dirt. High-mounted spot lamps above the windscreen
are incorporated in the sun shield. Auxiliary lighting includes fog
and spot lamps in the bumper and optional equipment mounted
above bumper.

Smooth, large-radius curves all around the
cab exterior give outstanding aerodynamics
for better fuel economy.
HIGHEST QUALITY: INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND ALL AROUND
The design of the cab has a benefi cial impact on the cost of operation.
Firstly, by having good aerodynamics that will manage air fl ow all around the cab to promote better fuel economy.
And secondly, by making the tasks of checking functions as easy and as quick as possible, to encourage frequent inspections.
Refi nements that boost economy.
The less fuel you use, the more profi table your business. Wind tunnel testing is used to refi ne every surface, every curve, every item of equip-ment, that could give improved aerodynamic performance.
In good shape for performance and economy.
The cab is slightly narrower at the front com-pared to the rear, resulting in a wedge-shaped profi le that reduces drag.
A key factor for optimised airfl ow is the ability to cope with cross winds. The large radius curves all around the cab help achieve a good solution that not only improves fuel economy but also reduces road spray and cuts down wind noise inside the cab.
Easy for the driver, better for the truck.
Daily checks are important for safety and for ensuring the truck is ready for the journey. Scania makes sure inspections can be carried out quickly and easily by giving fast access to all checking points. Convenience for the driver is evident in many ways, for example with storage options and easy-entry steps.
Optimised for economy and convenience.
The cab’s lower panel opens up to provide a
sturdy platform on which to stand for cleaning
the windscreen, camera and auxiliary lights.
Wide, deep steps give a secure step up into the
cab. Construction vehicles can have additional
steps at the rear of the cab for access to tipping
gear.
The day’s work starts with some quick checks, to
make sure the vehicle is ready for the journey.
The front panel is surprisingly light and easy to
lift up, despite the tough, durable construction.
It’s possible to check all fl uid levels from here,
as well as having easy access to the air fi lter.
Electrical fuses and relays are accessed from
inside the cab, where they are safe and secure
from moisture and dirt.
10–11
G- and R-series sleeper cabs have a large
storage space with lockable exterior access.
This provides a secure out-of-sight place for
bulky equipment, cleaning materials, tools or
personal items.
THE DRIVER’S PERSPECTIVE
style driving environment with all primary controls logically placed close to the driver.
With both hands on the wheel, the driver is within fi nger-tip reach of virtually all controls and switches that are needed while the truck is in motion. Of course, every driver is different physically and has diverse preferences. So there has to be a wide range of adjustability in the driving position. Exactly the same modular design is in every Scania cab – a high standard for all drivers.
The steering column has an extension range of 60 mm and tilt
adjustment of 20°. A lock on the column secures the desired
position. With the lock released, there is simultaneous adjust-
ment in both planes. It is also possible to park the column in
an almost upright position to allow easier movement around
the cab.
One high standard. A multiplicity of adjustments and options.
The ergonomic principles around which the Scania cab interiors are designed are well established. Recent developments have built on a proven formula, resulting in a cockpit
12–13
Controls needed while driving – indicators,
wipers, washers, headlight beams, Scania
Opticruise, Scania Retarder, cruise control
– are incorporated in the steering wheel or
steering column. There’s hardly ever a need to
take hands off the steering wheel. Like the steer-
ing wheel, the gear lever can be folded
out of the way for easier cross-cab movement.
The curved dashboard has air vents, switches for ancillaries and useful
storage spaces for documents, small personal items, cups and bottles.
The instrument panel, with its well-designed instrument cluster and
large displays, provides the driver with vital information without causing
unnecessary distractions.
The curved shape puts all switches well within easy reach of the
driver. The modular design makes it easy to retrofi t additional controls
for bodywork and other equipment.
The dashboard has provision for an onboard PC that can have naviga-
tion, communications and Scania Fleet Management software.
THE DRIVER’S PERSPECTIVE
While driving, remaining comfortable and alert at all times is essential. That’s why all Scania cabs have such good seating, comprehensive heating and ventilation, and effective cab suspension – all contributing to a fi rst-class environment.
Choose your comfort level.
There is a choice of three seats: luxury, medium or basic. All three have a wide range of adjust-ments, with plenty of fore and aft movement, height adjustments and variable suspension damping. The luxury seat also has side support and adjustable lumber support.
Ventilation can include air conditioning and climate control, with various options for direct-ing temperature regulated air around the cab. There are also three different cab suspension systems enabling you to choose an appropriate level of comfort for the type of operation.
Behind the wheel. Comfort all around.
Exclusive to the luxury seat is a double-jointed backrest, to give even more
options for comfort and back support.
The medium seat shares many of the features found on the luxury seats,
including integrated seat belts, air suspension and a wide range of adjustability
for back and forward, up and down, tilt angle and lumbar support.
The basic seat has fi rm support for the back
and thighs, and there is air suspension to give
a good ride. This seat is the ideal choice for
operators seeking to balance high demands
for both comfort and economy.
Options include a space-saving folding
passenger seat that converts to a table.
Cab comfort is greatly enhanced by suspension
systems that absorb vibration and movement
generated in the chassis and from road surfaces.
The 4-point air system has automatic level adjust-
ment to compensate for load variations. The suspen-
sion damping is progressive; small vibrations are
absorbed at a soft setting, which becomes stiffer
as suspension travel increases.
The 4-point mechanical system has fi ve manual
adjustment settings to both front and rear to maintain
comfort and height requirements.
The 2-point system is designed for trucks travelling
short distances or equipped with crew cabs.
14–15
The heating and ventilation systems on all cabs provide
faster demisting and more even temperature distribu-
tion. Automatic climate control is an option.
Airfl ow is adjusted according to sensors for ambient
and cab temperature, solar radiation and vehicle speed.
The ventilation systems can change all the air very
quickly even in the largest cab, ensuring a constant
supply of fresh air to keep the driver comfortable
and alert.

Short journeys, a quick drop, and then on to the
next delivery point, or back to base to reload.
If you don’t need resting space, why pay for
it? But take a closer look at the interior. Scania
quality through and through means that care
taken with interior design means there’s an
impression of spaciousness, adding to the
comfort of good seats and a fi rst-class driving
position.
An adjustable steering wheel offers more than
just optimal driving comfort. When the vehicle
is stopped, the wheel can also be tilted upward
and out of the way for additional space and
freedom of movement.
Whether at rest or on the go, a comfortable
position and unrestricted movement add up to
a more relaxing day’s work.
