MATACHINES TO DANCE DURING

HOLY WEEK! The Matachines are honored to be a part of the Holy Week. Taking place on Holy Thurs-day, they will wear full attire giving praise to the value of the Eucharist, to our Lady of Gua-dalupe, and to our Lord Jesus Christ for offering Himself for our sins. On Good Friday, dur-ing a solemn commemoration, in observance of the crucifixion, we show reverence wearing all black and using incense so our prayers of thanksgiving may be lifted up before God.

Bringing together Native Amer-ican, Spanish, Mexican, and US cultures, the Matachines, offer liturgical dance, simply not a performance, but true commu-nal prayer of praise, adoration, and supplication.

In Memory of

A REFLECTION FOR TEENS LAY DOWN YOUR CLOAKS! In today’s Gospel the people do something interesting and strange. They lay their cloaks on the road for Jesus’ colt to walk across. Most people wouldn’t want a horse walking on their clothes. However, that’s what people did when a king was in town.

This Holy Week your cloak is, your time, your thoughts, your energy, and your prayers. Normally, we are preoccupied with entertainment, technology, friends, and other distractions… lay them down this week.

Let Jesus “walk all over them.”

HOLY WEEK RECAP The week before Easter is a very special week we call Holy Week. During Holy Week we commemorate the Passion of Christ, who died on Good Friday for our sins, and rose on Easter Sunday to give us new life. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday.

On the Monday of Holy Week the Bishop celebrates a Mass at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson, called the Chrism Mass. During this Mass the Bishop blesses the sacred oils of the sick, catechumen and chrism. The oil of the sick is used for the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. The oil of catechumens is used during baptism, and the chrism oil is used during confirmations and ordinations of priests and deacons.. After the oils are blessed they are distributed to the parishes in our Diocese to be used as indicated. Also, the priests of our Diocese rededicate themselves to their vocation. I love this Mass. It brings joy to my heart celebrating Mass as a larger community of believers.

Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, are known as the Triduum. These three days, are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery.

The Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil. Below is a schedule of Holy Week events.

I hope to see during these sacred days with your families and friends.

DO YOU KNOW ANY INACTIVE CATHOLICS? We would like to reach out to inactive Catholics and encourage them to come home to the Eucharist. The problem is that we do not know who they are or how to contact them. It could be your friend, neighbor, or relative.

Please help us out by writing their name and address below. During Lent, someone from the parish will send them a letter inviting them to join us for Easter. They will also be invited to attend a six-week series, beginning the Monday after Easter, to help them come back home to the Church. Thank you for your assistance.

PARISH BEREAVEMENT GROUP Grief is a journey, one that is endured better when shared. God is with us in that journey and we can be the face of God to each other. With this in mind, our parish is presenting a 5-session class for those who have lost a loved one, be it recent or years ago. The class will be held on Tuesdays, beginning April 5 and ending on May 3, from 1- 3 p.m.

We will provide a safe and confidential setting in which information about the process of grief is shared, as well as elements of healing. The group will share experiences, prayer, and rituals. Gloria Brown and Judy Rossman, Stephen Ministers, lead the group. Registration is required and attendance at each session is requested. Call Judy at 825-9611, x104 for more information and registration.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD As has been our tradition almost every year since 1997, we will once again offer the enactment of the Passion of Our Lord on Palm Sunday.

This effort holds very special meaning for us this year. The play is being offered in loving memory of Beryl Shantic, who originally brought this to our parish, and was the Director until about three years ago when illness prevented her participation. Sadly, Beryl passed away last year and so it is with love and gratitude for her hard work and generosity of spirit that the “Passion” is presented this year.

A well-deserved “Thank You” to the following parishioners who have participated over the past years and have once again given of their time and talents in bringing this to our parish.

And may God bless all of our parishioners for your encouragement and support of this wonderful effort.

EASTER MEMORIAL FLOWERS If you would like to remember your loved ones by making a donation towards the Holy Thursday and Easter flowers for the garden of Gethsemane and the church, please complete the form below and return it to Santa Catalina. This year due to the drought in California, many of our Easter flowers will be silks; as lilies are not readily available. The cost associat-ed with silk flowers is higher than live flowers. We will have a limited number of live flow-

ers but your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Cut out and include with your contribution in an envelope marked Easter Flowers and place it in the Sunday Collection Basket or bring/mail it to the parish office. Please only put one name per form and print clearly so that we are able to list your loved ones name in our bulletin after Easter.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis’ official decree announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy. But Francis had already declared that Jesus “has shown the face of God’s mercy” back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke’s account of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awak-

ened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beautiful scene, full of light—the light of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year’s Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus’ own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy.

—Peter Scagnelli
